Quote:tbh it's hard to wipe out the entire roster and go anything better than what we have. saw a stat yesterday that says we still have the second youngest team in the league. I'm guessing that by that stat we won't worry about gus or David until at least YR6, since on average it takes about 4 years for a player to develop.

So we shouldn't be playoff worthy until year 5? It takes 4 years to build, and they will be ready by 2017? My God, we've been handcuffed as fans since 2011.

6 years to build a competitive roster? No. Absolutely not. No team is so devoid of talent that it takes them 6 years to get competitive. Good coaches can turn a terrible team around in 2. Gus HAS to show competitiveness this year.
I see them needing one more year to complete Bradley's vision. When Gus said this team is built, he was talking about the foundation as the pieces should be in place. The offense, for starters, is very young and can use one more year of jelling and experience building. Defense, however, is Gus' specialty, but to make everything click like it does in Seattle, he needs his LEO and OTTO in place.

Now we're hoping Skuta will fit the bill for the OTTO role, but he's clearly a work in progress at the position. Last year we tried LaRoy Reynolds at the spot, but Gus is not longer even listing him there on the depth chart. Instead it appears he wants to get a good look at UDFA Armbrister whenever Skuta is not manning the position.

At LEO, we know the role is set to be filled by Dante Fowler, Jr, but that's a year off from becoming a reality. This year we're clearly struggling to fill the void.

Without a dominant LEO and OTTO in place, we're just not there yet.

Maybe this OTTO position just isn't a very feasible position to acquire.

This is year 3 ... they better have their guy there now.  Skuta was saying during an interview that the position is much different than anything he's ever done, so I hope they knew what they were doing signing him.

Quote:It's nice you didn't answer my question, but you decide to act like a moron just because we have different ideas of how this team should be heading. You believe in mediocrity and that hopefully one day Gus will bring it all together. Then when he's fired, you'll swear it's what you knew the whole time. Get over yourself. When should the Jags be in the playoffs? It won't be next year by your logic, but getting 8-8 does.

What is there to answer?  I can't judge the season until it plays out.  You want to put black and white proclamations no matter the circumstances this season.  I choose to take everything into account.  Your view is very narrow minded.

We've been handcuffed as fans since Brunell went downhill.

Now, we've got our QB.

The team around him is getting better, too.

If you can't tell the direction the team is taking, you need a new compass.  At no time prior to now during our "rebuilding" period (since 1999, basically) have we had a QB with the talent and progression Blake is making.

This. If we are taking another step this year and look to be building something great than why would we blow it all up again and start over?
Chuck Noll won 12 games in his first 3 years as the Steelers head coach. He won 31 in his next 3 years. I'm not saying Gus is the second coming of Chuck Noll, but he does seem to have a plan that seems to be working. This season will be very revealing. If the team continues to linger in the bottom 5 in most performance measurements and the team registers less than 6 wins, then it will be hard to argue that there has been improvement.

It would be nice to replicate the Steelers' 1974 Draft........Lynn Swann in round 1; Jack Lambert in round 2; John Stallworth in round 4 and Mike Webster in round 5. All future Hall of Famers. They also picked up Donnie Shell in free agency that year. Those picks powered the Steelers to Super Bowl wins in 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979.

This is what you and JT Money fail to realize. I believe Caldwell has done his job, and he has all the right pieces in place to get to .500 or beyond. You think you always need more time, 1 more season will do it. Wrong, it's time to put up or take a hike. If this were a business, you two would be out of business.

Once again, what other teams fans think it's ok to not make the playoffs, besides us? I think not making it is fine, just don't have another losing season. Pretty pathetic thinking about it.

I do pretty good.  From what I gather, JT does pretty good (probably better.)  I'm respected in my industry and in the organizations I'm involved in outside work and family.

What is it exactly, that you do?

Chirp from the peanut gallery?  Student with little or no real world experience?

You certainly lack a sense of perspective.

That's fine for a fan.  But a disaster in real life.

Thats great, good way to put me in my place, calling me an unsuccessful student with a brain full of mush. The truth is I am far from your description you believe me to be.

You are an excellent moderator, and I'll never get to achieve that kind of success while posting here. Now, let's get back to football because I don't need to try and intimidate others about my achievements in life, nor do I care to know.

No, they aren't Wolf. They were worse than us last year and have rookie crab legs as their starting QB.

Wow, aren't you a powerful internet moderator! Quick, flex for us and belittle the regular active members. Its no wonder that this message board isn't dead because of you and the rest of the big headed mods(except Jags02). Trying to prove you're better at life than someone on a forum. Pathetic. Get over yourself.

Chuck Noll didn't have the advantage of FA to build a team. It was a much slower process in those days.

We added 7 veteran starters through FA alone this year. Caldwell's first draft class is entering their third season which is considered the begining of a player's prime years.

Getting only three more wins this season would not be percieved as progress, it would be a sign of serious problems. It would mean multiple players not living up to expectations.

People are saying that these moderate gains such as getting to 6 wins will be viewed as improvement and would be considered acceptable progress. I promise you, if you see this team getting only 6 wins, the view won't be considered positive. 6 wins means a lots of big mistakes by players and coaches that shouldn't be making these mistakes. 6 wins means big wiffs in FA and in the draft.

6 wins will not look like a sign that the team is getting better. 6 wins is ugly. For a team that has acquired this much talent, 6 wins would leave you feeling deflated.

I don't think people truly understand what 6 wins will actually look like.
Actually 02 has become rather extra (absolute in his takes) lately, in my view. He was a breath of fresh air in his earlier days. Still appreciate his input though.

CSO, I couldn't express how much I agree with your stance on this unfathomably forgiving fanbase. This year, let's aspire to 6-10 as the standard, next year we break even. The level of ill confidence and fear to dream big is bewildering. You are FANS, you do not play. Wish for 19-0 if you want, and be considered unrealistic, and dumb like some of us.
Predator, thank you sir.

Couldn't agree more. +1
