Some 3-4 teams feel that he isn't a great fit in their defense and more of a 4-3 end. Sources from that AFC playoff team said that Thomas is more of a good left defensive end for a 4-3 team. They think he has good technique, hand use, awareness, and feel while also being a great person off the field. An NFC team picking in the top 20 said they thought Thomas would go in the 11-20 range.


There were a number of interesting comments about Thomas from league sources. One AFC director of college scouting picking in the top 20 had this to say about Thomas: "Late one is right for him. Not worthy of a top 10. Nice player, but not special; undersized defensive end."


One general manager of a team picking in the top 10 said, "Thomas of Stanford does seem a bit rich to go in the top 10, but I think he would go around mid-to-late first ... he is a good football player but may not be quite that 'sexy' to go in the top 10 … time will tell."

We definitely must take everything around this time with a grain of salt but it's interesting nonetheless.

VH3 definitely made an impact. Most receptions and yards allowed in the entire league.

Had a bad start to the season but got much better and made the all rookie team and helped turn that Tampa D around the 2nd half of the season.

So what are we defining as an impact here? Because if it's simply helping to contribute to the team then it is [BLEEP] to say no rookie edge rushers contribute to teams. If we're talking about difference making playmakers, none of them were that other than Ramsey and again that wasn't until towards the end of the season.

So now people are questioning Thomas because he might not make an immediate impact? Good lord. No one knows if any rookie will make an immediate impact. We draft Fournette but the line still sucks and we end up with Gurleys sophomore season. Draft Lattimore and he gets burned a ton because no one throws at Ramsey.


Thomas is an unknown. Just like every single rookie this year.


He has a motor that doesn't quit and makes big time plays. He may be a tweener but that label has been applied to tons and tons of players who end up being pro bowl players.

That's one place talking about NFL sources. Nearly all the main draftnik sites have Thomas as a top 5 player.

Exactly. And guys with his athleticism and technique combo nearly always make impacts. He's not just a hyper athlete but he is also technically sound. Even if he doesn't get 10 sacks as a rookie he will still make a difference on our line and will be the best edge rusher this team has had since Brackens immediately.

You trying to say those guys didn't have good rookie seasons as corners?

I wouldn't call Thomas an edge guy.  I think he is you prototypical DE.  The "edge" guys are a little litter and more like a tweener LB/DE

Exactly. You could make the argument that he isn't "prototypical 4-3 DE size" at 6'5'' with 34+ inch arms but that has been proven time and time again to not matter. If NFL teams are still getting hung up over that stuff instead of just looking at a guy who is a hyper athlete and is technically sound then there is a big problem.

Thomas is that. Again, people see him a certain way because Stanford had him play inside. Look at his measurables and he is exactly like Justin Houston or a bigger Khalil Mack.
