Many people have devoted their lives to serving their country (which the flag represents), so the analogy fits; It's disrespectful.

 

I may not find it offensive.  Crocodile Dundee wont find it offensive.  You might not find it offensive.  That doesn't mean everybody else is just like radical Islam.  If they are, then everybody is, since you can't possibly believe that there is no symbol worthy of respect.

I kind of don't, though. If we truly believe that free speech is universal and is to be respected, then we can't put any symbol above that freedom. Don't respect the symbol. Respect the ideals it represents, and exercise the rights the symbol stands for.

Agree with the first part. Second part in bold seems like a contradiction, but that's besides the point anyway.  The Australian dude mocked people for being upset about this.

Anger is a First Amendment right, and it's completely understandable in this situation.

 

I think the second part is better explained like this: the flag stands for the rights and freedoms we, as Americans, believe in and live by, right? I mean, for me it does, and that's the only meaning it carries for me. If someone wants to stomp on the flag, burn it, flush it, tear it up and feed it to rabid wolverines, whatever, I don't much care. The piece of colorful cloth means nothing to me. What's important to me are the ideas, rights and freedoms represented by the flag, and every time someone destroys a flag they're honoring what it stands for, even if they (and many, many others) don't see it.

Wasn't mocking them, just found them some common ground with some of their Muslim friends
