Gus can't tell Caldwell...ummm naw I'm straight? I would never play Gerhart.

After watching Slowby fail all four times with one yard to go, I can't help but wonder why the Jaguars still have him on the roster?
and for that matter why keep Brandon Peirce?
BP 6 runs for 11 yards 1.8 avg,
Toby Gerhart 20 attempts for 44 yards, 2.2 average... and he can't even get in on the goalline...
The Offensive line isnt bad at blocking for the run, PFF ranked them 4thin the league at run blocking (but 28th at pass blocking), so why is it that Toby couldn't go one yard after four tries between Cann & Parnell?
BP with the head injury and blocking when he should be tackling... i dont see the point of him either.. let them both go and free up roster spots for the practice squad to move up.
what do you all think about these two players?

I don't know who Brandon Peirce is, but Bernard Pierce sticks around because he's cheap veteran depth that can do a little bit of everything in the backfield and, when he's not blocking for the wrong team, contribute on kick coverage.
Slowby had this mysterious "hybrid H-back" role talked up for him in the offseason, but part of me wonders if that was just talk on the part of Caldwell and the coaching staff to explain how their prize free agent stinker from the year before wasn't a complete waste of time and money. His salary alone guarantees that he'll stick the rest of the year.

Watching Toby Gerhart fail to get into the endzone 4 straight times was one of the worst things I've seen this season.
First off, Gerhart seriously needs to be deactivated.
Secondly, there are a million safe ways to get into the endzone from the 1 yard line. Why try the SAME EXACT WAY FOUR TIMES IN A ROW WITH THE SAME EXACT PLAYER AND FAIL NEARLY THE SAME EXACT WAY ALL FOUR TIMES? At what point do you trust your bell cow back to punch it in rather than handing it to this situational player who has clearly proven in the past that he can barely move the ball two yards without being stone walled?
Holy hell.

Agreed...
Those four plays at the goalline were so hard to watch!

I mean if for money reasons they dont want to cut Slowby fine... but why give him the ball all four times at the goalline..
are they thinking he's better than he is?
because he's not!

Quote:I mean if for money reasons they dont want to cut Slowby fine... but why give him the ball all four times at the goalline..Gus said last week that he had a package of plays designed for Grant to run, and I suspect that he has a goal-line package of plays for Toby to run, regardless of who common sense dictates we should be playing.

Everyone seems to have one guy they want to cut. But really, is there some guy out there on the street who is better than the guy you want to cut? How does it improve the team to cut a player if there isn't a replacement waiting in the wings who is better?

toby should be cut today

Holy Hell sounds right. I am still wringing my head about this. The weirdest, most sinister goal line series in my 20-year Jags watching history. I had the pleasure of flying into Jacksonville to start college on January 2, 1997. Saw the first and great 96 playoffs run. That's how I became engulfed into all things Jaguar. Justifiably! That was a head scratching series. Blake could have walked in untouched around the corner twice and back. Yeldon, not good enough? Simply bizarre.

Don't you USE YOUR BEST PLAYERS TO SCORE? Olsen deserves an inquistion

He would help the team more if he was off the team.

He isnt horrible at screen passes but TJ Yeldon & Robinson are better...
for the money they paid Toby its just sad really

Toby's strength as a runner has been his ability to create some push after contact. However, they stonewalled him yesterday. His vision to adjust his running lane was atrocious.

the following players need to be cut:
TOBY
SERGIO
BEADLES
CYPRIEN
all Dave Caldwell busts

You guys really need to re-watch that goal line stand (and even the failed conversion with Tyson). The playcalling gave Toby no favors, but the OL allowed penetration. We know who Toby is by now. If he can get his feet moving, his momentum carries him forward for positive yardage. He had several runs early in the game where he simply carried defenders forward after getting past the line of scrimmage.
You need to have a stout interior play if you plan on running 4 straight times against a defense in that situation. Now, I'm not going to disagree that TJ should have gotten carries. There was one play (2nd down IIRC) that a more agile back (and with vision, which is TJ) might have been able to bounce the ball outside rather than trying to plow through against the defensive penetration inside.
All I'm saying is...
A) should not have been put in that position
B) at least not 4x
C) OL needs to improve
Whoever is making decisions on the RB rotation (I'm guessing this is dictated by the RB coach or the OC's playcall), they need to re-evaluate their stuff over the bye week. This is the 4th time they have pulled something like this this season (Toby vs. Indy when he came in cold on a big short yardage play), Grant and his fumble, goal line vs Bills, and Tyson vs. Bills.

I think that a part of the failure to get into the endzone on that one drive should fall on olsen. Calling a run up the middle four times in a row from the same guy...that was the best play calling olsen could manage? It's becoming more obvious why olsen hasn't stayed with any team as a coach for very long.
This isn't to say that Gerhart wasn't at fault though. The only tangible excuse for this guy to be here is his supposed ability to grind out 1-2 yards when needed. He failed the test when it mattered miserably. It's true he isn't the most expensive running back around... but spending any money on a back who fails to do what they were primarily hired for is a waste of money and a waste of a roster spot. Cut'em.

Quote:Are you crazy?? He's a short yard back! He's got to get one yard in 4Are you as stupid as you look? If another team has a pretty good guess at exactly who is going to be getting the ball and where it's going it wouldn't matter if you tried to run a bull through there! Good grief, what a moron...
tries!!!! It's his one job!
I suggest you try to 're-channel' some of that unreasoning ignorance you're displaying with your comment you directed at me and consider the OC as a major contributor to that failed scoring attempt. Four exact same plays in a row by the same guy? Sure...
