How far away is this team from being consistent playoff team?

They don't hire them and tell them to change what they do well. That is what I said above (first 5 sentences)  We agree there.

Recipe for disaster IMO - unless your owner is a true football guy. It doesn't take a football guy to see the big guys pushing our little guys around (quote from my 93 year old mom)

And I disagree on the "bigger in then trenches" comments and direction as well. Since this was the annual "State of the Jaguars" report I do not agree Shad and Tony didn't have input on this. Jabbing Doug during this speech would only be a political loss for Baalkie in the Kahn's eyes. (basic psychology)  Baalkie is going to manage the way it is acceptable to Kahn or get his paycheck somewhere else.

I think that was 100% Baalke taking jabs at Pederson's ZBS and Doug's strong desire for ultra athletic linemen. I doubt Khan had anything to do with it.

At the end of the day no biggie. Disagreeing is at times quite good. ...Wink

Definitely all good.

To be clear - here's where you lost me:

You said "You do not hire a coach and let him execute his vision"

But it would appear from everything you and I have said since then that what you really meant was "owners need to make sure they hire a coach whose vision aligns with their own" - which I agree with.
I think if you hire a guy and have to tell him, no, don't do it that way, then you screwed up and hired the wrong guy. Not that you don't intervene - that's fine - but it is a bad sign if an owner is forced to do so.

The problem in Jax with that approach is that Khan wants to lean on the GM and coach to sell him on their vision rather than mandating his executives find a coach that will operate under his own principles  of "x, y, & z"

No idea if Khan is now in a place where he can see clearly that his own vision deviates from Baalke and/or Pederson.
But one would think the past decade has prepared him to have his own strong opinion.

I posted after that January State of the Jaguars report I felt he is beginning to have his own opinion. That bigger and stronger came from him.  Let's face it in 2023 it was on display those last games.  During the 49ers home game you could see it on his face. He also made a few other remarks like "I expect to win" putting people on notice. they can sell him on some things, but they better now deliver....  Maybe after 10 years it is more like he has watched and knows what he doesn't like. Who knows just an opinion.
A new broom always sweeps clean.

  • Need a good Strong Safety - might need a FS too depending on how Cisco finishes the year
  • Need another corner to play opposite Tyson (Brown should compete with a new addition) Darby can walk
  • Need a new scheme and DC for the defense - Secondary is too heavily tasked in this scheme unless your are stacked with coverage talent
  • Put Lloyd on the trade block - Miller and Oluokun are your starters at ILB when in nickel
  • Need a new RG
  • Need to make a decision at LT
  • Upgrade the Z receiver - Davis a'int it
  • Need a staff that can find a way to work all the stupid mistakes out of this offense
I agree with all of this, but I do think it’s a lot to fix in one offseason and there are some areas we can address that can make up for some of the others.

For example on d… better DC, and  if we can get a very good DT to collapse the pocket , and some serviceable depth behind our d front this offseason, then walker and Allen become better players even if we can only address one of the holes in the secondary and our front seven becomes a big problem for teams.

And on o if we keep Engram and Kirk and fix RG become more physical and resign little.. then we can live with Davis until a better more affordable option comes along.

But I would def kick Darby and Davis to the curb if possible.

It is a lot to fix in one offseason, and the coaching/F.O. changes are the most daunting in my opinion.

The player personnel stuff is very doable IMO.

The Jags are projected to have 59 million in cap space next year before unloading anyone, and they have 9 picks including two selections in the third round and two selections in the fourth.

They can definitely shore up that secondary, add a Z receiver and land a RG with that kind of capital.

For me, the real waiting game right now is just all about whether or not Khan cleans house or lets the Baalke/Pederson braintrust have another go at it. And I think that boils down to how many more embarrassing blowouts take place and how far away from sniffing a wildcard berth they end up.
