I would expect a big jump in production from Fowler this year with a year of experience now under his belt and an apparent upgrade with Campbell on the line.  This year will tell us a lot about him.

No disrespect to Dante, but I seriously thought he played with a football IQ of a bag of rocks last season. His predictive one move every play combined with his boneheaded penalties will hopefully ignite something in him to begin learning the game. Year 1 there were many rumors as to him not even paying attention in film room and just working on his body not the mental game. He thought in year 2 he could just come out and do what he does and dominate. Hopefully he was humbled a bit and takes getting coached way more seriously. I think a veteran pro bowl presence like Calais will have an immense impact on Fowler. I fully expect Dante to be a productive player if he actually takes time to perfect a couple moves and dedicate time to watching film. The tape on him was exactly the same all year long, and we never saw Dante change his game at all. Teams knew exactly what Dante was going to do. He needs to elevate his game in the mental aspect first and then let the physical part take over.

Yea Fowler and Beasley rookie numbers a almost exactly the same, Fowler had more tackles, tackles for loss and pass deflections, Beasley got an int and 2 ff, sacks are the same 

It's impossible to pass judgment on a player after 1 year on the field.

Really?  Then what is the rule?  You do know that it isn't always illegal...right?

Sure do. You do realize the way he did it is obviously a penalty? Or are you saying it was a iffy call? 

 

Dante was tied for first among all DE's as most penalized DE in the entire league. He was second in entire league counting DT's. Teams average 5.41 defensive offside penalties for an entire year, and the brilliant Dante had 4 of his own. I think with correct coaching and a look in the mirror from Dante to put an effort to correct these things will fix them. I am can say with confidence that I am sure Dante didn't know he was committing a penalty on that play, on a play everyone knows is a penalty which is a huge problem.

And Fowler played fewer snaps too.

Dante's just another reach for need. Hopefully Coughlin stops Caldwell from doing that crap moving forward. A team's need for an elite player at a position doesn't make the guy they take automatically an elite player. Hopefully Caldwell has learned that now.

I didn't say it was an iffy call.  But you're making it sound like some play that everybody down to peewee should know or could even do.  I've seen Ramsey get the same penalty but it wasn't at the same point of the game.

Leaping Penalty
Leaping to block a kick may be illegal under Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1(q) of the NFL rules. Article 1 of Section 3 lists all acts that the NFL considers to be unsportsmanlike conduct, which includes, “Running forward and leaping in an obvious attempt to block a field goal or (extra point) …” Players lined up within 1 yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped are exempt from the leaping penalty. The NCAA has a similarly worded rule that applies to college football, although the college penalty is considered a personal foul.

So, if he times it right, then it could be legal just as long as he's a yard away from the line when it's snapped?

Nah he tried jumping over a lineman a player away from the center in a 3 point stance and used the lineman in front of him as leverage. Was on a 57 yard FG missed by Tucker that resulted in a 42 yard make. Lost that game by 2 pts against Ravens. Even the bobblehead was in disbelief.

That penalty hurt but I do expect Fowler to make a strong leap this year. He needs to.


He has the talent. Last year was effectively his rookie year and our coaching staff was so bad that it isn't really fair to judge almost any player that was developed under that regime until they have time to show what they've got under this competent coaching staff.
