When I was in the service, there was a guy on my ship named Duane Alvens. Now Alvens had a big head - literally - and male pattern baldness which made his head seem even bigger. Now on the ship, they would play movies for us via Closed Circuit TV, and one of the movies they would show was So I Married An Axe Murderer. For those who haven't seen it or have simply forgotten, Mike Myers plays an older Scottish dad who has a young son. The son had a big head as well and a bit in the movie was his dad making fun of him. I attached a YouTube video of the clip.

So "Heed" was a pretty natural nickname for Alvens, and a lot of people thought it was funny. Thing was, Alvens didn't like it. He didn't like it so much that he would tell people that he didn't like it. And he wouldn't get over it either. He would fight it and all that would do was make people use it more. At one point, he pretty much screamed "my name is not Heed!!! It's Petty Officer Alvens!!!" Turned out, that was the worst thing he could have done because now that's all people would call him.

 

Nicknames are very funny things. You can never give yourself your own, and the only way to get rid of one that's stuck is to flat out ignore it.

 

J-dub is your nickname and that's really a good thing. It's a term of endearment whether you want to recognize it or not.

Maybe until I start my annual hiatus from the board, which usually runs from May to August. Then I would post under a different username during the 2015 preseason.

 

But for right now, I plan to change it before the draft to give people time to get used to calling me something else before the 2015 season starts.

Deacon, I don't believe Jdub is a term of endearment because when people use it, I get mad. How can it be a term of endearment if it does not make me happy? In your example, Heed looks to me like people were teasing Alvens for looking old and ugly. That is the exact opposite of what terms of endearment are used for - to raise a person's self esteem. If you want to give me a nickname for that purpose, make it one that represents a good trait like I did for my cat.

A term of endearment isn't always trying to make people happy, but regardless of the intent of when it is used, it indicates familiarity, a sense of trust, and a sense of history. The fact that people give you a nickname means that you are now "more" than just Andrea or JaguarsWoman or anything else. People have history with you and they have knowledge of you. That's what the nickname indicates.

 

People are not necessarily trying to make you feel happy when they call you J-dub, they are trying to show you that they know you and acknowledge the history that the two of you have.

Whether you believe it or not, it is a term of endearment.  It's not insulting or meant to demean you, so I'm not sure why you are so offended by it.  Nicknames happen to pretty much everyone, and in this case you are no different.  Embrace it and learn to like it...its a good thing.

The problem is having a long history of being picked on. If you know I don't like something and do it anyway, I interpret that as malicious teasing because I had to put up with that crap when I was a kid.

Nobody is picking on you with it...the only reason they push it further than they do now is because you lose it on people every time they say it.  If you can let it go and not say a word, it wont be such a big deal.

Originally it wasn't. I get that  What I don't get is how continuing to call me that knowing I hate it is not an attempt to make me mad. Go back several pages for the "what's wrong with it" explanation.

I'm telling you to let it go...if you dont make it a big deal, nobody else will.  People are never going to stop saying it....so you either have to get used to it, or take that hiatus (which nobody wants you to do )

I was hoping someone could at least answer my question even if they never stop calling me Jdub. Apparently I will never get that answer because 12 pages later I still don't have it.

 

I am used to it. That is not the problem. The problem is inability to understand why people think doing something they know I hate is an attempt to make me happy. It does not make sense.

Why do little kids have nicknames from their parents or friends?  It just happens.

Like I said, making up a nickname is fine. I don't care about that. My only issue is people continuing to call me a name they know I hate because unlike Andrea, it is changeable.

what if someone comes up with a nickname on your new name?  Are you going to change that name too?

Forgive me for being a little bit pop-psychology here, the problem is that accepting nicknames given is a common prerequisite for acceptance into the group. You can't pick your own nickname and by rejecting the nickname given that's what you're trying to do.

 

People are often nice and sensitive but only when you stay within what they consider acceptable behavior. Rejecting a non-vulgar nickname is not considered acceptable in most groups. And trying to causes the reaction that you're seeing; insistent use of the nickname.
