It's the fact that Gus was one of the most stubborn coaches I've ever seen.
Clearly the phrases "Just compete" and "Do your job" weren't working but he kept using them. They weren't hitting home with the players but he used it anyway. He never ran a defense that fit the players he had. He rarely held players accountable and by all accounts was very lazy in disciplining players.
So yes, saying "Just compete" might work for a little while with young players and a non talented team but in 2015 (playing against god awful QBs and teams) and in 2016, he should have made winning at all costs his #1 priority. He didn't.

The job was too big for the man. He didn't win with the coaches meetings. He didn't win with the game planning. He didn't win with the practices. So he failed on the field. When you have a static head coach that can't adjust, adapt or be creative with the position you get a flat line of development.
The fact we got more competitive was all about the improvements in the roster and had nothing to do with the coaching. Irony is retaining Murlarkey would have produced better results.

I dont understand what's so hard to grasp. There's nothing wrong with the word compete or even the phrase "just get better"... but under Gus Bradley, they basically became euphemisms. He explicitly decided not to use the W word for the first two years and built a culture where winning at all costs wasn't stressed - but "competing" and "getting better" was.
Guess what Gus? Other teams are getting better too. Other teams are competing. Competing and getting better every day isn't enough - you gotta win.

Did Arizona improve and get better? No, they did not. Mainly at the QB spot, where Palmer regressed. Did our QB improve and get better? No, he did not. Did our running game improve? No, it did not. In fact it probably regressed.
You can keep saying "Just win baby!", but if you sit on your chair and not do something to push yourself and improve, guess what...you're not going to win.
