  In defense of the Coaches.
Posted by: OG-JAGFAN - 10-02-2024, 10:51 PM - No Replies

My short breakdown:  I am not going to pretend I am some kind of film clip by clip expert. I am a guy who has watched this game for over 30 years and I rewatch games and study plays.

Have the coaches been perfect?:  Absolutely not! Doug has done a couple of straight out Angry STUPID  Angry   decisions this season.   I still get pissed thinking about that 4th down call in our own field territory against Miami.  I also hate the fact that we didn't run down the clock last week on our last possession.  The right call would be to run the ball 3 straight times and having the play clock drop to 0 but no they threw a couple of incomplete passes and burned almost 0 clock.  Also the team comes out looking flat and uninspired. The coaches have been far from perfect and I can't defend a strong case for them getting fired.

Why the coaches deserves some slack: Lets not forget that Doug has a Superbowl ring and has brought the first  back to back winning seasons here in recent memory.  There are things the coaches just cannot control

1. The QB has regressed to a pathetic state. There appears to be no easy throws combined with the fact he has pure accuracy issues right now.  The coaches get blamed but they dialed up a great gameplan but the QB missed 2-3 Td's. The QB is not elevating anyone and playing like a bum. Sugar coat it and make excuses all you want but it is what it is.  The coaches can't throw the ball

2. The offensive line is overpaid while underplayed: Cam, Schreff, and Harrison have been god awful. I doubt they make 2nd string on the better teams in the league. The real bummer is they had a good game last week but the QB fell off the map. '

3. No pass rush: Hines-Allen (been ok but not good this year) and Walker (disappeared after Miami and still have 0 technique): The coaches are counting on their guys to win.  The opposing QB's have been way too comfortable in the pocket this year. They have a High Priced Defense end on one side and they have the first overall pick on the other.  These guys should be killing Opposing QB's.  Too often you see these guys getting stood up with no pressure on the QB.  Walker especially is a bad pass rusher. He just runs into the Tackle and it's like glue he can't get the tackle off of him.  Baalke really screwed us with no picking Hutch combined with the QB contract.  The coaches are rushing 4 and expecting their pass rush to get through. The players aren't making the plays. Allen has 1 sack and Walker had 2 with one being a kinda accident both occurring in week 1.
4. Outside of Brown, there is nobody playing well in the secondary.  Campbell is hurt yet again. I thought Cisco would break out but he sucks and lets not even talk about Antonio Johnson who I nicked named Burnt Toast.

The bottom line:  We are stuck with Lawrence for a few years with that contract.  The team needs to build a wall of a line around him and having him throwing through tires all offseason. It is clear as day the team is just void of talent. Baalke has had a couple of questionable drafts that are looking worse by the game. Baalke is the blame for this one and the coaches are put in a bad spot. Vince Lombardi, Steve Walsh, Don Shula, Mike Shanahan, John Madden, name any great coach (outside of Tomlin that somehow keeps winning), have all had bad and sometime horrific seasons. It wasn't like those guys forgot how to coach  those bad seasons.  They were limited by the TALENT they had.  You can't make fine wine out of raisins. Baalke is the problem and it could be the case the coaches just do not have the tools to do their job.

Just remember: We all knew the offensive line was a major problem going into the off-season. Baalke signed one guy and just forgot about it. In the draft he wasted picks on luxury players who needed time to develop.

The 11th Annual TWITAFCS Week 5 Thread
Posted by: Mikey - 10-02-2024, 11:11 AM - Replies (25)

The big bad TWITAFCS spreadsheet

Happy Wednesday, everyone.

So last week we saw a bunch of variance in the picks, and as a result we're starting to see a few separating from the masses. Jags fans lamented the inevitable gut-wrenching defeat that has become the norm, the clots and tacks did their part to stash Duval in the AFCS. Houston got a dub, but really did not look like a powerhouse along the way. For now, they sit alone at the top...does anyone have enough fight to compete for the crown?

Not a lot to pick from this week...make 'em count!

BUF @ HOU: The ratbirds put the beatdown on the Bills in their second straight primetime show, what a difference a week makes. The tinhorns nearly gave the Jags their first win of the season with sloppy play and crippling penalties. If Houston wants to be considered among the AFC elite, they need to win this one in convincing fashion. Will the Bills bounce back from Sunday's whupping?

IND @ JAX: Indy is a walking infirmary, Richardson continues to subject himself to abuse. Flacco survived in relief, will he be able to continue the magic? Jacksonville is facing heat from every direction about coaching, expectations, and execution. They've kept most of the games close, is this finally the week that they look like the team everyone thought they would be?

For me, I'll take Buffalo and Jax. Unless the tinhorns can clean up their penalty problem, Buffalo should win a thriller. Duval is due, and I think the players are ready to show it's not them that is the problem.

Good luck, pickers!

I mean, given his combative and odd press conference responses, and him finally throwing the players under the bus this past week…this tracks.

Hope it’s overblown because this team has to rally starting this weekend if there’s any hope for the season

  Players to build around
Posted by: jaglou53 - 10-01-2024, 02:14 PM - Replies (83)

This season has become our fans' worst nightmare. Three of the 4 losses were winnable which is almost more deflating than the loss to the Bills. Trevor Lawrence appears to have lost any confidence in his ability to carry this team. That being said, unless the Jaguars win their next 3 games (very possible due to poor opponents), it would be difficult to imagine ending the season with a record of better than 6-11. The talent level of this team has been debated. With that in mind, which players on the current roster should either be considered as definite building blocks or have the potential to be that if they show enough potential for the rest of this season? This is my list:

Definite building blocks:

Offense:

Trevor Lawrence: The team is locked into his contract and he can still become a top 10 q.b. with a better supporting cast and if he regains his confidence.

BTJ: One of the few bright spots this season.

Anton Harrison: He must do better, but could become a good left tackle.

Ezra Cleveland: Has been disappointing, but has a 3 year deal and can be at least average when healthy.

Mitch Morse: Hopefully the team will get at least 2 more good years out of him.

Brenton Strange: Not great, but worth keeping as a 2nd tight end.

Evan Engram: Like Morse, hopefully the team can get 2 more good years out of him.

Tank Bigsby: Looks the part as future number 1 back.

Possible building blocks:

Parker Washington: Kirk may need to be let go due to underperforming for his salary.

Cooper Hodges: Give him playing time to determine his future with this team.

Undecided: Etienne and Kirk due to not out-performing their less expensive options ( Bigsby and Washington ).

Defense: In the interest of brevity, the only players who are definites are Hines-Allen, Trevon Walker, Maason Smith, Campbell and likely Jefferson. Cisco has been a big disappointment and hasn't earned a new deal. Foye will be a tough decision due to his big contract and the possible emergence of Ventrell Miller. Lloyd and Muma will be on next year's roster, but have been disappointing as has Antonio Johnson. Armstead has also been a disappointment.

By my math, that makes 11 position players who should make up the nucleus with the possibility of another 5 or 6 depending on how they perform for the remainder of 2024. Is that enough for our desperate fans to have some optimism for the future? Obviously, that will be primarily dependent on Trevor Lawrence. Secondarily, a new G.M. is needed to help fill the voids on the offensive line, pass rush and secondary. As far as the coaching staff, their futures are uncertain at this point. If Pederson doesn't turn things around, he and several assistants will need to be fired.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this.

My apologies to Buster Brown who deserved to be on this list. Also neglected was Darnell Savage. De'Antry Prince and Lacy are also possibilities on defense as is Walker Little if he produces as a starter the 2nd half of the season.

Unfortunately, I became distracted due to events in the Middle East and needed to edit my list.

Smile We’re going to smash the Colts
Posted by: SuperJville - 10-01-2024, 10:55 AM - Replies (18)

Look, despite the struggles… this is where the law of averages will kick in.

Trevor will not miss the double move to BTJ on Sunday.  He will not overthrow Kirk this time around.

Defense will get a big turnover.  The Colts struggle playing in Duval.  I think this has the makings of a nice 34-14 demolition of the colts.

Rejoice!

The all-time hits leader with 4,256, but will he ever be allowed into the Hall of Fame?  If it was up to me, I'd say yes, because his gambling never had potential to affect his play.

We have to figure this out. Can somebody post a gif/meme or whatever it is, about 3 or 4 of his attempts to block a blitzing defender while in the shotgun.

This boy ain’t even tryin’

What’s crazy is the oline is doing their job on these plays and Etienne is selling.

Nagy addresses it here a bit (he's the senior bowl director) and many others are saying this class will have limited elite players at the top and more depth developmental guys than usual due to development being slowed by Covid lockouts.

Something interesting to keep an eye on.
