Most competitive roster position
|
There are several positions going into this season which will have tough competition for a roster spot. However, the one that really stands out to me is cornerback. Campbell, Darby,
Jones and Savage (nickel) should be locks to make the team. The list of possible players who will make the roster for cornerback depth is long including the following: Montaric Brown Tre Flowers Christian Braswell Erick Hallett Greg Junior De'Antre Prince Tevaughn Campbell That make 7 players vying for 2 spots at the most. I expect a very spirited competition, with the hope that a couple of the young players will clearly emerge as not only roster locks but as potential future starters. Ideally, that would be Braswell, Hallett or Junior who would show big jumps from year 1 or the rookie Prince. If none of those youngsters earn the coaches confidence in the pre-season, I'd expect Flowers or Brown to make the team due to their experience. I think the interior of the defensive line should be much, much better than last year's outing. Between Armstead's addition, Hamilton back from injury, Smith and Jefferson added from this year's draft class along with Ledbetter. It should make for an interesting line-up and rotation this pre season.
I think other guys like Lacy, Robertson-Harris and Gotsis could make for some interesting, interchangeable players playing inside or from the edge in this base look as well. The defense in general is going to be the more exciting group to watch. Like you said, between the secondary and the lineman it should have some healthy competitions all summer. On offense, it's really just the back end of the WR room and seeing where Hodges, Fortner, Little and Foster end up on the depth chart along the offensive line. If Hodges is getting work and looks in at Center? I would like to see Fortner getting some work in at RG to relieve Scherff if needed and then you have Foster with his swing tackle ability potentially challenging Little for his job and then some. Walker Little needs to do something this summer and pre season. Still disappointed this team has had not enough faith in him to move on from Cam Robinson at LT or to even spare this team from having to draft Anton Harrison at RT just a year ago when Taylor left for Kansas City. He's easily been the most disappointing selection of Meyer/Baalke's draft classes so far in my opinion. 45th overall selection in the 2021 draft with just 17 career starts. Not good. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. I do believe that it will take time for Maason Smith to become a big factor due to his limited playing time and injury while at LSU. Jefferson should become a very good nose tackle and the combination of Armstead, Hamilton, Jefferson and Smith has the potential to be very disruptive enabling Allen, Walker and Gipson to thrive as pass rushers in whatever schemes Ryan Nielsen comes up with. This year I am assuming due to our new DC we will need to change our though processes a bit. If you look at the Falcons initial 53 man roster they do not list CB's and Safeties. In fact take a look they have 3 position groups, LB(8), DL(7) and DB(10). As for competitiveness, this may be one of the most competitive training camp in years. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=atlanta+falcon...ext&ia=web
A new broom always sweeps clean.
CB and DL will both be the most competitive, but DL will also be the deepest. All of a sudden we have a lot of talent on the defensive line, and we will be letting some guys go that will wind up on other teams.

I wonder why that is? Because he was a Packer? The Packers let him go because he can't tackle and blows coverages on a steady basis. One pick 6 in a blowout in the playoffs doesn't cover up all the missed tackles and blown assignments. Maybe you should actually watch the games.

I was really just thinking of how many CBs we have acquired both in the draft and in free agency in the last 3 years. I'm not saying we have two superstars at CB. Just a lot of players vying for a few roster spots. Actually, unless one of them takes a big step forward, I think we'll still be in the market for a starter next year.

Personally I am hoping the offensive line is the most competitive group. We kept 10 last year. There are some locks here:
Cam Robinson - Tackle Ezra Cleveland - Guard Mitch Morse - Center Brandon Sheriff - Guard Anton Harrison - Tackle Walker Little - Tackle Javon Foster - Tackle Since it appears we have 4 locks at tackle. Sorry guys I just don't see Hance or Cole Van Lanen acing out the 4 tackles above. The competition SHOULD be in the IOL depth positions. After guard Chandler Brewer (G) went on IR, they claimed Jack Anderson (G/C) off the Colts which actually could spell Shatley's end. IOL depth contestants: Tyler Shatley - Guard/Center Luke Fortner Cooper Hodges - Guard Hance - Tackle Chandler Brewer - Guard Darryl Williams - Guard Jack Anderson - Guard/Center Cole Van Lanen - Tackle Keaton Sutherland - Guard Steven Jones - Guard Yea, I know I have Shatley, Forther and Hodges in this group. None are locks. These guys are fighting for 3 spots on the 53 unless we trade someone from the 7 locks.

If they choose to resign him, I think Little is the odd man out, with Foster becoming the swing tackle. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk ![]() Fix the O-Line!

The competition is hopefully good this summer with the IOL group. They simply have to play better as a unit and they have to start pushing forward more in the running game. It's an absolute necessity this year for the ground game to be on the plus side of things and not in the negative as much as they were last year. The inability to pick-up chump change when needed on the ground cost us game after game after game last season. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I think Hodges wins his spot as a utility backup and is given a chance to compete for RG next year.
Respect the game. Play with a sense of urgency.
1.) Take care of the ball. Win the turnover battle. 2.) It's all about 3rd down. Win on 3rd down to win the game. 3.) Playmakers make plays. The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays. Learn from the great collapse of 2023. There are some locks here:Offensive line is right there with cornerback for most competitive roster positions. Although Baalke and Pederson have given no indication of trading Cam, I wouldn't totally rule it out. If Little has a very solid pre-season and they like what they see in Foster, they would have to consider trade offers from other teams. I could definitely see the Jaguars being enticed to deal Cam if they could receive a 3rd rounder in return. As far as the other spots, it will be fun to watch. As is the case with the cornerbacks, my hope would be that the " youngsters" like Hodges and Jones have great pre-seasons and make the 53 man roster. While many are high on Hodges, we still need to see him do it on the field. Jones is likely to need a lot of development, but he could earn a spot on the team rather than risk losing him if placed on the practice squad.
I can't see Cam Robinson as a potential trade candidate. Not unless Walker Little just absolutely crushes everybody in front of him this summer and makes a strong case to be the clear cut LT1. Robinson offers a grittiness and attitude to this group that we lack virtually down the line.
With the exception of maybe Morse. I have hopes with Morse being a 10 year veteran and coming down from Buffalo where he was used to slugging it out for tough yardage. In a perfect world though, Little establishes himself, he becomes LT1 as a former 2nd RD pick going into contract extensions, and Robinson is traded along with his stupidly high cap percentage. But, I just don't see it personally. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky.
