Quick recap; I can definitely see what people are talking about when they say this is a remake of A New Hope. There are a lot of similarities between the two movies, and most of them were probably intentional. But I don't think it was detrimental to the movie as a whole because contrary to A New Hope, the rest of the movie was very good. I might upset a lot of Star Wars fans here but if you look at Ep.IV from a story and dialogue POV, it's not a very good movie. Parts of it are down right terrible, like the dialogue and some of the characters (common flaws among all George Lucas films). The Force Awakens takes everything good about Ep.IV and ups the quality on the parts that are bad the the point that the similarities become irrelevant to me.
Additionally, I think the fact there are at least two more movies to follow plays into the plot of Ep.VII in that this movie is essentially one big setup to the episodes VIII & IX. So the reason most of the plot resembles Ep.IV is because the goal with this movie is not bring about a whole new plot, but introduce new characters such as Finn, Rey and Kylo Ren as well as establish the current state of play for the universe as a whole with the Resistance, the First Order and (eventually) the Jedi Order.

I absolutely adore this film starting with the characters, the humor, the feel, and the story. This is a great film, one of the best of the year. And it was only a set up film. Some alley oop pass are just as pretty as the slam dunk.
I always thought "why does Finn have Poe's jacket. How are they going to make this one make sense?" And they gave it to us as a necessary plot device. I was satisfied and fulfilled for now.
Kylo Ren is a rockstar. Hate him, but am intrigued and intimidated with his presence and cadence. He is what the force looks like when instability handles it.
Poe is the hero that Han Solo would have been if he actually wanted to be a hero. Charismatic and confident.
Rey aside from being beyond the comprehension of beauty, was no damsel. A women who can fend for herself while being unsure. Definitely a break out of the cliche/stereotypical female hero role.
Finn was the coward turn courageous hero that was to me the most relatable. He's not the "walk away from an explosion" cool hero, but he's the inspired hero. In the face of danger, he steps into a situation to save the one person who looked at him as more than a weapon

It's clear he's nowhere near as powerful as he thinks he is which is probably why he fell to dark side, since it promised him more power more easily than he thinks the light side can offer. It's clear they're setting him up as the redemption character but I hope he doesn't get redeemed, it would be too easy a story line for him.

Yea I'm hoping he doesn't get the redemption but it's disneys show now so I'm kind of expecting it.

Fav movie of the year so far and easily rank it better than any of the prequel movies.
I missed today's game to see The Force Awakens. Think I made a good choice

It will be very hard to get tickets. As the movie has made box office history. Breaking all kinds of records.

I enjoyed the movie. I wish they would kept that planet starkiller base, that could've been awesome weapon for the new few episodes. Taking out something that big made taking out the two other death stars seem less important.
Anyways... That Rey
Anyways... That Rey

Quote:There's a theory that he's actually Darth Plagueis, the Sith Lord that trained Palpatine. It makes sense, assuming they can explain how he survived Palpatine's assassination attempt. Abrams' denial of that possibility means nothing: this is the guy who spent a year insisting that John Harrison was not Khan.
Sith also like to have more than one apprentice, and pit them against one another.
Another reason I feel Luke has loosely planned this all, is that whenever the Jedi get vulnerable - they go into exile and wait for the right moment to return. And in doing so, they protect their loved ones by keeping them distant, even hiding their offspring to keep them out of reach of the dark forces. Since the Sith are into the whole slaughtering of children and all. I think Luke knows that without more youths who have the promise of becoming the new Jedi, there's not enough strength to counter the Sith - and only someone worthy of training could possibly find him.

One thing that the movie "missed" in my opinion is delving into exactly what Ren's emotional issues were and where they stemmed from. Watching Harrison Ford, it's easy to tell that he lost a son to something that he could not understand; Watching Adam Driver? NotSoMuch. You know that he is conflicted, but why? You don't have to tell the whole story but at least address why he is that way. It just seemed significant to me in that the movie discusses that he has issues, "I feel the seduction of the Light", but never really goes into why.

In my interpretation, I found it obvious that he wasn't really a strong force user and wanted to become more powerful. He realized that giving in to his anger (likely at not being skilled as he was part of a strong legacy) would give him more power and Snoke cultivated that. He wants to become as powerful as his grandfather but is nowhere near that, and all his angst stems from this inferiority. If you watch it again, look at the facial expressions of General Hux and other leaders around Kylo. They are all just humoring him because he's the Supreme Leader's latest pet. They don't take him all that seriously.

That makes as much sense as anything else I guess, although a "desire for power" seems a bit of an overused storyline. I guess I just wanted more about what motivated him to walk away from his family.

I really hope we see that in the next episode. I imagine we will get some good dichotomy in the trainings between Rey and Luke and Ren and Snoke.
So much set up in this movie, I'm fully expect Rian Johnson to knock Ep 8 out of the park.

No one has ever seen anyone use the force to stop a shot in mid air much less pull someone's thoughts out of their heads. I think he's going to end up being one of the strongest and darkest of all when it comes to this series.

Before The Force Awakens came out, I said that I thought Episode 8 would be the best Star Wars of all time IF The Force Awakens was good. Now that it's good, I have no doubt that EP8 will be the best movie top to bottom
1. No screen time consuming character set up
-Movie was great, but we did need introductions to Rey, Finn, Kylo, and Poe. EP8 we can just jump right into the story and begin to have some of our questions answered. getting right into the action could make, for me at least, a condensed movie in the Force Awakens feel more fleshed out in EP8.
2. Rian Johnson is a better director than JJ
JJ Abrams is a great director, no doubt about it. But Rian Johnson is the better director and story teller. Not just in Looper, but Brick and The Brothers Bloom, he's a slightly executed of directing. In my opinion
3. We are already invested in the character
-from Kylo Ren to Finn, we finally care about these characters. No Count Dooku or Grievous, but characters we can sink our teeth in. That with the new technology and filmmaking magic of 2015 should mix together to add up to a classic.
7 was great, but definitely a set up film/bridge. The real movie is 8.

As with Luke's exile, it's clear they chose to avoid those backstories so they could be told in the upcoming sequels.

I found it quite easy. Bought my Thursday ticket the week prior, and walked up to the ticket counter on Saturday. Going again tomorrow night with the family.
Better operators are opening more shows to keep up with demand.

Quote:One thing that the movie "missed" in my opinion is delving into exactly what Ren's emotional issues were and where they stemmed from.My interpretation is that Kylo Ren has a great deal of raw talent with the Force--he is a Skywalker, after all--but lacks the patience or determination to develop it, instead wanting to just automatically be the best. When it became clear to him that the Light Side would take a lifetime to master, Snoke showed up tempting him with the quick ascent to power that the Dark Side offers, and that was enough by itself to win him over.
Basically, if Kylo Ren had a ship, it'd be called the Millennial Falcon.

Sigh. I see I'm alone then in thinking this was just not a good movie.

I watched it and while some parts were great some were disappointing as well.
The acting I thought was really bad at times, but the special effects were fantastic.
The plot line wasn't bad, and it had a certain realism to it that all the others lacked (more of an adult theme than in the past with blood smeared on the Storm Trooper to let you know this one is going to be different),
You are not alone rpr52121 I wouldnt go as far as to say it was a bad movie but I felt disappointed as I guess I had expected better...
