Rewind - A Moment in Jaguars History
Posted by: JagFanatic24 - 03-13-2024, 08:24 PM - Replies (41)

It was 1997 and the Jaguars just came off a magical playoff run in just their 2nd season of existence.

Preseason game against the New York Giants, and defensive lineman Jesse Armstead hits Mark Brunell low and causes Brunell to leave the game with a knee injury. We later found out that he would miss the start of the regular season, which would move Rob Johnson in as the starting QB.

Week 1, the Jaguars face the Baltimore Ravens and Rob Johnson had a game for the ages. Still the highest completion percentage for a single-game and the highest passer rating for a single-game, for a QB that started the game. Johnson finished the game with 325 total yards and 3 total TDs with a completion percentage of 83.33% and a passer rating of 145.5

Most importantly he battled a high ankle sprain during the game and Johnson was carted off the field at one point. He came back into the game, down 27-21, with his ankle heavily taped up and was able to throw the final TD pass which helped the Jaguars win the game 28-27.

The butterfly effect of Armstead hitting Brunell and causing a knee injury, led to Johnson having the best game of his Jaguars career and his only start in Jaguars History in week 1 of the 1997 season, which then led the the Buffalo Bills trading their #9 overall pick in the 1998 draft for Rob Johnson, which then led the Jaguars to pick future hall of famer Fred Taylor, who finished his NFL career with 14,079 total yards, and he became a Jaguars Legend.

I remember watching that preseason game against the Giants and I would have never guessed Brunell’s injury would have turned out like it did.

It ended up being a huge moment in Jaguars History, 27 years ago…

The Offensive Line: This should get both Doug and Baalke fired if it does not work
Posted by: OG-JAGFAN - 03-10-2024, 04:00 PM - Replies (44)

Many things could change before next season. Doug and Baalke both believe they have their guys. Listening to them speak praises and actually resigning the same players. Cam looks to stay on the roster. Cleveland stunk for us but got a new deal. Scheriff has been average but is staying.  What they are saying is the players are good enough but it was the coaching and development was the problem. I disagree, I believe it's more Joe's over X's and O's.  Good players will still be good even without great coaching. We had probably the worst offensive line in the league last year. WE watched time and time again how they could not convert on 3rd and short and fourth and short. We watched Lawrence taking a pounding. We watched players in the backfield on running plays as soon as the ball was handed off. We watched this line get bullied most of the year.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." - Albert Einstein.

Doug and Baalke from their interviews seem to believe this line is not the problem.  So if this line fails again. These two should be blamed right after the season and handed their walking papers. Protecting the QB should be the top priority for this offense. He will have a very short career if we see a repeat of last year. I don't want to see another Joe Burrow(better when healthy than Lawrence IMO) where the injuries have added up and may cost him his career.

His final TD was against the Saints in 1999, where he had a punt returned for a TD. That was also his first start in his Jaguars career, where he finished the game with 178 all purpose yards and 1 TD.

Leon Searcy - his last game was in 1999 against the Bengals where the Jaguars won 24-7.

Tom Coughlin - last game was against the Colts in a 13-20 loss in 2002. His last win was against the Bengals where the Jaguars won 29-15 in 2002 in week 15.
