2023 Offseason Roster Moves

The two players I'd seriously consider are Dalton Risner and Bryce Callahan. Neither of these would "break the bank" yet both would provide Baalke much needed flexibility for the draft. While Risner has been a solid guard in the NFL, he played 3 seasons at right tackle in college. He'd likely win a starting spot at guard for the Jaguars, but would be an option to consider if either Robinson or Little are forced to miss any games. It is possible that the team is targeting someone like Darnell Wright in round 1 or Matthew Bergeron/Jaelyn Duncan/Cody Mauch in round 2. If that is the case, Callahan might be the better option. He could immediately start at nickel and the Jaguars could still draft a corner since this position is extremely deep.

I'm not sure I trust him to do that. I think Dave Caldwell was better at drafting later in the draft than Baalke.

Hard to argue that point. That's why I hope he's keen on trading up more than anything. I wouldn't even be against a trade down next month. If he's able to convert the 24th RD pick into a 2nd RD pick and 3rd RD pick and a future 1st RD pick I wouldn't be opposed to it.

I would rather have ammunition for next year's draft class. We're looking at potentially Brock Bowers at TE and Marvin Harrison Jr. at WR next year if they declare. Would be tremendous having a pair of first round picks next year while still getting enough value in this year's draft.

I would be fine with a combination of Isiah Foskey and Cody Mauch in RD2 next month. I would be fine with Dawand Jones and Byron Young in RD3 next month. Grab a pair of edge rushers and offensive lineman in RD2 and RD3 and call it even.
Depending on who is still available at 24, a trade down wouldn't be the worst idea.

However, regarding Harrison and Browers, they're both likely top 10 picks and Harrison will be top 5. Not sure Jags will be able to snag either of those guys even with an extra 1st in 2024.

Stranger things have happened. The team that forks over a future 1st could eat [BLEEP] due to a key injury or two and then we ultimately have a top ten pick.

That’s pure needs based drafting. I wouldn’t draft a nickel corner in the top 3 rounds. That’s an undersized corner who’s not on the field the whole time. You find those guys in the later rounds or bargain basement free agency. Draft a strong, physical corner who can run with the big dogs in the first three rounds.

That’s pure needs based drafting that ignores premium position value. I wouldn’t draft a nickel corner in the top 3 rounds. That’s an undersized corner who’s not on the field the whole time. Calais heading to the falcons is pretty lame. However, he is going to live off this money the rest of his life, so I guess he made a business decision.

Like I said, was as simple as how much pay.  I can't see the reason being chasing a ring at Atlanta, could be wrong.

That's a good move. Puts him on another ascending football team and he could legitimately make a difference there opposite of St. Brown and with Goff undercenter.

I believe you misunderstood me. I'm not against drafting a top corner in rounds 1 or 2. Porter, Witherspoon, Gonzales and Banks would be excellent picks in round 1 as would Brents and Phillips in round 2. All of these players could immediately start at corner in 2023 unless the coaching staff feels Williams would be a liability at nickel. In that case, the rookie would be the starting nickel in 2023 and then replace Williams as cornerback in 2024. Williams has improved since being moved to corner, but he'd be a prime candidate to be released in 2024 due to his salary cap figure.

We do disagree, however, on the importance of the nickel-back. Most defenses utilize 5 defensive backs about 60% of the time. Good quarterbacks will target the "weak link" consistently to take advantage of mis-matches. I like the effort that Tre Herndon displays on the field, but he lacks the athleticism and speed to cover good receivers. He was an undrafted free agent for that reason and his PFF ratings have been very poor. I mentioned Bryce Callahan due to his success playing nickel and the reasonable price they could sign him for. If the Jaguars don't sign Callahan or draft one of the top corners, I wouldn't hesitate to draft Quan Martin or Tre'Vious Hodges Tomlinson in round 3 or Riley Moss in round 4 to upgrade the nickel position.

MJJ is a true professional that will be missed.
Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency.

1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

Learn from the great collapse of 2023.

One of the best character guys in the league chose the falcons over a future power house Jaguars team. It further proves that it’s always about the money everytime.

Calais can take that money and buy whatever ring he wants. Lawrence Taylor sold his ring because he needed money.

I’m still hoping the Jaguars can pick up a veteran DE.

Disagree.   He knows he has diminishing skills and will not be criticized for his play when the Falcons go 6-11 this season, not to mention he probably got more money.  Atlanta also has a much better vibe then Jacksonville for a professional athlete and some of the best strip clubs (oops, i mean) lemon and pepper wings in the country.

I think, despite commenting publicly that he was looking for the best shot at a ring, Calais and his agent ultimately went after money and maybe some other assurances or accommodations that made ATL more attractive.

Not the best football decision for CC, but you can't control these outcomes and can only offer what makes sense for the organization.
