Something people aren't considering is the possible mega deal Calvin Ridley gets if he's his old self.

A multi year deal with huge cap increases coming when we already have a ton of space the next few years. We're fine. We're really only tight this year and MAYBE next.

IMO those future year numbers are only a problem if the players aren't here and the money is completely dead. If Christian Kirk is still here in 2 years and playing well at age 29 then the 13 million in dead cap won't be an issue. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

Why would that be wishful thinking? All teams count on their higher draft picks taking big second year jumps... It's part of the plan... For all teams. We are banking on Lloyd making a big jump in ability this year, which may be wishful thinking at best. At this point, White is the better talent. Actually I am not arguing either. All I can say is if anyone listened to our GM and Head Coach my guess is unless it is a deal we can't refuse we are in the DRAFT and DEVELOP mode. So we are going to covet all the picks we have. After all this is not fantasy football where you just plug and play players. In case you missed it a couple comments from our management's answers to questions over the last few months. "Free agents are certainly more expensive" "We are in the draft and develop mode" "We feel really good about the nucleus of young players that we have on the team" "As you transition into more players on their second deals it becomes more difficult to improve your team with free agency" "We want a good mix of our players on their first contract and second" additionally Kahn recently made it clear money pushed into the future is restricted to OUR guys. (not free agents) So unless these high priced guys want to come here on a dime with little or no impact on our draft capital my crystal ball sees it as a no go. Just my opinion, I have been in error before and will again..lol

You would have to be a moron to show up to voluntary activities without a signed contract. And nobody is going to feel obligated to hurry up and sign their franchise tender to keep from missing voluntary workouts. Wishful thinking, but I hope nobody around here gets bent out of shape over it. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

So Dilla dropped a poll today seeing if people would give up a 2nd rounder for Budda.
https://twitter.com/E_Dilla/status/16479...60672?s=20 Then, a couple hours later, Dov Kleiman sent a tweet saying that Budda is likely going for a 2nd or 3rd rounder..... https://twitter.com/NFL_DovKleiman/statu...66977?s=20 Reading some tea leaves? Jags could be making a move for Budda. (04-17-2023, 12:30 PM)Cleatwood Wrote: So Dilla dropped a poll today seeing if people would give up a 2nd rounder for Budda. So cough up a 2nd and get this guy who wants a new contract? Are we sending Jenkins in the trade to move his money off our books? I dunno.... just seems like a lot. For a really good player no doubt but I'm not sure we should make such a move. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Ask the fired JDR and Shack how going all in on a championship worked out. The window gets artificially closed if you make dumb win or else decisions. Sure some people make "smart" all in decisions and get rewarded but for every LA Rams Superbowl there are Jaguars exits to obscurity (see JDR and Baloney years).

The criticism of the pick was more that we didn't know JRob was gonna blow his wheels off and spent a first round pick on what equates to a luxury selection. When the roster is built, you can take an RB at 32 without worry about the gaping holes you're leaving elsewhere on the roster. The fact that they did better with a guy taken in the seventh isn't really doing much to bolster the argument for taking RBs early regardless of roster completion. I don't mind putting future money out there on guys we expect to be here playing, and most of those we just extended fall in that category. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

Dead cap money hits the cap whether he's here or not. That's what I'm saying. So whether you plan to keep a guy or not, that makes no difference in whether you want to push the accounting into the future. The money's already been spent. The only decision is whether you want to pay him his base salary and keep him on the team. When you push a cap hit into the future, you're not pushing the payment into the future. The payment has already been made. So if you want to push a cap hit into the future, whether that player is going to be on the team makes no difference in the decision. Because the money has already been paid. The team is just doing a little accounting trick to shift a cap hit from one year to the next. |
