Quote:Remember he could not beat out Michael Sam. One year wonder at Missouri.

I dont think thats a fair assessment.  First of all Sam was a really good college player that led the SEC in sacks and TFL his senior season.  And I believe was an all conference player.  So its not as though Ray couldnt beat out a scrub.  He was an underclassmen not starting ahead of a senior who was the best pass rusher in the SEC.  Even as a backup though, his numbers in 2013 were basically on par with Fowler's who was a starter.  And then as a starter in 2014 Ray became the best pass rusher in the conference.

Ray has basically everything you want except for the size.  Great production.  Super athletic.  A lot of hustle and energy.  But the only downside is the size.  6'3 and 245.  Not tiny but ideally when drafting up that high, you'd want a DE closer to 6'5 260.

So do you take the lesser player in Fowler who may have slightly better size(although he is only 6'2 so its not like he doesnt have his own concerns) or do you go with the better player and better athlete in Ray?  Or neither because they both have limitations.

Personally I'd have no problem with Ray at 3.  He may not be as versatile along the line the way a guy like Leonad Williams.  But as a pure pass rusher, there may not be a better one in the draft.

*caveat... I have no idea if any of these guys are total headcases in which case my opinion would change.
Quote:Would this be a reach at 3? He's probably the best pass rusher who isn't Williams.
no not a reach, he plays hard every play, puts up great numbers and has the size that fits the LEO

Quote:How is he overhyped? He has been an ultraproductive player at Missouri. And is an elite athlete.
Ray is not an elite athlete whatsoever. As I said earlier, he has a nice first step but after that he is wholly underwhelming athletically.

Thanks. I will keep that in mind.
Yes, it would be a reach.

However, everybody in here would have said the same thing about Bortles at 3 a year ago..

? What makes you think this? Dude is a freak athlete and has the things you cant teach.  I think he lights it up at the combine.

He is said to run a 4.44 in the 40, has a vertical jump of 42 inches and bench-presses 430 pounds.  Not bad IMO

What I find funny is that the nfl.com draft tracker has Chris Clemons as an NFL comparison for Shane Ray.

Dwight Freeney?

He reminds me of Shawn Merriman

you need to write "IMO" more often.  Your matter-of-fact tone comes off as very arrogant.

I've seen multiple NFL scouts describe him as very athletic and even freakish in some regards.

You watch 10 minutes worth of youtube highlights and suddenly have it all figured out.

You gotta figure with YouTube out there, the scouts really have to have a lot note free time than say like ten years ago.

Ten minutes of highlights and they can move on....

Out of the NFL player and never played a down.

That post was just a preview of the next few months for that wannabe draft expert.

We will see I guess, I'd be shocked if he posted anything near 4.4s and 40+. I was talking about functional athleticism, though. If he really does have that athleticism it doesn't translate to the field well, except for that first step.

If all I did was watch 10 minutes of YT highlights then I probably would come out of it thinking he deserved to be a dark horse #3 pick candidate.

But instead I went and watched about the full hour of all 5 of his cutups on draftbreakdown.com and the bigger picture came into focus.
