Against one of the worst offensive lines in the league on a team with nothing to play for? If he looks good today I'm sure people will take it with a grain of salt and want to see more next year.

Former first round pick Dante Fowler felt miscast in his role as a left defensive end. Fowler succeeded in college with linebacker responsibilities. He felt the three-point stance made him one-dimensional.


"I considered myself more of a stand up defensive end, just because of how I move and how I feel," Fowler said. "I just feel more comfortable standing up honestly. I work really good working in space. I know in the NFL you really have to get up on the offensive lineman and I feel like that's good and everything in the three-point stance, but in a two-point stance with my speed and my athleticism, I have so many things I can do at one time to an offensive lineman. I must admit that I had him in the bust category already. I was never very high on him and wanted Beasley over him, which I still would, but he has been very good. He still isn't a DE that you line up over a LT and say go get him, but the team is using him exactly how he should have been used from the start. They move him around a lot and use his speed to run a lot of games and twists. I have been impressed with how much his bull rush has continued to improve. I always thought he was an 8-10 sack per year guy that could make splash plays at big moments and he's now becoming that player. Far from bust if he keeps clean off the field.

Couldn't do a single thing vs the worst OL in football. Teams have been exploiting that OL all year, but the Jags couldn't because they have an absolute scrub at DE.

Those two plays at the very end of the Jets game are really the only two plays that have opened my eyes as impact plays that actually might/should have mattered to the outcome. Other than that it looks like a guy who takes advantage of being the forgotten 4th best pass rusher on a dline that defenses just occasionally forget to account for.

He had immaturity problems, and couple that with our luck with drafting and you can't blame the doubters. You can't deny the athleticism though.

Looks like all those years searching for DE's, one failure after another through either the draft or FA, we were finally rewarded with 3 pro-bowl caliber ones on the same team.

Before we go dredging up old threads, I think the fact highlighted above should temper, if not outright negate, all criticisms of the past. Gus was a new dimension of calamity whose effects are still felt, as witnessed by our bipolar record and poor performance at home games. It will take an entire season to cleanse this team of his legacy.
