Tom Coughlin: All Jags players should be at workouts

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001...t-workouts

Tom Coughlin said a few players were absent from the beginning of the Jags' voluntary offseason workouts. Jalen Ramsey and Telvin Smith are among players who have not be in attendance this week.

This is a nothing article. Kevin Patra is a pathetic excuse for a sports journalist.

I'm not sure Coughlin is allowed to say that. NFLPA could take issue.

Technically he did not say they had to be here but only that they should be here. Now the way he said it left no doubt about what he expects.

Missing in the article is the tone of voice that Coughlin instilled in his briefing today.

He's not and he could get in trouble for it.

He'll get some blowback for that quip.

Oh geez...

They SHOULD all be here.

He didn't say they had to be or inferred that by not being here something would or could happen to them.

He is who he is and he's gonna say things his way. He didn't break any rules I don't think.

And to continue to blow it out of proportion, it now appears on ESPN's front page.

Response from NFLPA president:

Quote: Jaguars executive V.P. of football operations Tom Coughlin say that all players should be present for voluntary offseason workouts. The president of the NFL Players Association says that voluntary doesn’t mean what Coughlin apparently thinks it means.

“Our CBA definition of voluntary is the same as the actual definition of voluntary,” NFLPA president Eric Winston said in a statement issued to PFT,” and prohibits anyone from threatening players to participate in voluntary workouts. This is precisely the reason players negotiated strict work rules and bright lines when it comes to offseason activities. We know, from experience, that not all coaches and executives will adhere to them and we always pursue any violations to protect our rules.”

This implies that Coughlin’s bright-line violation will be pursued, through the proper channels. The question at this point isn’t whether a violation happened but what the appropriate sanction should be.

Florio implying that sanctions are imminent is just Florio being Florio.

It could blow over with no action taken just as easily.

I expect TC to get a phone call or two and letters  from the league and players assoc, but i wouldn’t count on much beyond that.

To the NFL and NFLPA,

I suggest you adopt the term "blow it out your shorts."

Sincerely,

Tom Coughlin

It's not against the rules for Tom to say he thinks everyone should be there. It would be against the rules if forced or leveraged players to be there against their will, which hasn't happened

It’s definitely being blown out of proportion, but TC should know better than to even skirt the lines of ambiguity with such comments. Especially given the fact that he’s been thru this before with the NFLPA.

I honestly don't think it matters at all. The world and their wife knows Tom Coughlin would want everyone to be there, the players all know that, Jalen and Telvin know that.

I don't think him verbalising it puts extra pressure on them , when they already know that's what he thinks (and almost every HC too)
