Less than six it will definitely be a high possibility, 6 or 7 he's safe, 9 i'd bet he gets an extension.

Quote:Actually 02 has become rather extra (absolute in his takes) lately, in my view. He was a breath of fresh air in his earlier days. Still appreciate his input though.

CSO, I couldn't express how much I agree with your stance on this unfathomably forgiving fanbase. This year, let's aspire to 6-10 as the standard, next year we break even. The level of ill confidence and fear to dream big is bewildering. You are FANS, you do not play. Wish for 19-0 if you want, and be considered unrealistic, and dumb like some of us.

I think I've been misconstrued a bit. I'm predicting a record of 8-8 for the team as I feel the team should aspire to break even so they're no longer looked at as a team with a losing record. I'm also sure things will look ugly in Duval should they only go 6-10 and that doing so would put Gus on the heat seat for 2016. That said, Khan will surely understand that six wins represents an improving team, and is not about to blow up the team again should they only reach six wins. It's been many years since the team has even won that many. Getting rid of Gus after a six win season would mean starting over again with several more years of losing. Why would anyone want to go there? At five wins they may simply have to start over to get their arrow pointed up again, but six is enough to say progress is being made and to keep striving for more. We want more!

I know you're also talking about me saying I'd be happy if they start 1-3. In my mind that's just being a realist looking at the schedule, and what I fear the most is an 0-4 start. The Patriots and Colts have long had the Jaguars number and appear to be as strong as ever, the Panthers won their division last year with most league experts ranking their defense in the top five, and the Dolphins have moved into the ranks of being a legitimate contender. I hate to sound like a negative Nancy, but I just feel fans should temper their expectations out of the gate. With any luck, playing these formidable teams will make the Jaguars all that much better for the remaining twelve games.

Quote:This. If we are taking another step this year and look to be building something great than why would we blow it all up again and start over?

Exactly.

When I say "six wins and Gus is safe," this is what I mean. I'm not saying we shouldn't aspire for more.

Quote:This is what you and JT Money fail to realize. I believe Caldwell has done his job, and he has all the right pieces in place to get to .500 or beyond. You think you always need more time, 1 more season will do it. Wrong, it's time to put up or take a hike. If this were a business, you two would be out of business.

Once again, what other teams fans think it's ok to not make the playoffs, besides us? I think not making it is fine, just don't have another losing season. Pretty pathetic thinking about it.

Again, Gus' defense is predicated on having a LEO and OTTO. Maybe their OTTO is on the roster. Their LEO is on the roster, but he's on IR and not playing. In other words, they don't have their LEO meaning one the most important pieces is not yet in place.

Quote:Maybe this OTTO position just isn't a very feasible position to acquire.

This is year 3 ... they better have their guy there now.  Skuta was saying during an interview that the position is much different than anything he's ever done, so I hope they knew what they were doing signing him.

The position is clearly pushing him to the max, however, I'm still relatively confident he can get it done. Looking at his resume he appears to have all the required skills and athletic ability. I sense he's still at the point where he's thinking instead of reacting, but at some point the game is sure to slow down for him and when it does we should see his game transcend. Keep your fingers crossed.

To critize Head Coach Gus Bradley and feed into the hatred that a few have due to the lack of wins in his tenure in Jacksonville is to say that you have lost all faith in his ability to turn this team around which I am not willing to do.

I do think that being a DC minded coach, and having the team's identitiy as stopping the run first most with his 46 defense & Cover 3 Zone Blitz packages it is sad that last season the team was the 6th worst at stopping the run (though they did have tons of injuries & the offense was one of the worst in the NFL which didn't help things out either).

2015

best possible outcome: steal a wildcard and win a playoff game or two

expected outcome: reach a non-losing 8-8 record with some mid-season playoff speculation

minimum acceptable: reach a 6-10 record with a strong finish and minimum blowout losses

2016

best possible outcome: appear in AFC Championship for third time

expected outcome: claim wildcard and win a couple playoff games

minimum acceptable; a non-losing 8-8 record with offseason SB speculation

2017

best possible outcome: winning the SB

expected outcome: Playing well but losing a close game in AFC Championship

minimum acceptable: winning the AFC S or claming a wildcard

By "minimum acceptable," I simply mean reaching a point where we're not ready to blow it up and start over.

That is a very good assessment of what to expect in the near future in regards to most fans expected outcome & what we think is the minimum acceptable performance that the owner will tolerate, BUT

I guess I am drinking the teal koolaid (or feeling really optimistic) because I think the best possible outcome could always be winning the SuperBowl each season as that is the goal of all teams.

I mean stranger things have occured, and what if a majority of the opponets the Jaguars play this season have bad injuries to key players allowing the Jags an edge?  Or what if Blake Bortles catches on fire to Lewis and when Thomas returns they make for a dynamic duo that teams are hard pressed to contain with Hurns posing as a valid Deep threat?

If Gus gets 6 wins or more (bonus).. he's safe, if he gets 5 or less, im terrified for him.

I personally hope he stays, I really think the guy is awesome.... I want nothing more than to see him succeed and take Bortles with him.

If we gets 6 wins and avoid blowout losses and see the true development over the course of the season from Blake, ill be more than content and happy.... I always want to see more but that be minimum acceptable/reality for me.

Quote:Less than six it will definitely be a high possibility, 6 or 7 he's safe, 9 i'd bet he gets an extension.

If the Jags get to 9 wins, Gus won't be the only one getting an extension.
Quote:For anyone talking about a 9-7 record, here's a very good question from the radio recently: when was the last time a team won as many games in one season as they did in the previous three years combined? Because that's what you're asking for. And I think that also showed what a ridiculous expectation 8-8 is as a minimum acceptable record.

I disagree with the 8-8 part of this. I understand we are in the 3rd year of a total rebuild of an awful roster but Caldwell has provided bradley with a lot more talent than he ever had before.

Last year we left a lot of points on the field with bortles early struggles and some mistakes by both the coaching staff and young players and had we had a little more experience its perfectly conceivable to think the eagles ravens steelers titans were all winnable

With the fa acquisitions and the improvement of bortles not only are we more experienced but also more talented than we have ever been before

Last year the dolphins and niners went 8-8 the Brown's went 7-9. With the talent on this team I feel we are at a similar level to where those teams were last year... Dolphins obviously improved with suh, the niners went backwards and the browns stayed much the same.

For Bradley to stay safe we need to see significant improvement in line with the talent level of this team and that for me has to be around 8-8.

I don't feel 6-10 can be considered an acceptable result of three years of effort
Quote:I said 2 years of trash is fine.  Gene Smith left us in really bad shape.  However, we should atleast after 3 years of rebuild be at a minimum 8-8.  We don't have Gabbert, we have Bortles.  We don't have Mike Thomas, we have Hurns/AR15.  We have a competent team now, I'm done with excuses now.  It's time to win.  Bortles is going to be REALLY good, and if Gus can't muster up some wins this year, he's not the guy.  He's wasting our time.
I really like your optimism about Bortles being 'really good'. I really hope you're correct; however, I'm really wondering what are you basing this optimism about Bortles on? His statistics? He was statistically the worst quarterback last season, really, so it can't be that. Perhaps you're basing your optimism on what we've seen from him in preseason games. There are two problems with this really; (1) we saw him look impressive at times last season during the preseason, and we all saw how grand that season ended, and (2) really... take a deep breath and repeat to yourself...

'it's just the p r e s e a s o n'! Gabbert looked really impressive at times in the preseason.

Here's hoping that we can, at the very least, make it to 6-10, and that we will do much better than that! Here's hoping that Bortles is much better than his current stats indicate. Here's hoping that our o-line actually is better which will help Bortles look better. Here's hoping that our receivers don't develop a bad case of the drops like we witnessed happening during the preseason. Here's hoping that we don't witness more ridiculously 'bad angles' being taken by our defenders. Here's hoping that we're a better team this season than we were last season... and not just an older one.

Here's hoping that we just win baby!

All validity goes out the window whenever there is any mention of any comparison whatsoever between Gabbert and Bortles.

here's hoping I won't write another crazy post like this...
8-8 or above for me.

It's time. I dont care about a close loss. It's still a loss.

Just like i wouldnt hold it against the Jags if they won by three or by one.

Win some damn games. For once.

Exactly!
Who would be happy if we lost to the bucs by pne pt?
Point: positives

1. we have one of the 'softer' schedules this season than we've had in a while.

2. we are more experienced.

3. we have upgraded our o-line (at least the right side of it anyway...)

4. Bortles has worked hard this off season to improve his throwing mechanics which should translate to better performance.

5. much of the detritus that was polluting our roster last season is no longer wearing a jaguars uniform; not all, but much of it.

6. we've got (ostensibly) better assistant coaches than we had last season... we hope.

Point: negatives

1. we have injuries to key players at key positions (Fowler, Marks, Thomas)

2. Poz isn't getting any faster or stronger

3. it was only the preseason, but we saw virtually no pressure put on any quarterback, certainly not against any starters.

4. we're still seeing inconsistent play from Joeckel, at times actually getting knocked on his tail. Not good news coming from the blind side.

5. our secondary is questionable... actually, so is our d-line now too.

6. 'sweeping' anyone this season is not an automatic 'gimme'.
Quote:Section 105, this viewpoint irks me to no end: as long as we stay competitive and not get blown out in the games, I'm okay with 6.

Sorry mate, it's about Ws. Would you be okay with 1-15, with all losses under 3 pt margin? Is that progress?

It's not HOW you lost in the big league, it's that you lost. 10 CLOSE loses is more embarrassing and shows incompetence which could warrant being ridiculed, in my view.

I don't recall saying I was "o.k" with 6 wins. I was responding to posters who suggested that we should tear everything down and start over if we had 6 wins. Big difference. Of course I'd be extremely disappointed with 6 wins, but I would give Gus another year if we had 6 wins, were competitive in the other 10 games and showed continued improvement in the 3 phases of the game. Throwing out coaches every 3 or 4 years? How's that been working?
