So much for America First....... Ifg this doesn't cement the fact that the Democratic party HATES America and her Citizens in your mind, nothing will....... They WANT American citizens to suffer, that way they can make us more dependant on Big Brother Government.......

Biden Sending Oil Reserves Overseas as Gas Prices at Record Highs

More than 5 million barrels of oil that were part of a historic U.S. emergency oil reserves release aimed at lowering domestic fuel prices were exported to Europe and Asia last month, according to data and sources, even as U.S. gasoline and diesel prices touched record highs.

Top Democrat Baffled by Biden Sending American Reserve Oil to China

From this posted article: "More than 5 million barrels of oil that were part of a historic U.S. emergency reserves release to lower domestic fuel prices were exported to Europe and Asia last month, according to data and sources, even as U.S. gasoline and diesel prices hit record highs," Reuters reports. "The export of crude and fuel is blunting the impact of the moves by U.S. President Joe Biden to lower record pump prices. Biden on Saturday renewed a call for gasoline suppliers to cut their prices, drawing criticism from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos."

First of all, yes, the release of petroleum from the SPR is just a political stunt, and Biden's call for gas suppliers to cut their prices is a stupid thing to say and reflects profound ignorance of how the economic system works.

However, to say Biden is "sending oil overseas" is an equally dumb statement, which also reflects a misunderstanding of how the system works.

The price of oil is set on the world market.  Where crude oil goes depends on the type of oil it is, and what refinery is set up to handle that type of crude oil.  Biden doesn't "send the oil overseas."  He authorizes a release from the SPR, and the oil companies handle it from there.

And yes, releasing oil from the SPR is just a political stunt.  But to accuse him of "sending the oil overseas" is ignorant.

My rational brain agrees with everything you just said, However my lizard brain thinks it's too much of a coincidence that Biden sent out that dumb tweet, and wholesale gasoline prices started going down the very next day.   Coincidences like that will make a conspiracy theorists out of a lot of us...

A free market system works best when businesses try to make as much money as possible.  That brings competition, increased production, economic growth, and jobs.

You don't cure inflation by asking people to lower their prices.  That's idiotic.  This whole idea that inflation is being driven by greedy businesses is pure demagoguery.

If only there were such a thing as a truly free market system to test this assertion. Alas, there is not.

Of course, there is a real and direct way to correct the current problems we're experiencing, just nationalize the industry and stop the exports. The industry could be shepherded in a way that makes sense for the country now and in the future.

Unfortunately a lot of politicians who have vowed to see the ship sink all the way to the bottom would lose their mind about it.

So your solution to high oil prices is to have the  government run the oil industry?

It's the answer to the question of why America is exporting oil instead of using it for the benefit of the nation.

The question, if we ever did nationalize oil, is would the government use that power rationally like Norway does, rewarding expertise and reinvesting significant profits to improve operational efficiency, or would our government use it like Venezuela does, rewarding political loyalists and diverting all profits to social welfare schemes and corrupt politicians ?

Oh I know.
My best guess is someone in the oil industry tipped Biden off that some extra supply was about to be offered for sale, or that a big time speculator was about to abandon their market positions, and he timed that tweet perfectly to make it look like he ordered the prices to go down.

Just to be clear, are you saying you are in favor of the government taking over industries?  Just taking them away from the owners?

I'm saying if you want american oil to stay in America then the government would need to take over for the multinational corps, or at least regulate them in a way that the government is the party in charge and essentially running the show. With the various treaties the US is party to I'm not sure there's a realistic way to regulate the oil market side from taking over everything nationally.

I think it's pretty clear the current and last US government executive branch couldn't be trusted to do anything well, so when I talk about what the government could do to fix things I don't expect them to actually do it right even if they were to take over the domestic oil industry.

You don't need the government to take over an industry to solve this problem. You just need to limit the sale of US goods to the US in times of shortages. Global corporations are a problem and Americans need to be concerned about how they operate here.

Accurate. Regulating trade this way was just the way of the world from medieval times to the early 1900s.  It's still the way things work in developing countries.

It's just, not very efficient.  And it can be horribly mismanaged, as in the Irish Potato famine and the Bengal famine (both of them).

Socialism doesn't work.  When it comes to fuel I present exhibit A.

A.  Venezuela

Neither of which are socialist.

Oil is a big means of production and the state owns the oil in those countries.  The state owning the means of production is Marx's definition of socialism.
