Zay is a borderline 1,000 yard guy this year. DId anyone seriouly think that before the season?

I was his biggest cheerleader before the season and I thought 800 yards and 6 TDs was probably where he'd max out.

I think I saw maybe 3 or 4 youtube highlights when we signed him.  But from that small a sample size, it looked to me like one of those guys who runs good routes and has good hands.  I had no feeling about how many yards he would have.

If Zay continues on current form, Engram is re-signed and Ridley does sign. Do we need to draft a receiver early still? Makes sense to take one at some point but would you still use a high pick (particularly if the playoffs happens at the picks are a lot lower than usual!)

If everyone claims that TLaw makes everyone around him better, including the current band of receivers, it's really difficult to make WR a priority. we need a corner, help on lines, and TE (even if we re-sign Engram) so much more than another WR.

Oh yeah, and it would be kinda cool if there were more than Etienne in the RB room, too.

Also props for the 2nd effort block by Manhertz to give Trevor that extra step to make the throw. He didn't stop after getting beat and saved the play.

His route running reminds me a lot of Keenan. The guy is an absolute beast against zone coverage. Very cerebral player who does all of the little things that often go unnoticed.

Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency. 


1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.  

Learn from the great collapse of 2023.

When you give these guys a Harrison, a Moss, a Owens, an Adams, a Chase, a Calvin or Andre Johnson? A Hill? They become damn near impossible to stop.

Just comes down to value. I don't think they have to spend a top 20 pick or 32nd overall pick on a WR if they clearly feel value is better elsewhere there.

Would be thrilled if they drafted Skoronski, Mayer, Porter Jr. on the opening night. I think a receiver like A.T Perry or Dontay Demus Jr. would be great additions in RD2 or RD3 respectively.

If we get the 2020 version of Calvin Ridley, we have our dominate #1 guy. A lot of people were saying he was the BEST route runner in the NFL that year. And if you watch some of his stuff, man he's smooth with it.

The current receiver room is making WR less of a need right now, regardless of the question mark that Ridley is 2 years removed from playing a snap in the NFL. Baalke, for all the ill will toward him, may have made a masterclass level move if Ridley pans out. Even assuming he’s reinstated early next year, they can’t bring him in prior to the draft though, right? Can Trevor and he independent from the team start working together after the season and before the draft? If so, they’ll probably be relying on his commentary on how great a need WR is. Seems like we’d really want to get a good bead on Ridley prior to the draft if possible.

Absolutely. When you ignore adding skill players because your QB is so good, you end up like the Packers. Passing on Justin Jefferson because “Rodgers will make anyone look good.”

Imaging trying to stop GB last year with Jefferson AND Adams. Then, when you ship Adams out, you still have JJ on a rookie deal.

And as excited as I am for Ridley, we truly don’t know what he’s going to look like on the field

I have no issues adding a WR, but not so sure I'd want to do it in the 1st round.. unless the best WR available is leaps and bounds better than the DBs/OLs left on the board at the moment.

Could I ask a favor?  For the ones of us who are not following the draft yet, it would be nice if you guys who do know the players in the draft could add something when you name these guys, like "WR" or something like that.  Because I'm sure I'm not the only one who is in the dark when you say Skoronski, Mayer, Porter Jr, and so forth.  

If you don't want to do that, it's okay, I understand, you have no obligation to me to bring me up to speed on who these guys are.

Skoronski is a tackle. Mayer is a TE. And porter jr. a CB.

IIRC the suspension is up for review in Feb, darft isn't until April. May not be with TLaw, but I'm sure they'll have a chance to see him run some routes, study film, etc

Kinda weird, most years by November we all have functional knowledge of the top 50-75 prospects in the darft
A few of the same posters have done some extra homework on some of these guys in the college thread already, and all mentioned are worth a look:

Peter Skoroski (OT, Northwestern)
Michael Mayer (TE, Notre Dumb)
Joey Porter JR (CB, PSU)

I think all the other guys mentioned are WR, and I can't say with confidence which schools each played for.

Tom Brady had the greatest WR of his generation (Randy Moss)  and you know how many SuperBowls he won with that WR?

ZERO.

We have a great QB.  He will make good WRs great. 

We need to protect our QB and we need to attack the other QB.

I'd maximize him in 2023 by fixing the protection issues on OL before addressing WR. 

I'm fine with adding talent to the WR group, but giving him a better pocket and more time in it is just as crucial.
More so IMO.
