Jags and Free Agency

I understand about building teams via the draft. That is definitely how it should be done, but always believed that you plug holes in free agency with positions that may have weaker classes in the draft. So far, that isn't even a reality in this case. We're just signing low end competition and backups. I don't see one clear cut starter out of all the players we've signed. Just backups and guys who could compete for starting positions. Unless something really big happens tomorrow when teams have to get under the salary cap and we miraculously add a really quality starter for a position of need, I can't see this free agency as anything other than a complete waste of time. Ugh! That tells me that even if Meyer and Baalke are colossal failures, Khan is committed to sticking with them for the foreseeable future. I think I'm gonna be ill. This is very true, but we're already treating free agency like we are strapped for cash and Lawrence isn't even on the roster yet. That doesn't bode well. Not a lot of noise on Fuller, Golladay and Samuel. Lets get Trevor some more weapons!

That lineup doesn't really instill any confidence in me. (03-16-2021, 01:22 PM)Cleatwood Wrote: Not a lot of noise on Fuller, Golladay and Samuel. Lets get Trevor some more weapons! We got a starting DL, Safety and CB. Now we just need to sign Fuller to make DJ Chark, Laviska and james robinson job easier and a couple of cheap expendable bodies because jaguar players always getting injured as the season goes on, and we good to win the AFC South.

Oh yeah man, don't forget baby JJ Watt going to have his breakout season maybe 1.5 sacks and smoothie king going to be that DUDE on the oline! Going to be great!
I like the Griffin signing. He was injured last year. He's still young, if he can get back to form it'll be a good signing IMO.

The problem is his "back to form" hasn't even been very good. He has had 3 seasons of poor and 1 season of above average. The Griffin's just have bloated reputations because the media went gaga over the twin and Shaquem no arm stories. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
CB SHAQUILL GRIFFIN: THREE YEARS, $40 MILLION ($29 MILLION GUARANTEED)
Grade: Below Average Griffin has started on the outside since the Seahawks drafted him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, but it wasn't until 2019 when he began to solidify his spot as a No. 1 cornerback in the NFL. That year, Griffin earned a 77.0 PFF grade — a top-10 mark at the position. His 19.7% forced incompletion rate ranked second among all cornerbacks who saw at least 50 targets in 2019. However, that year stands out as an outlier when looking at Griffin's other three NFL seasons following his regression in 2020 (64.1 overall grade). Griffin will give the Jaguars some stability at outside cornerback along with C.J. Henderson, but this looks like a similar deal to the one Trae Waynes signed with Cincinnati last offseason — only with more guaranteed money. The Jaguars are paying a premium for a good, not great starting cornerback. Of course, they have the cap space to make moves like this, but even so, you still want to get value out of the contracts you’re handing out. I definitely believe Shad Khan will give Urban Meyer at least 3 seasons to demonstrate whether the Jaguars should continue to commit to his plan. It's realistically possible Meyer could resign earlier but I doubt Khan will be making the decision for Meyer. Because Trent Baalke is in more of a support role, I think he could be replaced sooner if his job performance isn't meeting the expectations of Khan and / or Meyer. Having expressed all of this, by no means am I predicting this new Jaguars regime will fail.
Guys, it appears to me we are going to build this team mainly through the draft. Historically the nucleus of a lot of perennial playoff teams are built that way. When TC came back we went down the free agent path. It produced our 2017 run as the foundation of the defense that year were acquired that way. While we had a great year it wasn't a long run. It also produced a few cap issues in later years. Who knows the right way, I certainly don't.

If you listened to Meyer this whole time, it really shouldn't surprise you. He's said multiple times that he believes there is no such thing as a bad player and they would lean heavily on fit and familiarity. |
