We know that they use it to say that they’re out of something and bars use it when they say they’re going to toss somebody out of the bar, but the term is much older than the depression era as Wikipedia and others are claiming.
One explanation they tried to come up with is that during the depression in the soup kitchens, a standard soup pot held 85 cups, so if you were number 86 you were out of luck. But again the term is older than that. Restaurants and bars picked up the terminology and adopted it within their “lingo“ but the numbers have a meaning and that is the standard grave is approximately 8 feet long and 6 feet deep.
To say you’re going to 86 somebody is much different than saying an item on the menu is 86. As Paul Harvey would say, “now you know the rest of the story.“
