Just have a feeling, and by process of elimination. None of the rest of the candidates really instills any sense of confidence in me. It seems to me that the recipe for a good head coach is this: if the guy is a new head coach, he has to have proven himself as a good defensive/offensive coordinator under a head coach whose specialty was opposite of his. If the guy has had head coaching experience before, he has to be a proven winner, or at least had a winning season. The best coaches in the league have all followed this basic formula; Bruce Arians, Todd Bowles, Gary Kubiak, etc. The only one that seems to be bucking this trend is Doug Pederson so far, 3 games into his career.

Jim Schwartz and Todd Haley are the popular names being bandied about right now but I have my contention with these two. Both were losing coaches, and while Haley only had 3 seasons in KC, he went crazy toward the end of his tenure and lost the locker room. That's not a good sign. Schwartz's  Detroit teams were undisciplined and basically all had the same exact problems we have now with Gus, Stafford didn't get reeled in until after Schwartz left and is now not a pick machine anymore. Schwartz wouldn't fix anything here and I don't think Haley is cut out to handle the stress that comes with coaching the Jaguars. I would not touch either of the New England coordinators with a 10 foot pole. And anyway I don't think Caldwell and Khan will go after a guy who hasn't had head coaching experience this time around.

Mike Smith is the only guy who will be on the market this year who will have not only plenty of experience as a head coach, but also will be the only one with a winning record as a head coach. Like Kubiak in Houston, Smith had just been in Atlanta too long and it was time to move on. Smith is the only guy who has proven himself to be a competent head coach over an extended period of time and he would field a disciplined team with a good defense. And obviously he was the DC here during the early days of the Del Rio era when the defense was great. And obviously Caldwell is very familiar with Smith from his days in Atlanta. He's also at that sweet spot in age where he's not too old but he's old enough for players to respect him as an OG.

But anyway, yeah, if I had to bet on who will be the head coach of this team next year I would put my money on Mike Smith.

I am fine with anyone. Anyone but Gus. Isn't it sad that it's come to that point? I'm actually being serious though.

We haven't had a good defense here since Mike Smith left. If Mike Smith were the head coach of this team I guarantee with the defensive talent on this team we would not look like a turd every week.

*Looks at Tampa's Defense*

*Slowly rocks self back and forth in fetal position*

And the Falcons had good defenses?
He had a bunch of winning seasons before it went south on him. 5 in a row with two of those season being 13-3. I'd take that

Dave probably gets one more head coach, I highly doubt he hitches his wagon to another defensive coach. It makes more sense to bring an offensive head coach to work with all the young talent here
Dave knows him well too.

No thank you. We need a Todd Haley that can help Bortles and change the culture of this team.
I don't care if the're a 'defensive' or 'offensive' minded coach. We always ping pong back and forth thinking it's going to make some kind of a difference, just get a good coach.

The winning (in large part) was due to that dynamic offense, Matt Ryan (in his prime) in the beast named Julio Jones, playing in a (at the time) weak division.

Eh, 13-3 is hard to do in the NFL regardless. Bad coaches don't luck into 13-3 seasons, much less twice.

Good point, Mike Smith would just seem like an uninspiring hiring, but to be honest,  I could care less who they hire as long we win!

I don't think he's a bad coach, but I'd like a Great coach--and I don't think Mike Smith is great.  We need someone who can come here and get the most out of the talent we have --and I don't think Mike Smith would be able to do that.  With the right talent, unlike Gus, I'm sure Mike Smith could have success in Jacksonville.  I just don't think he'd be a guy who'd be able to win if our starting QB went down.  And THAT is the type of coach we want.  A coach who brings more out of players, and I just don't think Mike Smith does that.

Falcons never had the talent we do on defense right now. Fowler, Ngakoue, Ramsey, and Jack will all be in their second years too and another top 5 pick to add to the defense.

Exactly.

How does that make more sense? You hire a good head coach who can win, doesn't matter if they're offense or defense minded. That part of it to me is so stupid. A head coach is way more than a glorified coordinator, they have to work with the whole team and they have to be able to win. You can bring in a great offensive mind and that doesn't make them a good, winning head coach. Mike Smith has proven to be a winning head coach.

The same Todd Haley that went crazy in KC and thought his office was bugged and lost the locker room? Yea that's the kind of culture change we need here. Haley got so bad that the FO couldn't even wait 3 more games for the season to end to let him go.

Uninspiring?

What do you mean by that? Seems like Gus inspires people and he's a terrible coach. Does Kubiak inspire? Does Belicheck?

I bet Kubiak seemed like an uninspiring hire to Broncos fans. Ironically he was also a coordinator for them.

I think he means unimaginative. You know, like a ho-hum hire. But maybe that's what we need.

Ain't no one like that out there. You have a bunch of noobs or you have guys who are proven losers at head coach. Mike Smith has proven he can win and win a lot. He's the only one on the market next season who has. I will take that over trying to find an imaginary great coach. Great coaches are considered great because they win. Mike Smith proved he could win in Atlanta and I would argue we have more talent than Atlanta did in those 5 seasons he was winning. And Matt Ryan had his best seasons under Mike Smith. His teams went 13-3 repeatedly. I don't see how that's not bringing out the best in players.

Yep this is where I was coming from
