Deplaning in Los Angeles on a flight back from Korea, an older Korean woman ordered me to fetch her bag from the overhead bin. It was carry-on size but weighed as much as an anvil. 

On a wide body jet, there has to be a literal ton of baggage in the overhead.

The only reason people care about boarding order in economy class is so they can get dibs on carry on space.  If they just made you pay for it, they could board more quickly and save everyone time.  They would let all the window seats people in first, back to front, then let the aisle seat people in last.

Nah man.  Some people like me are usually able to travel light so they don't have to go to baggage claim.  This would unfairly penalize those and it would also entice people to pack more weight onto the plane in their free larger checked bag instead of making smarter and more efficient packing decisions and it would probably increase ticket prices for everyone as a result.  I don't fly a ton, but I've never not been able to find overhead space when I fly and I'm usually in the last group to board because I'm cheap and almost always shop on price.  They should just enforce overhead bin limitations per seat.  People that try to put their personal item up there should be forced to either hold onto it or put it under the seat in front of them.

Fly Southwest if you want the free checked bags... you'll notice they're usually higher on price on comparable direct flights so you're essentially paying for that checked bag whether you want it or not.
