I'm not leaving the Ray bandwagon just yet. I know his 40 was much slower than expected, but they did say he did well in all the position drills, and I sense he's not quite over his injury. He also said he added a bit of weight per suggestions that he bulk himself up, and that he still felt explosive at the higher weight despite the 40-time. Per his tape, virtually every scout felt that he'd blow away all the competition in the 40 which is why this is such a surprise. I bet if he were to run again in a month, he'd do that much. I still think the Falcons are eyeing him at #7.

What's impressive is how fast he gets to the qb in over half of these sacks, and in the rest how he's zeroes in like a heat-seeking missile leaving the qb no escape. In a few of these he had no problem beating double teams.

4th and 3, 4th Q, 28-10 Mizzou lead
2nd and long, 3rd Q, 28-0 Mizzou lead
4th and 8, 3rd Q, 14-3 Mizzou lead
4th and 7, :30 seconds left, 20-10 lead
Those were the only 4 outside sacks he had all season. All late in the game, all with a 2+ score lead, 3 of them on 4th down. He didn't have a single exterior sack on a snap that wasn't an extreme passing situation. The rest of his sacks were interior rushes and inside counter moves. Bulk him up a bit more and make him Ryan Davis 2.0.

Still we're talking about 12 sacks on the season. Compare this to the other top names...
1. Shane Ray - 12 sacks
1. Vic Beasley - 12 sacks
3. Dante Fowler Jr - 8 1/2 sacks
4. Alvin Dupree - 7 1/2 sacks
5. Randy Gregory - 7 sacks
5. Leanard Williams - 7 sacks

To be fair, the same can be said of Dante fowler. 3 of his 8 sacks came against ECU

That's a lot of speculation and conjecture.
I personally don't care that he "felt" explosive - the fact is he wasn't explosive in an objective way.
He's lost his explosion for whatever reason: maybe injury maybe because he's "bigger" at 249 lbs.
Compare that to Beasley who bulked up to the same weight and blew out the competition in every drill. You match that up to his tape and it makes sense. You KNOW he will be explosive at the next level.
With Ray, you just don't know. I say he will go in the late 1st round.

Classic case of the ol pre draft over analyzing. He's always coming off blocks or splitting double teams and pushing through. Doesn't give up on plays....
I think he would be a really good LEO
Quote:Lol @people who thought he would run a 4.4
Or the 42 vert...came in at 33..3 inches more than 339 DT Shelton
Pro days like the combine are a small piece of the puzzle, I doubt teams are scratching him off because of his pro day. It's not like he went out there and blew it.

Nobody is saying he'll go Undrafted, but he's not an elite pass rushing prospect.he doesn't have the size, the length, or the athleticism of an elite prospect.

It depends on your scheme, measurable wise he fits in a lot of schemes perfectly.
As far as athleticism watch the games to get a more accurate gauge of what you'd get on game day instead of a pro day where he seemed to be favoring his right foot some.
I think the Jags interest in Shane Ray only comes into play in a trade down scenario with perhaps the Saints or the Browns where I believe Shane Ray will fall. The Jags have interest in Trae Waynes - CB - Michigan for the very same reason, based upon a trade scenario which another team has brought to the table for the Jags consideration should the circumstances work out to make the trade viable.

But LEO's have to win on the edge, and Ray doesn't win on the edge.
Beasley also had 12 sacks, and was double teamed more than Ray (or anyone else in the country that I have seen), and doesn't give up on plays...and has the most impressive athletic skill set we have seen for a pass rusher since JJ Watt. Whereas Ray's is literally the worst I have ever seen for anyone remotely his size.
Quote:I just don't even know how to process a spider chart like this. This is UDFA level athleticism. I know that I am piling on, I am just terrified that one way or another we wind up with him.

I think everybody predicted that his athleticism was far from elite. But what does surprise me is his 10 yard split. I thought he had one of the quickest jumps and first step in the class.
I think we are down to two prospects in Fowler and Gregory.

As I said earlier in this thread I believe, his 'quickest jumps and first step' was really just decent first step combined with good passing down snap anticipation...think along the lines of Dee Ford.
Don't count out Beasley either. If Dave sees Von Miller like so many of us other people do he would be a fantastic pick. If I were picking it would be between 'Vic Miller' and Gregory, with Beasley in the lead slightly. Fowler a distant but not terrible 3rd.
Beasley imo falls short purely as a football player compared to Fowler and Gregory. To me he looks lost and lacks the instincts of the other two. He also cannot set the edge and is a complete non-factor in the run game.
I also like how violent Gregory and Fowler are when they are not just hitting the QB. With them, nobody is safe and I love it.

No frigging way we take Ray unless we take an eagle level trade back to the 20s and Dupree and all other leo prospects are gone...even then I'd take Preston Smith.
Can you do//provide a Preston Smith spider chart?

Yep, Preston Smith is a great athlete. He doesn't quite show his exceptional athleticism when I've watched him, but I also don't think he was being used to maximize it either.
