Quote:Gus had some perspective on Bortles when asked at the Sat. presser.
(paraphrased) He's right where we expected. His poise was great. He made good decisions but had 2 mental errors. (he alluded to a check at the L.O.S.)
meaning where he checked down as opposed to hitting the open receiver downfield, or meaning he should have checked down rather than throw it to someone covered?

I think he made an incorrect check at the line before the snap. Audibled to a run or something. Just a guess tho.

ok, thanks. I was interpreting it post snap.

Yep. That's what it sounded like.

I'm guessing it was a play early on. He made a check at the Los and Storm got ate up in the backfield.
Can anyone more familiar (and that has a better eye for these things than me) tell me how different Blake's mechanics/footwork looked last night versus what he did in college?
I don't know what Gus and crew planned on changing.

He didn't throw off of his back foot as much. More spin on the ball on some of the passes.
If he progresses the rest of preseason his production would be so far ahead of Henne's that if he isn't starting I think the fans may riot.

Yes, but I'm expecting a step back in the next game. Careers don't just start up and go to the moon. I expect some ups and downs.

. This... But I would be stoaked if he came out and lit up the Bears.
This is making me so happy.
This is the type of QB debate we've been missing for so long.
Start Bortles, kid is tough as nails!
Quote:You really don't get it at all, if all you think it's about is "just because."
Caldrac nailed it.
It has absolutely nothing to do with who you think is better.
He's simply not consistent as they'd like him to be yet. Only when he gets there, will it even become a talking point. But it hasn't even gotten to that point yet, and the plan is still for next year. Sorry if that disappoints you, but that's the situation.
And Henne is as consistent as they'd like him? This notion that the best way to develop a player is by not allowing him to play the game in which we are trying to develop him in is, to me, ridiculous. Sure, he can work on his footwork and all that on a weekly basis to make his mechanics more consistent, but I don't get this myth that actually playing and developing is not possible. How does he become more consistent by holding a clip board on Sundays? And even more importantly, how does it make sense to sit him when he already gives the team the best chance to win?
All I'm saying is, if he markedly outperforms Henne in the preseason, I don't see why he shouldn't be starting. If he doesn't, sure, sit him until he's the better player. But if Friday was any indication, it won't be long at all until he's obviously the better player.

Bortles forgot the route combination on one of the play calls from Fisch. Rather than panicking and calling a timeout like most rookies would, he improvised and called his own play. That was the comeback route on the sidelines that he hit to Mike Brown I think?
Very impressive in my opinion. Not many rookies would have the poise to improvise like that and actually end up running a successful play.

Actually it shouldn't even be a debate at the position. Stevie Wonder can see who's the best qb and it isn't even close. This is the oddest coaching decision I've seen in a minute. They're talking down what he's doing on the field to protect their Henne is the starter stance. Which was dumb to give to him before camp started anyway.

I think it's more likely that the "Henne is the starter" talk was designed to protect the kid from unnecessary pressure/nerves/anxiety.
All of which he seems capable of shouldering anyway. I still think it's the smart position to take at this point. There's no harm if they reverse their stance in week 3 or 4 - or next week for that matter. Henne knows his days at the helm are numbered. Conversely - harm could be done if they told everyone they expect the kid to start and he's just not ready.
Also -- The reality of the situation is that Bortles still has a lot to learn about the playbook, reading NFL defenses and correcting his mechanics. It really could be good for him to sit part of the regular season. I really doubt we'll see Henne play 16 games this year - but I wouldn't be surprised to see him play a few early on.

Here is Bradley's answer regarding Bortles mental errors. (one of which was the check at the L.O.S.)
"He had a check at the line of scrimmage," Bradley said. "He got us into another play and he forgot a play. In the huddle, he forgot a route combination so he changed the play to another one. He had the poise to get us in another one and it was actually complete to
Mike Brown on their sideline. That was it, not too many."

I think that would go down in my book as a positive, personally.

LOS checks (pre-snap checks) are not the same as checkdowns in pass progression reads.
But then, I didn't expect Rain Dog to understand the difference.

I do know the difference. I misunderstood what exactly he was saying initially. But typical you all you do is chuck personal insults around.
