This really does seem like that last game of the season still isn't sitting well with Dave, don't be shocked if we draft a couple of tackles, of course hopefully after we get a Leo or 2

Mingo
Quote:Except, of course, the only way Joeckel would start inside would be through competition. So all of the rest is a moot point.

If he loses the competition at LT, he's going to have to compete for another spot...
I get your point, but the team could simply have him as the swing tackle, concluding, as I have, that he would be ill suited to play guard.

Or out of injury borne desperation, they could move him inside on a temporary basis.

But I think if he loses the competition to Beachum, either he goes to the bench or he goes.  I don't think he moves inside.
Guess I wasn't the idiot everyone made me out to be when I pointed out that Joeckel was not a good player two years ago.

Oh, I agree with you completely. My point was just that there's no way he'd be moved inside arbitrarily - if he ended up playing there it would be on the merit of competition, so couldn't be that disastrous.

Gotcha.  Yes, we agree completely from that perspective.
My understanding is, he won't sign until he comes back from vacation.

So, in two years?
The Browns still have Joe Thomas.
Joeckel may get some practice snaps at center during training camp. If those go well we might seem him try it in a preseason game.

Either way, he will be the swing backup tackle. He could remain in that utility role for a long time here if the price is right and he performs OK.

Joeckel against Dontari Poe...

I cringe at the thought.
No way Joeckel plays Center. There's no way.

GO JAGS!!

I'll bet you Beachum is the starter by the end of the season

After he get's healthy, unless Luke really wakes up, this is no contest.

Beachum is the guy, looks to be a great signing.
Quote:Is he healthy enough to even start if he does beat out Joekel? I know he's not that far removed from the injury.

He won't win the starting gig until he is.
Quote:The top pass rusher in this year's draft had only 8 sacks last year.  That's not a game changing type player, and he's not worth the money the Giants paid him.

The only way Vernon is worth the money they paid him is if he goes double-digits in sacks and has the same kind of impact in every game that JJ Watt has when he's on fire.

Quote:I think moving Joeckel inside would be a disastrous move.

All his career, the talk has been how Joeckel needs to get stronger.

Outside, he will have to worry about speed more than power.

Inside, just about all he will face are big, powerful guys,  Some 330 lb or more guys.

If he is having problems with DEs, he would struggle mightily with more powerful DTs.

His struggles would be at the expense of the entire team.

The running game would suffer.  Bortles would suffer.  The receivers would suffer.

I would only move him inside under extreme emergency.

Keep Joeckel outside if you are going to keep him on the team.

If Joeckel isn't the starting LT, he's the backup tackle.  He's not an interior lineman.  He'd get killed, or worse, get Bortles killed.

Quote:The truth?

The truth is that we aren't done yet. It's March. There is still plenty of time to make trades, draft players and then pick up other teams discarded players.

10 minutes into a movie "Man... Truth is.... this movie sucks."

Don't rain on his little pity party.  It makes him feel validated to be angry about every move this team makes.  The trail of tears coming from Bklyn keeps Manhattan afloat.
The thought of Joeckel playing center is terrifying, and if it's terrifying for me, Bortles must be wetting his pants at the very notion of it.

Joeckel isn't physical enough to hold up at the least physical challenging spot on the line.

Zero chance he succeeds anywhere else.

He  wasn't awful at RT

That's debatable. Also, how many games did he play there?

Will he become less mushy and quit dropping his head and stopping his feet because he changes sides?
