Week 5: Texans vs Jags

It'll only be a matter of time before ETN breaks one loose. Dude has explosive acceleration. It's coming.

Fortner and Bartch might have their easy matchup all year.  If they have a bad game it's time to start looking at Lanen and Shatley

The only way Fortner isn't playing is if he gets injured. Shatley isn't good, otherwise he would have beat Fortner out from the beginning. You started the rookie at center so you ride with him through his ups and downs, which he is definitely going to have as a rookie.

I highly doubt they take Fortner out but if he continues to struggle against arguably the weakest team at the DT spot in the league they should.  He wasn't ready week 1 and the reason Shatley struggled in camp is because they were playing him at LG.  We have seen Shatley for years now at C and he is decent, Fortner has struggled so far and there hasn't been many ups.  Right now I think it would be best to have Shatley at C until Fortner gets ready even though i  doubt Doug will do it.

I have a bad feeling about this game.

Fortner is not coming out. He’s the starter for the foreseeable future.

Hopefully Connor can take a page out of Chiasson's book and learn to play special teams.

Snoop Connor was never really part of the plan it would appear.

He was insurance in case Robinson was not ready, but he was more than ready. Looked like they tried Connor a bit early on but realized they just didn't need him. JR was capable of taking on a full load.

From what I've seen, this new involvement of Hasty is nothing more than a small handful of plays designed to utilize his speed around the edge. I don't know if it signifies much about Connor.

It's a looooonnnngg season. We may still yet discover what Connor is capable of in a real NFL game before it's all said and done.
Too soon to assume much IMO.

I have a different take.  I didn't see Snoop Conner as JRob insurance.  I saw him drafted as a role player.  I think that they took him to be the power back / short yardage specialist.  In college, he had 26 TD's.  14 were from 1 yard out and another 5 were from within the 5 yard line.

It's a useful role.  The Jags have struggled in the red zone.  They wanted a guy who when it is 1st and goal from the 5 that you can pound him up the middle 3 times and get a TD or at least be such a threat that the defense has to sell out to stop it which opens up other opportunities.  They wanted a guy who when it is 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1, you can get the 1st down.  They also wanted the guy who could close out a game when we have a lead.  For example, the Colts game.  We had a big lead and wanted to kill the clock.  IIRC, we had four 3 and outs.  It would have been nice to get a couple of first downs to ensure victory.  That situation isn't JRob's strength.  They were hoping it was Snoop's.

It was an understandable need.  The problem is that Snoop disappointed.  He looked terrible in preseason and I assume in practice as well and has been a healthy scratch every week.  Hopefully, he is just a rookie needing time to develop.  However, I have yet to see potential. It may just be a case where Baalke misevaluated.  If you look at it, his day 3 picks last year and this year are contributing virtually nothing to the team.

Yeah I’m really happy with the draft overall, but I agree we may have missed on snoop

He's a good back and an even better story.

Stopping the run is the key to winning this division

Nailed it! And I would add in just playing average offense could sneak us into the playoffs. This division is still up for grabs if they can find a way to win against the Colts.
