Have we been too harsh on Baalke?

Ranked worse where than Gene Smith?  This is officially Baalke's second year as Jags GM and do not even know if you can count the clown show from last year.   I don't know if Baalke is going to work out for us but comparing him to the puke of Gene Smith is injustice!  Gene goes down as one of the worse GM's for any team ever.

What people?  Whoever says that don't know what the blank they are talking about.  I remember how bad the Gene Smiith era was,  there was no sign of hope except for the delusional few who backed Gene.

Baalke may or may not be bad but mentioning him along side Gene Smith is just ludicrous!

Another scenario.  What if he really wants Walker but bends to the pressure to pick Hutchinson.  Walker turns into the freak 2.0 and hutch is just average.   It's the draft so there is no guarantees.

I personally think Hutch is the safer pick and could become a franchise face on defense but Walker has hall of fame talent if you go by his combine numbers.   I put more weight into game time and hutch has clearly done more.

Maybe Doug has wanted Walker all along snd his presumed penchant for offense is a smokescreen.

The only thing separating them is that Baalke is a great liar and manipulator.

Baalke and Pederson are having a great offseason. I expect that will continue the next 3 days.

Actually, that would be a dream scenario for Baalke. He could then turn around and say, "See? You should have listened to me and gone with Walker. So everything is all Pederson's fault - we need a new coach." Of course he's whispering that into Khan's ear when Pederson isn't around, because he's a weasel . . .

I am assuming because you are attacking someone's character you actually have first hand knowledge of these situations or personally know the guy right?  You don't seem like the type that would do that on what other people told you or on second hand hearsay.

Gene Smith literally traded up for blaine gabbert. I could list all his other first round busts like Alualu but I think the first pick is enough to warrant being absolutely inept at your job. I'd like to point out that Blaine Gabbert was so bad that his longest college highlight video on youtube is like 2 minutes long and exactly 0 of the plays in it are even impressive. And it gets worse if you watch his game-by-game snaps from missou

I think Baalke's nature has been discussed by several people, particularly in his manner of dealing with coaches. If a few people were saying they didn't like something about him, that would be one thing. This is something else. I keep going back to the LACK of positive feedback on Baalke's behalf when everyone was talking about his character and his poor decision making. NO ONE said a word on his behalf across the NFL - players, coaches, team executives.

I don't know Urbz either, but I'm pretty comfortable with my assessment of his character.

ok by me, I have just been looking for someone with first hand knowledge is all. I do know the coach he ran up against in SF wasn't the easiest person. I am hoping he learned a few things and this dynamic works better wih our current HC

And you didn't find anyone with first-hand knowledge. Just sky screamers who have no more insight than anyone else on this board.
Personally, I think Baalke has done a great job reshaping this roster in the short time he's been with the Jags.

Yes, James O'Shauhnessy, Rayshawn Jenkins, Sidney Jones, Phillipp Dorsett, Carlos Hyde, Tre Herndon, Jihad Ward, and Tim Tebow are going be great contributors this year!! Great job reshaping the roster!

Kidding aside, his free agency sucked last year, was pretty good this year (on paper) and last year's draft looks like it only had 2 or 3 clunkers in it so far.

This year's draft will go a long way to finding out if he's done anything to actually re-shape the roster. But, of course, we won't really know about much of the class right away.
So far Trent Baalke has missed on several FA signings and filled some obvious holes. "Reshaping" is a gross overstatement at this stage in a faltering rebuild that was set back miles by a coaching hire Baalke should have fought tooth and nail to prevent.

That is just it. We do not know if he fought it and never will.  The only opinion that really counts is the highest ranking guy in the room when a decision is made. In this situation after it is made you get on board or you get on down the road.  Another thing we will never know is if Baalke convinced Kahn to save the cap money till this year because he saw the train wreck coming.  Things that make you say hmmm...

You are welcome to excuse Baalke of any blame for the Urban Error if you so choose.
In my mind, he has to be somewhat complicit. At the end of the day - he failed to convince team ownership not to make a horrible decision and this is part of the job.

If he didn't fight, he's a fool. If he did fight, he didn't fight enough.

And, yes, there are many variables we don't know that could paint Baalke in a better light. Could also go the other way.

I'm glad he had a solid FA period this offseason and last year's draft looks solid or better, but I'm not trying to just look past the obvious mistakes until I see enough to constitute a trend in the right direction.

If you are going to fire him based on this past incompetence, isn't that a real indictment on the owners competence for hiring him in the first place.

I'm good with that.

It is ABSOLUTELY owner's incompetence that Baalke was retained after last season.
