Quote:We've gone out and spent a fortune on the defense, a defense which already ranked 6th in total defense in 2016. We'll likely select a premier running back in the draft to hopefully remove some pressure from the passing game. We'll also shore up the OL in the draft to better protect the QB. Everything about this team is becoming a Rolls Royce, except the QB. I've seen enough to conclude that Bortles is not ' the guy '. You can put lipstick on a pig, dress him up in a tuxedo, but........he's still a pig. We'll have a Rolls Royce with a Yugo engine if we depend on Bortles in 2017.
Get a new QB in here!
But like 25th in points allowed. I know, I know, offense put them in bad spots. But still. PPG is what matters
Romo and Fournette would be great.
What if we are going to get 2015 Blake with less turnovers, a better run game, and a top 10 defense?
You cool with that?

Absolutely. And to be honest, that's the Blake I'm expecting.
Marrone and Hackett know how to play to Blake's strengths, unlike Gus and Greg.

You mean special teams and offense. We've been horrible there for years.
PPG does matter but every part I the team contributes to that.
Quote:If everyone thinks Tony Romo is going to take the Jags to the promised land then why doesn't anyone think he's worth more than a 5th or 6th round pick? Surely a Super Bowl caliber QB would be worth a lot more than a 5th round pick.
Promise land? Promise land? We're talking about promise land? I'm just trying to win a game!
Seriously, how about this...... We sign Romo then trade him to Houston?

Seriously, (some) drugs are bad, mmkay?
The biggest upside to signing Romo would be that the stripes would finally start flagging late hits on the QB in Jacksonville.
The downside is that it would happen once and then Bortles is back for 14 games.

Did Romo even make it through the 2016 preseason? I wouldn't be surprised if he were to preemptively injure himself if the Jaguars were foolish enough to bring him on just so his legacy isn't tarnished any more than it already is.
No, really no team should be trying to get him, if he couldn't be kept up behind one of the best offensive lines in the league he is done already, just some people can't admit it yet.

They won't trade Dallas for him, why would they trade us?

It's his risk of injury that has teams not wanting to trade for him. The thing is, with Bortles still around that risk is minimized.
I'm thinking we should ink Romo to a one-year deal while working out a reasonable extension for Blake. The plan would be for Bortles to be the starter once again in 2018, or this year should Romo get hurt. This gives Bortles a clear developmental goal. He's been given a great taste at what it means to start in the NFL. Now let him work at his craft for a full year developing behind Tony Romo, and then we just might have a QB capable of taking the Jaguars all the way to the big dance.
Look, two years ago we had a glimpse of Blake's potential, but last year he was exposed a bit. Yes I do think passing too much and a subsequent fatigued and injured arm played a role, but it was just as clear that Blake has some mechanical issues to work through. Should he start this year it's possible his stint with his old trainers might do the trick, but that's also a bit of a gamble. Give Blake a year to polish his game before having to "be the guy" once again, and I just know he'll take the league by storm.
Quote:1. Because if you already have a borderline-contender QB or a developing QB who is already starting games, you don't bench him after he won job. It is such a shock to the confidence of that player that they are basically done with that team. Considering that most GM's and coaches have hand-selected their current QB, they are tied to that player and won't risk jumping ship to Romo who is also not a sure bet because of his injury history.
2. You don't give up something you do not need to. Cowboys HAVE to release him by June. There is no way fiscally they can keep him, and for JJ to continue to improve that team. Why on earth would any team give up anything when they know they will not have to come June. Then on top of that, they can get him for cheaper in June because they can offer a more team friendly contract than his current one. Sure that may give him shorter time to learn an offense, but you would expect a QB with his past history to pick up an offense quickly.
1. The shock to Bortles' system and all of our systems came last year. He knows he struggled, and I'm sure he'll readily understand why for one season he's suddenly backing up one of the league's elite quarterbacks.
2. You often see trades for players who you know will otherwise be released. The idea is that you get the player directly while taking over his base salary as opposed to waiting for him to be released wherein you might end up having to fight other teams to see who is going to pay him the most.

That stat, 25th in points allowed, includes pick-6s, punt returns, 10 yard drives, everything, including loads of stuff the defense was in no way responsible for.
The best stat for judging a defense is total yards and yards per play. Because they are purely responsible for that.
While I tend to agree that a year or two for Blake to just work on mechanics while being the back up could do wonders for him, I have reservations on his attitude toward the team and willing to sign an extension in that scenario. I would not be opposed to it if it would work out.
Trade one of our 7ths for Romo. Let Blake fix his issues over the year.
Draft Fournette in 1.
Draft OG in 2.
BAP 3-7.
Make playoffs.

I understand that. I'm not saying the defense was bad, I'm just saying there's still plenty of room for improvement.

1) Get Romo & Fournette
2) ?
3) Profit

Agreed, but I just want to point out, points per game is a team statistic, total yards and yards per play is a defensive statistic. We should judge a defense by defensive statistics.
I think we would draft a QB at 4 rather than sign injury prone Romo.
When it comes to QB I think we have 2 options.
1. Put all trust in Blake as the starter and draft Allen/Thomas/Fournette
2. Blake isn't our future and we take a QB at 4 to sit behind for a year/take over this year and let Blake go in free agency.
I don't know what they will do. Caldwell has put his job on the line with sticking to Bortles. They will ride or die together. Ive read that Tom doesn't really like Blake as a QB/ isn't his type of QB. They could surprise and go QB at 4. I think it would be better than signing Romo who would play a quarter of the season only to have Blake come back. If they all trust Bortles RB/DL would be the pick. I think the front office will surprise everyone with their selection in the draft.
