Reese and Fontenot look to be the best candidates to my untrained eye.

Hopefully Reese rolled his eyes during his interview at the mention of Tom Coughlin. Bonus points!

I'm not a huge fan of Reese, but I like Fontenot quite a bit. I'd be really happy to hire him.

"Those who think the Jets killed the future of their franchise by winning on Sunday and giving the Jaguars the lead in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes may want to look at how Super Bowl winners are built. It’s hardly ever by losing enough to earn the first overall pick, and using that pick on a franchise quarterback.

"In fact, of the NFL’s eight current division leaders, none drafted their quarterback first overall. None even drafted their quarterback in the Top 5."

Yes, I still want to draft Trevor Lawrence, and yes, he will help us immensely.  But I think we should also entertain the thought that an even better way to become a great team is to get a great General Manager.  And that makes the choice of GM obviously the most important thing for this franchise to do this offseason.  By far.

No, That's not how this works.

What the article should have pointed out is that of the 8 divisional champions, You have 6 Tried and True Franchise QB's, Ryan Tannehill who just threw for 3800 yards, 33 tds 7 picks and looks like someone taking the step to becoming a Franchise Guy and Alex Smith a quality qb (who oddly enough was drafted #1 overall).

The fact most of them weren't drafted #1 overall speaks to the eccentricities of the QB position and the difficulty evaluating it, not the lack of its importance.  GM's come and go, Coaches Come and go.  You have to have THE GUY!  IF Lawrence is THE GUY then he trumps everything.

It's even simpler than that.

It's mathematical inevitability.

Every draft has roughly 256 draft picks every year.

Every draft has exactly ONE #1 overall pick.

Not every playoff team is going to have the #1 overall pick.

Now of the teams in the playoffs, many of them made QB their first pick in a given draft.

Chiefs picked Mahomes.

Bills picked Allen.

Browns picked Baker Mayfield (#1 overall, in fact).

Packers made Aaron Rodgers their first pick in a draft.

Not only that, that article blatantly ignores history.  There have been numerous great QBs taken first overall.

Terry Bradshaw, John Elway, Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning have won 13 Super Bowls between them.

Bradshaw, Elway and Aikman are already in the hall of fame.  At least one of the Mannings' are a HOF shoe in.

If he has known Urban for years, why is this decision taking so long?

What does Urban have to figure out?

Urban is only commit if the situation is absolutely perfect. If there is any doubt, he isn't going to do it.

Let's hope... Either way it looks like Baalke is the GM, which is a hilariously Jaguars thing to do.  Just like Bradley to Marrone, just at GM now. This team will never get a true clean slate.
You know this is the Jaguars thing to do. Ugh

Why next week? I wonder if he's going to do another interview or two. This makes me hopeful. If it was Baalke, he certainly wouldn't wait until next week, as he is already employed by the team.

Because Meyer is the one making the choice.

And that tells me that there's no way he keeps Baalke..

Or any other current staff members at that.. This sounds like he's going to change the whole culture of this team, and it's exactly what it needed..

I think it's pretty clear Fontenot is who Urban wants most but Fontenot would get to be a real GM in Atlanta and not just Meyer's figurehead here.

If that falls through then they'll go to other options.
Urban mentioned there are multiple "Elite" QB's in this draft. We have the number 1 pick. We are rebuilding a team. If we are offered numerous number 1's, etc. do we trade the number 1? Or is Lawrence a foregone number 1?

Lawrence or bust!

As long as that other option isn't Baalke.

I willing to bet Lawrence is a non-negotiable with Khan.

Pretty sure the GM interviews go like this:

"We have the #1 pick in the draft this year.  What do you plan on doing with it?"

If the person says "Trevor Lawrence" the interview continues.
If the person says anything else or hesitates, Khan pushes a button that opens up a trap door under their seat and drops them into a tank of sharks.  Or if Khan really hates them, he recommends they try interviewing for the Texans job.

Why tell people right now you’re taking Lawrence? The NFL loves drama and if they keep it a secret, they can debate Fields or Lawrence for months.

However it’s Lawrence and it’s not close. Apparently the one name you can’t use when customizing a Jags jersey is Lawrence..... wonder why? Lol
People have tweeted that the Falcons are going to get Fontenot once the Saints are out of the playoffs.

Pretty crazy that out of the rumored names we have to root for Pioli...

Yup, I even tried it myself to see if it'd work. Lawrence is the only name you can't use on a Jags jersey, any other name works. You can also use/create Lawrence jerseys for every other team in the NFL, except the Jags lol. Pretty telling.

Likely because the Jags have already sent a massive pre-order to Nike for blank numbered Lawrence named jerseys.

If you were trying to trade the pick then you would say there is only one Elite QB. That way everyone would have to trade for the #1.

If there are multiple Elite QBs then it devalues the #1 overall.

Almost like hiring a scumbag who wants full control hampered our options.  Weeeeeird.
