A few problems with that.

Who on Earth were they trading him to that was about to take on his 2019 $10 mil salary? 
Why would he rather lose $8mil by not playing opposed to accepting the trade and getting paid by a new team? 

I think he is going through something.  Whether it's mental health and/or substance abuse - or some kind of intense family drama. I think this is something outside of football and money. 

Wish we knew.

I just heard on Good Morning Football that the team was blindsided by Smith's decision and are wanting to talk to him to understand what he is going through. If Telvin is having personal problems and needs time away from the sport, that's fine. I wish him the best, but I wish he would have informed the team of his decision before the draft. I just think that is the right thing to do.

While it's entirely possible the team drafted Williams to take over for Telvin in 2020 and didn't see #50 missing this season, I don't know that they reach for QW in the third and sign 4 journeymen if they were totally "blindsided." 

They keep tabs on players -  and I'm certain they knew something wasn't right - even if they didn't know to what extent.

In hindsight Caldwell's use of the word hypothetical was quite telling. It was a very unusual way to answer that question but I think he was trying to relay the severity of the situation to folks without actually saying anything

Man just when you get to the point of looking on the bright side and getting excited for next season, the heart of your defense suddenly decides to take a year off from football. I wish Telvin the best, he was always a role model for this team and his production was important for us.
Caldwell basically needs to trade for someone, i dont think the journeymen we signed (or Williams) can fill this role right now. Im really expecting Caldwell to step it up.

They knew they hadn’t heard from him. Any logical front office would prepare for the worst case scenario - and that goes for any position, but they were indeed blindsided.

It was more than just a logical front office reacting to a player skipping the voluntary sessions though. They were aware of how serious it was and prepare d accordingly

He does have to tell them something, specifically if he wants to keep from having to give money back. If it is mental health issues or some other health concern, he at least has to fill out paperwork.

A leader would let the team know what was going on at least at a high level. You can at least let them know you potentially weren't going to play.

Yes football is secondary, but it's just like any other job, you have to let know or you get fired when you don't show up.

Eventually yes but in his own time.

It's pretty obvious he's going through something so serious that he's stepping away from the thing he loves the most. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who's played with Telvin that doesn't consider him a leader just because he didn't talk to the team about it.  

Btw , he still hasn't missed any mandatory sessions. Meaning he's been under no obligation to have contact with the team
