Quote:Not buying it.  The Jags  have talent on defense when they're all healthy.  Not that it's perfect, they lack a little speed/depth at linebacker and they need another rush end (outside of Fowler when he gets back).

Indeed.  We do have talent.  It's all over the place.  The problem is that Gus hasn't changed his mentality.  He still thinks in terms of an AYSO league.  He thinks there are "wins" in losses.

That was great 2 years ago.  That was OK last year.  But it's no longer an OK mentality.  This team is ready to break out.  And if Gus is holding back that explosion, he needs to go.

I honestly think he's holding back this team.  I hope he's realized that too.  He just needs to let the Offense do their thing, and he needs to get that D right.  He needs to get aggressive on D.  If he can't do that.  If he can't fix the D, then he's not worth keeping.  He's here because he's a Defensive minded coach.  If he can't correct what happened last Sunday, he's as worthless as a muggle at Hogwarts.  (Harry Potter is on ABC Family, the kids love watching that movie)

I do not disagree with you.

well then how can I argue?  LOL...

We're all Jags...  Jags are pain.

Pain is truth.

I think the Jags will eventually get it turned around.  Our point of debate could be about when that actually happens.  I think it could happen next year, for the rest of this year it's going to be pretty painful although we'll probably have a 2 or 3 win stretch somewhere that'll give some false short-term hope.  I do think Caldwell is doing a reasonable job.  He's not hitting home runs every time but he's made some pretty good moves.  Hurns for example.

Yep. Good call. It's one player's fault.

Yeah, here's where we disagree...

I think we have hit home runs...  We have legit WRs.  We have a legit TE.  And Shoelace is a legit scat back in the manner of Darren Sproles...  Yeldon is also a work-horse.

Our D is actually OK.  They aren't world beaters, but I think last week was a coaching flaw, not a personell flaw...

Look around the AFC South.  We're just as good if not better than the clots, tacks, and tinhorns...  We can still win this division.  It's just a matter of getting really aggressive and believing we are winners.

The problem, to me, is that this team has been told for the last 2 years that we're just rebuilding.  But we're not rebuilding anymore when you look at this division.  We are built right now to freakin' win this division.  We ARE that talented.

Our coach has to realize it and go all out.  There's still time for us to be the Division champs.  It's just a matter of them being coached to believe it.  It's not about "believing in victory".

It's about being winners.

Alualu is bad. I don't know why every post you make has to be about him.

I actually talk about a lot of other things. But...

Whatever

Why do I care? I don't have his jersey.

Doubt
A good offense helps out a mediocre defense.  The top teams in general have top offenses and allow the defense to be let loose when the game gets to the 4th quarter.  The rules favor offense so that is the way to build a team.  You don't need to ignore the defense but you better make sure you can move the ball and score.  We are making progress in that direction.

The defense isn't fine.  They can play better but man we need help on that side of the ball.

You are 13 huh?
Quote:Very few high draft picks, injuries, too much soft zone,  and streaks of just horrible missed tackles have this defense struggling, IMO.

I would normally hesitate to point fingers at coaches when a very young unit are missing a few tackles, but we are beyond that.

There's got to be some better guidance for Telvin and the safeties.  Too many glaring whiffs by those guys lately. Telvin is still learning (and makes his share of good plays too), but Cyp should be over that stuff by now.

The LBs REALLY suffered w/o Poz last week.  Let's hope we can get a semi-healthy #51 out there this week.

I've seen Telvin take a lot of bad angles this year.  His speed helps him recover.  But you are right, POZ is definitely missed.  I do like Skuta and his impact.  With POZ Telvin and Smith we have a good core.  The depth is unbearable.

These guys are paid professionals and they need help with how to tackle? Seriously? That's basic football 101 stuff! How did these guys get on a college team, much less a pro team, if they don't have a handle on something as fundamental as tackling? It boggles the mind...

You're right. There are never any first and second year linebackers and safeties in the NFL that could benefit from pro-level coaching. They come out of college fully adjusted to tackling the top-tier NFL running backs and receivers in the open field.

Of course they've learned fundamentals, but this is a game of inches and coaching on finer details will absolutely make a difference at the pro level.

Besides  - I never said that they need to learn "how" to tackle. They need help in preventing the missed tackles.  Aside from the one-on-one, open field misses - there are tons of missed tackles resulting from players not "staying home" in the scheme and gap misfits. That stuff is clearly coachable and several players aren't executing consistently.
Cyprien.

Tackling is a thing you can master reading a book or by yourself? It doesn't matter the guy your trying to tackle has been playing football all his life and is NFL caliber. Any true professional should have their fundamentals down, I agree. Defense today aren't simple man to man they rely on trust and teamwork to yet bodies to the ball.

Our guys take.bad angles and are trying to do more than they need to on 20% of plays.
Quote:Odrick isn't a pass rusher. He plays the other end.

You do realize that when a quarterback drops back to pass, odrick (and every other defensive lineman) is rushing the passer? The fact that he can't do it well is besides the point.

He is supposed to provide some pass rush. He's not supposed to be the main guy, but he should get some pressure as well as playing the run well.

If we were ok with just a good run stuffer, red bryant would've been perfectly fine.
