Zay had 823 yards on 121 targets in 2022. I feel like if you give any average NFL wide receiver that many targets they could replicate that. I like Zay too but I dont think well miss him all that much.

Zay was very likable and I think that's why people are sad to see him go. He's a depth reciever on a good team and for what he was being paid I think that could be used better elsewhere. I agree with basically everything cleatwood has been saying. He was never good I'm not sure what's making people think that. Maybe because we've had such bad receivers over the years.

He was good in great games back in 2022. We don't make the play-off's without some of the catches he made. In particular, the games against Baltimore, Dallas and the road win against the tacks. 

Had he help up physically in 2023? We might all be singing a different tune. Things just didn't workout for him in year two of his contract. It's the NFL. These things happen. Would be funny if he ended back up in Buffalo.

I don't think anyone is even denying that but go back and look at his 2022 stats and specifically his game logs.

The ones you listed were 3 of his 5 good games (the other being the Chargers games) out of about 25. Now 2023 was certainly injury riddled but it happens.

I think Zay is an average WR and not worth 11 million dollars as a WR4.

I think I may have jinxed it by putting him on my predicted 53 man roster last night.

I liked Zay and was hoping we'd keep him.  Rookies sometimes take a little time to develop and we saw what happened last year when injuries hit our wide receiver room.  That being said, I'm not surprised.  It was a ton of money for a 4th wide receiver.  Most teams let guys like that go.

I don't think so.  They signed Ezra Cleveland this off-season to a 3 year, $24 million deal with over $14 million guaranteed.  

My guess is that they are going to enter into serious discussions with Trevor Lawrence about an extension.

I think this boils down to the oft overlooked and buried league rule of only being able to have 4 Jones's on your roster at any given time. Once Jarrian was drafted and Steven picked up in UDFA we had 5 with Tim, Zay and Mac. Somebody had to go.

It's just a numbers game. He was on borrowed time the moment they signed Davis. He was immediately on notice once they drafted Brian Thomas Jr. There's only so many receivers you can have out there at once.

I get it. I just hope Lawrence is able to get his chemistry down quickly with the newcomers. As far UDFA's, Cephus makes for the most intriguing prospect, but, we'll see.

The main thing circles back to the offensive line. A lot of our play calls have had to be quick, in and out stuff because they can't hold up worth a lick in other areas of the passing game. We probably could have had more out of Zay and Calvin to be fair.

Hopefully they do something with this cap space though. Go get a veteran EDGE or another big presence at CB. Go get another veteran Guard to shore up some of the summer camp bodies for a spot to earn.

he had one bad year of drop percentage that skewed the mark. He wasn't some consistent ball dropper. Go look at his advanced stats over the seasons. 

This is about salary, injury, and lack of ST value more than his value as a receiver. 

No biggie - but don't try to cherry pick some bull [BLEEP] to paint your revisionist history.

What exactly is being cherry picked?

Was he not 67 out of 68 in drop%?

He had 1 good year in his career and it was 2022. 7 of his 8 career seasons were average or worse. He is what he is. He's just a guy and I think his production will be replaced in this offense by an UDFA.

I'll spell out for you why it's a cherry picked number

21 drop rate 1.9%
22 drop rate 10%
23 drop rate 2.9%

Whatever - he's gone now and we have new blood starting and new blood to develop as depth.
Protection was a bigger issue for this passing game than the receiving corps.
We'll be fine if the line plays better.

He wasn't just a guy in 2022 - he was clutch in big moments for our offense and we don't make the post season that year or win the game vs LAC without him. And that is despite his drop rate.

He's a good patch job pick up for a team that faces a lot of zone coverage in their division needing a Z receiver IMO.

Agree with this.   He's a big receiver with good hands.    It'll depend on whether or not he can get separation from the #2 CBs in the league.

Trevor appeared to trust him for one half of one game (Bucs), but for whatever reason he wasn't used much last season.

Not to be too redundant with others, but I’m sad to see him go. I liked him because he was a good guy and a competent receiver. We had been through quite a drought of competent receivers. But the business decision to move on from him was sound. Happy trails, Zay. Hope you land anywhere but the stinking Tacks.
