I would just like to say, and I'm sure most of you agree, that I appreciate the hell out of NYC wading into the political forums and taking on the mob. This place is an echo chamber most of the time and it's refreshing to get a different perspective that is argued well and in measured tones.

I agree. I believe free speech and debate are absolutely vital to a healthy society.

The President and the Speaker of the House reached an agreement to [BLEEP] the American Tax Payer for another two years. Great.

I fail to see much difference between what he does and what I do, but yeah, the more the merrier.

The debt limit is so idiotic.  It's not really limiting the debt; it's just refusing to pay it.  The debts are already there.  We bought stuff; now we need to pay for it.  If they want to limit the debt, they need to cut the spending.

It's as if a person said, "I'm too far in debt.  I think I'll quit paying my credit card bill."  Does that make any sense?  No.

I tend to agree.  Congress should never be able to put the President in a catch 22.
At the very least Congress should give the President clarity about what order to pay the bills, and if partial payments should be made, if money is running out.
I think Biden's original stance is basically right, that this is not something to negotiate over, and spending cuts should be discussed in the ordinary budget procedure.  However once Biden realized McCarthy was serious, he shouldn't have held out. Right or wrong McCarthy gets to decide how the debt limit is passed, not Biden.  More people voted for Republicans in 2022 and they did so after hearing McCarthy promise to use the debt limit this way.  Biden should have respected McCarthy's efforts to keep that promise with the voters.

I just finished a 6-part series on the Spanish Civil War, which ended in 1939 with the victory of Francisco Franco and his subsequent dictatorship.  It's on youtube. What I found very fascinating about it was that, I've always been under the vague impression that it was a clear case of good guys vs bad guys.  But in reality, it was not that simple.

From Wikipedia:

"The dictatorial regime of Francisco Franco came to power during the Spanish Civil War, which pitted a government of democrats, anarchists, socialists, and communists, supported by the Soviet Union and international volunteers, against a rebellion of conservatives, monarchists, nationalists, and fascists, supported by both Hitler and Mussolini, with the rebels ultimately winning."

I watched it because I'm planning to visit Spain soon, and I want to know more Spanish history.

If you're interested in history, here it is.  This is a really deep dive into the Spanish Civil War.

War is rarely ever as simple as good guys vs bad guys.

Well, he's not a smarmy [BLEEP] pretending to be something he's not, so it's pretty clear most everyone else can see that great, big difference between the two of you.

I really don't care about paying the debt, I care deeply about the continued spending-like-drunk-sailors-at-the-shore-leave-brothel that's adding to the pile.

Or maybe make the bottom half of our society at least kick in a little something. If they have to pay for government spending instead of just consuming tax dollars perhaps they will better understand our predicament. Give 'em a 1% federal sales tax so that money can start going back into the coffers.

Hey now!  As a sailor I resent that remark.  We quit spending when we ran out of money.

That's only because you couldn't spend other people's money. If you could've, wellllll....you'd still be in there.
