This team doesn't fear their coach, he's soft. They need to get a HC in here that'll put the fear of God in them. Caldwell made the mistake as a first-time, young GM who bought into a sales pitch of a high-energy, upbeat coach.
The GM has an eye for talent.... The coach can't get them going and seems to have lost the team. At some point guys are going to look at 8-30 and not take you as a head coach seriously
Quote:Under Dave Caldwell, draft picks in the first 3 rounds, where you expect to find starters:

Offense: LT, QB, WR, WR, RB, G, G

Defense: S, CB, LEO

Conclusion: This regime has focused on adding talent on the offensive side of the ball, and it looks like it may be starting to pay off. The defense simply doesn't have the horses right now. Give it time.

Good point lets wait a decade for that matter... why not we can stand watching HC Gus Bradley win 3 or 4 games each season for ten years....

stop with the excuses other HCs have less talent and get more wins...

Who? Not in defense of Gus at all but I'm curious as to who you think has less talent and more wins. I can think of a couple of teams maybe but what teams are you thinking of?
The Ny/NJ Jets had only 4 wins last year and many wouldn't have expected the new HC Todd Bowles to have the Jets at 4-1 with the talent that they have on the roster.  I mean sure he got Revis (but he may have pushed that FA as HC).

I mean based on Preseason I thought Todd Bowles and the Jets were going to stink but of course I thought the Jaguars were going to be good so what do i Know..

Ummmmmmm...the Jets have a very good defensive roster, sooooooooooo.....?

Where did I say anything about excusing the HC in that OP. The talent on defense sucks because the Jags havent been drafting for it. Period.
The same guys doing mistakes week after week are still on the field.

I want more Ryan Davis, Abry, Sample.

Less Branch, Clemons, Cyp.

The reason the defense stinks is because our scheme is predicated on the front 4 generating pressure. When that doesn't happen, since we run the same defense week in and week out, teams are able to pick apart the zone until the big play potential opens up and they are able to take shots downfield on us. When we blitz, we either get home or leave a hole to exploit. Guess which happens more often. Gus has a defense which relies heavily on the LEO and we don't have a healthy guy on this roster who can play that position.
The defense stinks because we don't have NFL talent on it for the most part. The NFL talent we do have is hurt or coming off injury.

Revis, Cromartie, Skrine, Harris, Leonard Williams, Richardson, Wilkerson...... Their defense is legit. Rex was holding them back. Bills defense has regressed since Rex came in there.

I understand this reasoning, but at the same time, I think it has been proven that the system doesn't work.  If you are dependent on a certain position and your whole defense falls apart if a person is hurt, then it is not a good NFL system.  Players will be hurt on every team, it is up to the coaching staff to prepare for the inevitable and make changes when necessary.  8-30 proves this coaching staff is nowhere near good enough and neither is the system.
Pass rush isn't the only reason why the defense is bad. It's multiple things.

It may not be the only reason, but it is highly likely its the main one.

It's definitely one of our biggest problems. It's the reason teams are killing us on 3rd downs.

Agreed.

I've come to a point I honestly don't expect us to get off the field on 3rd downs anymore, especially 3rd and long and that's just wrong. I feel a bit better about us when the down-and-distance favors running the ball than I do on obvious passing downs.

and Geno got his jaw broke just in time for Fitzy to save their QB situation

We couldn't cover even with a pass rush. Look at the Foster TD and the Hopkins catch and tell me what a pass rush would have done. Boyer had the ball out within 3 seconds.

Well thats not entirely true. Hoyer had all day to throw and you can't cover Hopkins for 6 seconds.
