It's been my experience that "white trash" is the same as "cracker" which is the derogatory term black folks use against whites. It would be on the same level (for lack of a better word) as "spic" or "wetbacks" for Hispanics, the "n" word for blacks, or "chinks" for Asians. 

It's an ugly world out there.

The phrase comes from House Negroes who used it as a pejorative against poor Southern whites before the Civil War. It then took up residence with the Yankees who to this day continue to look down upon us Po' Ol' Suth'un, Low Class Degenerates. As Americus notes it has related terms among other races that describe them in an unflattering manner, but Cracker, Honky and White Trash is all ours.

It's actually more linked to waste people, crackers, squatters and terms like that.
Its a rich vs poor thing and not really a black vs white thing.

However... the term was often used by black house slaves when speaking about white servants.

The term eventually evolved into the more used trailer trash. Which really is speaking on someone's moral failings as well as a wealth status...

But I wouldn't expect you to know that (or even google before making such a wild claim)
