Opinion | A shadow war in space is heating up fast - The Washington Post

While Washington officials and experts warn of the risks of an arms race in space, the United States’ adversaries are constantly conducting operations against U.S. satellites that skirt the line between intelligence operations and acts of war. The pace of conflict is intensifying, according to a top Space Force general, who told me that China could overtake the United States to become the number one power in space by the end of the decade.

“The threats are really growing and expanding every single day. And it’s really an evolution of activity that’s been happening for a long time,” Gen. David Thompson, the Space Force’s first vice chief of space operations, told me in an interview on the sidelines of the recent Halifax International Security Forum. “We’re really at a point now where there’s a whole host of ways that our space systems can be threatened.”

Right now, Space Force is dealing with what Thompson calls “reversible attacks” on U.S. government satellites (meaning attacks that don’t permanently damage the satellites) “every single day.” Both China and Russia are regularly attacking U.S. satellites with non-kinetic means, including lasers, radio frequency jammers and cyber attacks, he said.

Thompson repeatedly declined to comment on whether China or Russia has attacked a U.S. military satellite in a way that did permanent or significant damage, telling me that would be classified if it had happened. The Chinese military is quickly deploying ground-based systems for doing battle in space, such as lasers that can damage nosy U.S. intelligence community satellites, which could be considered an act of war.

“The Chinese are actually well ahead [of Russia],” Thompson said. “They're fielding operational systems at an incredible rate.”

Both the Russians and the Chinese are working on satellites that can attack other satellites, he said. For some time now there have been reports that China was developing a satellite that could claw another satellite or grab one with a robotic arm or a grappling hook. The Chinese government has several reasons to want to disable U.S. satellites, which have been useful in revealing concentration camps built to intern Uyghur Muslims and new Chinese nuclear missile silo fields...

Conventional thinking about how to deter an enemy from attacking on the ground, by sea or in the air doesn’t really apply to space. New doctrines and norms for space need to be established, mostly by diplomats. That work will take years. Meanwhile, the arms race in space is heating up, and the United States risks losing it if it doesn’t recognize this reality.

You're reading the Washington Post!

No, seriously, the article makes an excellent point.  Let's hope our government isn't asleep at the switch.  We should be leading the world in this kind of technology.

Cristina Fernández de Kirchner: Gun jams during bid to kill Argentina vice-president - BBC News

I don't know much about Argentine politics, but this guy sounds like a Liberal Socialist. Which I guess is a little better than the Communist (mostly) that Peru elected. Political apathy is so rampant in South America that the guy from the Dos Equis commercials could run in any of the countries and he would probably win in a landslide.

When science writing bows to woke-ism. The point being that radiation thresholds for each sex is different, regardless of the astronaut's gender identity. Rather than qualify the radiation requirements statement with an explanation of intrinsic differences in each sex and radiation exposure, she chose to use the less subjective term of gender. The immutable laws of physics have been nudged aside as a nod to genderism. Gender identities (disclosures) have absolutely nothing to do with radiation exposure limits. This is either lazy writing or a low-grade attempt at activism.

Astronauts' blood shows signs of DNA mutations due to spaceflight | Space

Astronaut cancer risk needs careful monitoring, concludes a study that stored spaceflyer blood for 20 years.

All fourteen astronauts in the study, from NASA's space shuttle program, had DNA mutations in blood-forming stem cells, a Nature Communications Biology study(opens in new tab) Aug. 31 concluded. The mutations, though unusually high considering the astronauts' age, was below a key threshold of concern, however.

While the study is unique for keeping astronaut blood around for so long, the results are not show-stopping. Rather, the researchers suggest that astronauts should be subject to periodic blood screening to keep an eye on possible mutations. (And it should be considered in context; another 2019 study, for example, found that astronauts are not dying from cancer due to ionizing space radiation.)...

NASA recently changed its lifetime radiation requirements for astronauts that critics said were discriminating against women, who historically had lower limits than male astronauts. (To date, other genders have not been disclosed in the agency population.)...

Unfortunately it would take more than 12 hours and the same or more gas than just driving a car to car it up with the generator.

Should start a business adding a motor to them so you can trick California and still drive places. That is until they ban all gas sells in the state.

Give it time. We may not even have to hold our breath.  Sad but true.

Disinformation!

Sweet.

Of course Newsweek comes out with a scathing critique. I wonder if they did the same for the movies about Trump?

I love that Gina Carano is in the movie. She was canceled by Hollywood for voicing an opinion that didn’t agree with their lockstep view.

Breitbart produced it but I'm not sure what the point or style is. They look to be making it too crazy that people will just laugh it off. It's supposed to be using the info off the laptop and other sources. The previews appears to just take it across the line. It's not far from the truth but the acting will just make it too sensationalized.

I'm hoping it more of a documentary instead of being done mocking it.

So, inflation is at 8.3% and Biden wants to celebrate. The media ask the press secretary what there is to celebrate about with inflation sticking around and the markets going nuts. She mentions the inflation reduction act and tells people to go to a website that lists how people can save money.

By learning how to:
-get a tax credit on an EV.
-buy an efficient heat pump and other appliances
-buy efficient insulation

And more but I don't remember what all she said.

Are these people dumb or just plain stupid? Our heat pump works just fine. Not super efficient compared to today's standards but it works. My truck and hubby's car are paid for and work just fine. I would love to have better insulation but not at the expense of buying it and the drywall, tape, mud and paint to replace what we would have to tear out.

People don't have the money to drop thousands of dollars on EVs, heat pumps, etc., especially when they are struggling to pay their light bill. We won't spend it until we have to. Until then we keep putting money in savings so we can spend it when the time comes. We just bought a new fridge a few months ago only because the old one was literally dying.

This "act" is pretty worthless.

If you have an attic, you could upgrade the insulation there without racking up too many other costs. Im pretty sure you own your home.
Rent has been going up fadter than overall inflation, at least here.

Do you see many EVs where you live? I'm seeing more and more.

But yeah. I kind of wish Biden would tell it to us straight and admit that most people's income is not keeping up with inflation. Admit that this is a belt tightening period for a lot of the necessities of life. I feel like Americans can accept that. We accepted it when Carter said so (Carter lost due to Iran hostage crisis, and Reagan's charisma, not inflation. Inflation went even higher after Reagan was elected but voters didn't react) The Japanese have accepted that message for nearly 30 years now. Americans can be tough like that, if our leaders tell us we are that tough. But our leaders (since Carter) treat us like softies. Its probably too late for Biden to change tack.
