Air travel keeps getting weirder.
From the time you buy your ticket, to the time you go through security, they tell you checking a bag is a premium experience that you have to pay extra for. So you either decide to splurge a little, or cram everything into a carry-on. Then you get to the gate and they're BEGGING you to check that bag, and now it's free! How does that benefit anyone?

Probably trying to keep the weight down. The heavier the plane the more fuel it uses.

The overhead bins fill up quickly and it’s amazing how much is packed into them. Miniaturized steamer trunks. Back when I traveled routinely for work, I could see it becoming more of an issue. Deplaning in Los Angeles on a flight back from Korea, an older Korean woman ordered me to fetch her bag from the overhead bin. It was carry-on size but weighed as much as an anvil. On a wide body jet, there has to be a literal ton of baggage in the overhead.

I feel like it should be reversed, charge for carry on, but one checked bag per passenger could be free. The only reason people care about boarding order in economy class is so they can get dibs on carry on space. If they just made you pay for it, they could board more quickly and save everyone time. They would let all the window seats people in first, back to front, then let the aisle seat people in last.

When I traveled all the time I had a small carry on specifically for a change of clothes, the book I was reading at the time, and my toiletries in case my checked bag got lost and never had any problems with having the carry on. The last time I flew in 2012 from Raleigh to Denver at the end of February was a nightmare. The luggage trouble alone from that trip swore me off of ever flying again. It was so bad I've blocked very specific details from my memory but I know we had to check everything and it was a logistical [BLEEP] storm on the side of the airline in both directions. And can you believe on the return flight - SURPRISE - luggage was lost. A lot of people's luggage was left on the tarmac in Denver, or some such stupidity. There is no reason for airlines to make things so difficult. I really miss pre-9/11 flying. First class and priority passengers waiting in line to board behind the unwashed masses? The horror of it all! That makes logistical sense, but too many people are willing to pay too much money for the privilege of boarding first for it to ever happen.

If we are traveling, I can promise that my family of 4 could fill those suitcases full for a week's travel, even if we don't use everything we pack. When I pay extra to check my suitcases they are certainly filled full, but they are also only 2 bags making the trip. The pay premium reduces frivolous packing or requires the less disciplined to pay for the privelege of overpacking. The check option at the gate is only when they realize there is space in the belly to fit more stuff and also helps save time boarding and deplaning. I would exclusively fly with an airline that either did not allow overhead storage or allowed those traveling without overhead bags to plane/deplane ahead of the others. If airlines give you a free checked bag per person, I'd expect the size to be limited to an overhead bin-sized bag to keep weight limits in check. If airlines wouldn't let people abuse the size restrictions on overhead/unchecked baggage, boarding and deplaning would be a lot easier. Sock manufacturers who seem to believe a women's size 5-10 or 'one size fits most' is accurate. I wear a size 10-11 depending on the make and model of shoe. My Birkenstocks fit different from my Altra sneakers and my trail Altra sneakers fit a bit different than what I call my 'road' Altra sneakers. My Birkie clogs fit a bit different than my Birkie sandals. All of this makes sense because they're different shoes for different purposes but a sock has one function and my socks that are 'size 5-10' are stretched to their limits and wear out faster than I think a sock actually made to fit a longer foot would. I've tried men's socks but my feet are too narrow.
Seriously. Put a size 5 shoe next to a size 9 shoe much less a 10-11 and tell me it makes sense. Are men's sock sizes as absurd? I've only bought them once for myself and it was many years back. Also, clothing sizes. I bought a pair of PJ pants to wear around the house and liked the fit and length so I bought another pair of that brand but in a different print and they're are not the same size even though the tag says they are. Old Navy jeans fit me really well and they have tall sizes. I'm 5'10" with long arms and legs and short torso so length is important. The only thing that sucks is they don't sell tall sizes in their stores (not the one closest to me anyway) so I have to drive an hour to the closest store, try clothes on to make sure they fit, then go home and order them online. Last year I bought a pair from their website. I liked them so last week I ordered another pair of the same exact make/model and size/length. I pulled them out of the package and tried them on. They were a size too large and about 1.5 inches shorter than the tag on them states. It's freaking ridiculous. First world problems but still it's absurd. I don't mind being tall but buying clothes and shoes is stressful.

I've tried men's socks but my feet are too narrow. little bit. sometimes an L is skin-tight, sometimes it's like wearing a hefty bag. My biggest prob is sizes are never available for me. Tall and skinny, and seems the only pants ever in stock are for those who are as big around as they are up and down, and nobody stocks shoes over size 11. I look like a hobo too since I dropped a BUNCH of weight once I started commuting by bike, so all my belts are cinched up super tight to keep my pants from sagging. I don't have as much problem with socks, but I am size 13 so I just buy the biggest size in stock and they seem to do fine.
Sitting in an urgent care vet room for 2+ hours because people use this place as their regular vet because they're too damn lazy to use a regular vet or make an appointment with the one they have. Your dog getting annual vaccines is not a freaking urgent care situation you jerk.
I'm only here because treatment from last week's visit didn't work and my cat's vet can't see him until next Tuesday. Plus, these folks need to follow-up on this since they saw him last week for the issue. This is the second time this year he's had to be seen here for this problem and the first time the treatment worked just fine. This is absurd. I've never had to wait this long. Your dog getting annual vaccines is not a freaking urgent care situation you jerk. Finally out of there. Evidently multiple emergency situations. Amerikitty.... I like that! He got an antibiotic shot and something to mellow him out. I'm thinking a whiskey for myself will do. That was super stressful. When you see a dog come in on a stretcher from their regular vet's office it's probably not going to end well and the owners are pretty upset. That was just one emergency that came in. I think the urgent care folks wanted the vaccine situation done and gone. It was a huge pitbull named Zeus and though he was super friendly and pretty low-key his size alone freaked a few people out.
When people take up most of the space in the break room refrigerator with bulky soft coolers. What is the point of keeping your lunch in an insulated bag if you’re going to put it in the fridge?

I assumed you understand the physics involved in heat transfer and R values and were looking for an answer to the more rhetorical question.
