We can go back to our old ways when everybody used to leave at halftime because we were down by 17+ but we could hold our heads high knowing we had better character than the opponents.

Gene Smith was big on the high character guys who were all team captains and look where that got us. In reality, it's good strategy to get some of these guys as long as you don't invest too much in them (first round picks or high dollar free agents). DeDe Westbrook is a perfect example- a 4th round pick who we never heard a peep out of and may eventually become their number 1 receiver. Having a strong locker room also factors in and finally the Jaguars have that with guys like Calais Campbell. If ASJ messes up, he'll be cut quickly by Coughlin. The risk/reward was worth it in this case.

As if this is the first time we bring in someone with past issues: we traded for Dareus just a few months ago, he has been suspended twice as well, he was in the league substance abuse program as well, had the Bills organization saying the same things that Jungle Cat quoted about ASJ as well.

Sometimes these moves work, sometimes they don't, I trust the FO to have done their research and if he does a mistake again he'll be out, if he doesn't he's a clear upgrade.

If they bring in Wilson, TE's go from a weak point to a strength.  You have the blocker, the pass catcher, and the dual threat.  I like it.  Poor Koyack and Oshaughnessy get lost in the shuffle.

Not sure which acquisition you're counting on to be the "pass catcher", but I have yet to see a TE on this roster that can make that claim.  ASJ has played 4 seasons and has 105 total catches with rec.totals of 21, 21, 13, 50.  Niles Paul had one season with 39 catches, but every other season was single digits.  Luke Willson has played 5 years and has a total of 89 receptions.  Forgive me if I don't see our tight end savior among these guys......ASJ is a decent stop-gap guy, but I'm hoping that we get one of the pass receiving TEs in the draft.

I understand your concern and it is certainly valid.

Let me suggest that it is possible that he has managed to get his problem under control.

Granted this was long ago, and many players/addicts generally will relapse.

But if he has managed to be one who has learned to control his drinking, then perhaps he could develop into the player his physical skills suggest he could be.

I hope we get maximum effort from ASJ. According to this article, he "REALLY" wanted to play in Seattle, and was even willing to settle for less money to do so. Fingers crossed.

Although he's not an elite TE like nearly everyone wanted, ASJ is a really talented TE who has the ability to be a game changer. He's been impressive considering he's never really had a good QB throwing to him, since entering the NFL. He's a good route runner and he has really solid hands. He's become a better blocker, even though that might be the one weakness in his game, but he's far from terrible. If he's got his off the field demons under control, I'm predicting that he'll have the biggest season of his career here in Jacksonville. He should be the day 1 starter and I think his signing prevents us from selecting a TE, at least on the first two days of the draft.

I really like this signing... it enables us to not reach on picks in this draft because it basically sures up the final hole. Now we can just go for BAP's and will not have to rely on rookies to start. I think this will spell the end for either Koyack or O'shaunessy if not both.

side note: i have this key and peele moment (the substitute teacher who can't pronounce names) every time i see O'shaunessy's name. I pronouce it "O' -Shaun-Hennessy"... not really sure why but i figured i'd throw that in here.

We may not have to rely on the rookies to start, but Caldwell has made it abunantly clear that he's looking for starters early. Whoever he picks in the first two rounds, and probably in the first three, are most likely starting.  For instance, Vander Esch, Hernandez and Hurst would all be starters on their roster although Hurst would have to brawl Marcedes and ASJ to earn it.

I'm really excited to see what he can do. He seems to have his life together which is great either way, and he has all the physical attributes and ability to become an elite TE.
