People forget that Alex Smith looked like a bust at one point.  He was drafted 1st overall by the 49ers and never looked the part.  He worked with Any Reed and the rest is history.  Reed made a team built by defense and running the ball.  It took the pressure off of Smith and he thrived.  One would hope Bortles could benefit from the same scenario.

Blake Bortles record is just horrific when he throws for over 300 yards. (only 1 win)  Tom and Dave just poured a ton of money for the defense.  It makes sense to use the draft to build the offense and almost looks certain to pick a RB high in this draft.  Establish a running game, play solid consistent defense, and take the pressure off of Blake.   I could see him thriving if the situation is right.

That's my hope too but where alex smith doesn't have an elite arm, he wasn't much of a turnover machine.

With Bortles, even as a manager, I think his accuracy is too poor to play at a pro level, even as a backup.

A game manager QB in the NFL still needs to throw accurately with some assemblance of consistency. If he can at least do that (I have my doubts admittedly), then maybe that works, though not ideal.

Its the winning formula. Stop the other team on defence. Control the LOS and TOP by limiting Bortles pass attempts and execute a power running game. Ironically this will make Blake and our WR's more explosive in the passing game.

I agree with this. He has a sloppy arm.
Caldwell said they were hoping to limit him to 20 - 25 pass attempts per game. Even on a conservative offense that seems too low. If they can limit him between 25 - 35 pass attempts per game while playing the ground game perfectly and the defense leading the team. We could have a shot at at least an 8 - 8 record in 2017.

He was third last year in pass attempts with 625. That's ridiculous. That was a lot to put on him last year. That's basically 40 pass attempts per game. He's not Drew Brees, Philip Rivers or Aaron Rodgers.

He's not capable of picking a part a defense like these guys are yet. And even those guys shouldn't be throwing the football that many times per year because it's not getting them any closer to a Superbowl. New Orleans needs a running game. Green Bay needed a running game badly in that Atlanta loss.

I think if they can get the ground game going between whomever that may be. It'll be for the best. Whether it's a new draft pick / Yeldon / Ivory or Ivory / Yeldon / Grant. I think the ideal number we need to see on the ground per game is a minimum of a 4.0 YPC overall and roughly 110.0+ YPG on the ground.

Do you not think passing 40-50 times a game will help improve that considerably?
Game managers don't throw 35 TDs. Ever.

He's a young QB that needs a strong hand on the till and a hard foot on his rear keeping him moving in the right direction.

With the right coach he will likely succeed.

To be an effective game manager you have to make good decisions

Blake, well....

I... I actually agree with you

To be fair, he was significantly better this year. More than half of his INTs were tipped balls and freak plays

Well I've seen Blake throw in the dirt in the first half of games many times. So to answer your question...I doubt it.

That wasn't so hard now was it? :teehee:
Meaning on his 5th or 6th attempt he's already throwing grounders.

Well damn...

Game managers don't make good decisions, they just don't make the horrifically bad ones. That's why they're called game managers. Hand it off a lot, throw underneath garbage, never make a significant throw, hope the defense and run game wins it for you.

It's all about pressure, we've barely ever seen Bortles playing in a game where the team around him was giving him a real chance to win without him having to make it happen.

Its not like hes saying anything profound. Pretty much everyone in the league would like to do what he just said. Its just that typing something out on a keyboard doesnt actually mean it works in real life.

Might as well say "We gotta score more points than the other team before time runs out, thats our best chance at success"
Game Manager = doesn't turn the ball over much, keeps drives alive , usually pretty accurate

Thats not Blakes game

How many near interceptions did he have though? it all balances out
