Quote:Already looks better than the current show imo.
I stick by this, I thought the premier was good, not great but good. The season preview looked outstanding though.

Definitely a different pace but I like it. Fear seems To be giving a pretty realistic view of how most would react during the start of an apocalypse.

I like the cast a lot. Just like TWD, they do a good job finding capable actors. I thought the show was super creepy! I guess because everyone is still ignorant and not scared of walking into a disgusting drug den and not watching their backs.

Pretty disappointed.
The writing is lacking (both dialogue and plot,) and doesn't hold up to the WD standard.
Cast isn't particularly strong, even with an exception or two. The mom and junkie are the only worth writing home about.
So far, it's been a bit like the Coy and Vance version of the Dukes. Familiar territory, but disappointing.

I thought it was a great premiere. Good intro to the characters and the overall premise and direction of the show.
"Fear The Walking Dead" shattering records. AMC is outstanding. They broke their own record with "Better Call Saul" (another phenomenal show!)

Popularity does not equate to quality, with most of the fanbase being the already existing TWD core.
I was just thinking about Saul and how I can't wait until it starts back.

I agree, however I think it take a long time to feel invested in the characters and care if they get bitten in the neck or not. We've grown to love those dirty savages on TWD over the course of 5 years. The first season to me was MEH, but the second season reeled me in.

Fully agree. By the casting and location, they are obviously attempting to reach out beyond their current viewer base.
Seems to me they are struggling a bit with the backstory. The introductions were a bit forced and seemed rushed/not well thought out. That's understandable, given the original series had the benefit of the story already being written, and for the most part the storyboard already drawn up. So well so, that many images were duplicated on camera straight from the source material. This series didn't have that benefit, and it was indicative in the final product.
Now that we are past many of those introductions, perhaps things will level out and they can find their footing. Like a plane landing/taking off it isn't always smooth until cruising altitude. As disappointed as I was, I have faith it will get much better as the series develops. Once the alliances begin and survival mode hits full throttle the story and it's characters will really have room to shine.

It was just ok. I never really put much stock in Pilots as they are meant to introduce characters and story, which tends to drag and move slowly.
However, I was hoping we could see the outbreak through several parties. I would like to see the government angle and how they handled the situation, the CDC and their attempts to head the virus off, how the Jags thumped the Colts in their house with shots of Irsay devouring his suite guests, etc.
My hopes were we would get to see this through several eyes and life situations but it looks like we'll be following this family and whomever they run into along the way. A little disappointing since TWD already gave us this.

This genuinely made me laugh out loud.

I think a government/CDC/whomever POV would be very interesting.
I think the family dynamic with the two broken family units and the antagonistic attitudes and such could make for interesting story. I guess we'll see. And I love how the one guy who we see have the first encounter with a walker is a druggie who no one believes. I think if they'd been able to play that out a little more without the masses getting PO'd would have been brilliant.

For everything they've impressed me with, they've let me down at the next turn.
I love the drug addict angle. It drives the story well. However, while I understand a family being protective of as son... it falls flat with me that they feel competent/capable/bold enough to conduct their own little CSI investigation of the drug den. Quite a stretch. Broke my personal threshold for "suspension of disbelief," as I didn't believe they would actually do that on their own, nor would many if any parents I know.
I also thought the mom's "got my flu shot" line was nice, but they could have gone deeper with that to make a stronger impact. One that could be developed further into the coming hysteria over what could be causing the upcoming outbreak. Rather than a glib one liner, they could have had a bigger scene where the nurse/doc was discussing the current strain they were vaccinating against, and how they are confident it will be more effective than those years past and why, etc, etc...
I was also suspect of how quickly the couple was to accept having to "murder" the "walker." The pace of their escalation seemed rushed, and left me feel they were behaving more like outlaws than heroes. I got the feeling their morality/drive was more about sheltering/enabling the son than doing what's right. I would think that in that situation (in the universe where no one knows what's going on yet,) they would still be more interested in getting help for the "walker" than destroying it.

Goodness Ebert!

My only beef with first episode was rather similiar to yours. When the kid was running over the walker in the truck, everyone just kind of accepted it. Seemed odd. Also, if he was my kid, I wouldn't be as nice and accepting as the mom is. That's all. Other than that, I liked it pretty well and look forward to the next few episodes.
