Jags to Hire Nielsen (Merged Threads)

I don't mind them going with the up and comer. Seems to be aggressive and not a bend but not break type of coordinator.

I'm a big fan of Press-Man coverage. I like aggressive attacking defenses. Even if you get burned occasionally I'd rather that than let a good QB sit back and pick apart your zone up and down the field.
Also, he did this with their defense paired with the 26th scoring offense (we were 13th), 27 giveaways on offense (we had 30), 17th in total offense (we were 13th). In fact the only thing the ATL offense was better than us at was rushing the ball and slightly more efficient at third down. So being saddled with a worse offense, they were better than us in almost every category. Some of these are redundant to what's been posted but I like to list them next to the Jags stats for comparison. Total Def: ATL 11th, Jax 22nd Passing Def: ATL 8th, Jax 26th Rushing Def: ATL 20th, Jax 9th. The skewed stat here is we allowed 15 rushing TDs, ATL allowed 11 Scoring Defense: Tied RZ Def: ATL 4th, Jax 17th 3rd Down: ATL 3rd, Jax 8th Sacks: ATL 42, Jax 40 ATL had 8 players with 3 or more sacks, Jax had 3. Really the only thing we were undoubtedly better at was getting INTs, but that tailed off late in the season as well. Now again, the opponents we faced skew these stats a bit, but ATL didn't exactly play Carolina 17 times either. I love the hire personally.

Other positives are the stats the Falcons finished high in comparison to the league. Consider that this defense had Desmond Ridder and Heinicke (I think) as the guys trying to keep the offense on the field. D probably had a lot of opportunity, if ya get what I'm sayin.

If folks want to believe that the GM Baalke overrode Doug Pederson on his own coaching hire - that's fine I guess, but I'm calling bull [BLEEP] on that one. Makes no sense. The odds of Doug being even remotely OK with that are insanely slim. (BTW - if Baalke wasn't staying he'd likely have been gone 2 weeks ago - we already knew he was staying) (01-23-2024, 09:08 AM)Mikey Wrote:(01-22-2024, 07:40 PM)Eric1 Wrote: Ding Ding Ding. I also remember Josh Allen's rookie campaign as a DE in a 4-3. Pretty impressive. But yes, that whole thing matters less in every season that passes but we'll hear all about "wrong personnel" at 3 or 4 positions anyway. We may have some wrong personnel - but it has more to do with the player than the position IMO.

The coach hires his assistants - and ppl who think Khan is letting Trent Baalke micro manage Pederson's coaching hires are gullible or confused IMO. If it is true -- then we have a problem. I think it is not true. (01-23-2024, 11:47 AM)NYC4jags Wrote:(01-23-2024, 11:43 AM)nhiverson Wrote: I can never get the twitter links to show anymore no clue what I'm doing wrong. What you saw from Dilla is very incomplete information that many are interpreting as more than what was actually conveyed. The odds of it being "Baalke hired a DC Doug didn't prefer" are insanely low. NFL teams simply don't work that way - and they really don't work that way when your HC has a damn SB ring. Don't believe everything you see on twitter. It's full of jackasses who don't understand the league. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! There wasn't a misinterpretation, it was clearly written. Now the discussion on it being factual or not, that is totally different. He posted a screenshot, he didn't post anything last week so it's just him stirring the pot or trying to show that he knew. It could be true or it may not. If it is true, then the situation is not good as there is a power struggle. We probably won't know. The Iggles worked exactly that way and lost Pederson and likely Sirriani before to much longer as a result. The owner's cabana boy GM wormed his way into being the voice for the franchise and now they're on the cusp of sending off their second good coach as a result. I can't imaging Shad would let that happen here, but Trent Baalke gives off this vibe: ![]() “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
Hopefully we can bring back Calais Campbell on a 1 year deal to join the rotation; even if he can't be a full time player his experience in Nielsen's system and his leadership will be worth its weight in gold! he's solid against the run and a good rusher on the interior. I'd much rather bring back him than Chaisson.

Del Rio was our head coach and not our defensive coordinator. Ryan Nielsen has been coaching in the NFL for the last seven years including having experience as a defensive coordinator, co-defensive coordinator and as an assistant head coach. He also has a dozen years of college coaching experience including multiple years as a college defensive coordinator. It's not exactly a weak resume. In regards to past defensive coordinators, yes, Dom Caper had a long resume. You forgot Greg Williams. Prior to the Jaguars, his prior experience included defensive coordinator for four years, assistant head coach-defense for four years and head coach for three years. Mel Tucker and Bob Babich also both had prior experience as defensive coordinators prior to joining the Jaguars. Gary Moeller had been an NFL head coach, NFL assistant head coach, college head coach and college defensive coordinator, although technically was never an NFL defensive coordinator. It's true many of our prior defensive coordinators had never been NFL defensive coordinators before, but that's not always a bad thing. Mike Smith left the Jaguars to become a head coach. He remained as head coach with his new team for seven years. Dick Jauron also left to be a head coach. He remained five years with that team and later got a job as head coach with a second team for another four years.

Decent read on our new DC; there was an even better article from a smaller Atlanta publication i'll try and find.
