Jaguars coaching candidates? (merged coaching threads)

I’d imagine if it were Meyer he could’ve asked them to wait until his prior arrangements, like being in the booth or on the telecast for the Natty tonight, to be completed as to not take away from that event.

What about Byron? How ironic if we hired him to lead us to the promise land?

(emphasis added) I can't guarantee a Super Bowl with Pederson. I couldn't guarantee a Super Bowl with anyone. But I defy you to look at the challenges this team faces and identify an available coach more openly qualified than Pederson. Pederson has won at the NFL level as a head coach. Has Meyer? Has Bienemy? Has Smith? Pederson has a proven track record of developing QBs. at the NFL level. Has Meyer? Has Bienemy? Has Smith? Are there some squestions about Pederson? Perhaps. Are the questions you have for Pederson seriously more daunting or troubling than they are for any of the other candidates? (01-11-2021, 08:09 PM)Dimson Wrote: What about Byron? Using the reasons and expectations you mentioned as the foundation of the decision. If Doug Pederson wants to be an NFL HC this year, I believe he would be very interested coaching the Jaguars if he's comfortable with the Jaguars GM choice. The Jets might be at top of Peterson's wish list because of his connection with GM Joe Douglas from their days with the Eagles. Whether Pederson wants to coach in the NY Metropolitan Area, after being in the frying pan in Philadelphia, could well be the key to whether he would accept a HC offer from the Jets.? The Falcons could be plenty appealing to Pederson because they have an owner ( Arthur Blank ) who has a good overall track record of winning. The Falcons are run like a first class operation. The one negative is their problematic salary cap situation. The LA Chargers have plenty of talent and Justin Herbert looks he will be a legit Franchise QB. The major question mark is the Chargers are the opposite of the Falcons when it comes to ownership. Playing decisions are often made based on contract, not performance. I strongly disagree with the opinion that many have, that the Chargers are at or near the top of the best NFL HC openings. I would put them near the bottom. Dean Spanos fired Marty Schottenheimer after a 14-2 season. A decision that contributed greatly to the eventual end of the San Diego Chargers. If Pederson becomes Chargers HC, I think he will regret the decision within a year.
I think any team looking for a head coach should definitely consider Pederson. 3 playoffs, 1 Super Bowl in 5 years. And his Super Bowl run was with a back up.

If contract offers are relatively close, the Eagles team leaders could be the difference in whether UFAs with more than one option decide not to sign with the team that Doug Pederson is the HC. Even with Pederson being a primary reason why many current Eagles team leaders have Super Bowl rings, often, bad experiences people have override good experiences. That much more when the bad experiences are recent. If Pederson sits out a year or is an Assistant Coach in 2021, I think he likely will be a much better NFL HC option than he is in the present coaching cycle.
I think the whole situation that just unfolded with the owner of philly and Pederson could be the biggest deterrent for khan. Before this year, with khan being almost an absentee owner, I would have said he’s a perfect fit. But now that it appears khan wants to be more hands on, I don’t see Pederson being the guy.

I’m also under the impression this didn’t come as big of a surprise to Doug as it did us and the media. I wouldn’t be surprised if Doug hadn’t already explored some options off the record in advance. His relationship with NYJ gm being the main example that is surfacing. If this is the case I don’t know if we were ever really going to be a huge contender to land him. Just my two cents. Did someone actually recommend Pederson? This guy should be blackballed from coaching again after that stunt he pulled against Washington in week 17.

I think the biggest argument against is what the team did once Reich left. Wentz, albeit coming back from injury, regressed, and ended up in a very public standoff between he and his coach. Add to that his DC is not an option to follow along. Whether justified or not, the court of public opinion plays a factor here, too. If players thought he tanked, benched players without merit, or just projected as abrasive, that's going to hinder your ability to draw free agents. He'll be a head coach again, but I think he needs a cooling off period to let some of this dust settle. He'll probably get a job as a coordinator for a while, and if he regains favor with the players he coaches, he'll be in the running then. TC scarred me, ain't no way in Hades I even have him under consideration. Got to look at more than one stat, the bigger picture (presently) is that Pederson has more negative than positive, the arrows are trending downward, in spite of that one year. Brian Billick and Gary Kubiak are offensive minded coaches who have won SBs, maybe we should give them a holler. So why does the player not get the blame for this dispute with a coach like he would EVERY OTHER TIME?!? I readily admit I don't follow the particulars of the Eagles like I do the Jaguars, but it's odd that Wentz gets a pass here when the player is ALMOST ALWAYS seen as the "bad guy" in these cases. Seriously. What happened in this standoff between player and coach? Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
