Quote:So what's the point in not creating an offense that dosent involve him, say his situation is a "tragedy", yet still keep him on the team even though he isnt costing them money, or a roster spot. What's the point?
He's a receiver. They don't have to build an offense around him. If he's on the roster, rest assured it will involve him.
What's the point? Because when/if he returns to the roster, he is the best receiver on the team.
Quote:While theres still a chance that he makes it back, you keep him. No harm is done.
The upside is too great to just cut loose.
The Jags would be fools to just cut him loose before anything such as a lifetime NFL ban.
Why give an apponent the opportunity to get a player with that level of upside for free?
Yup.

The risk is if you install him into the offense, things could be going good then all of a sudden the team is once again blindsided with his now permanent ban from the league.
At this point the risk is greater than the reward.

This is a what have you done for me lately league. If we get solid production out of Robinson, Lee and Shorts Blackmon is irrelevant.
It wont be the end of the world if the team cuts him and is successful without Blackmon.

Blackmon and his abilities trump anything Robinson, Lee, or Shorts bring to the table.
The team isn't going to cut him any time soon.
You say the risk is greater than the reward. Why? Right now there's zero risk and only reward if he comes back and becomes productive. The team will have to make the determination as to what they anticipate he will don if he's reinstated. They clearly are keeping their options open at this point, so I'm again not sure why it is you think this is something they must do? What's the rush exactly?
why the hell cut him if you can just put him as the 4th receiver if you want to?
why in the world would you give the rest of the league the chance to sign him?
makes absolutely NO sense.

Maybe to you or me. But, there are some here who are very concerned that we're playing favorites here...with arguably the most talented receiver this franchise has had on the roster since Jimmy Smith. Of course, it was okay to give Jimmy an opportunity to redeem himself. But Blackmon? Nope. No way.

So only watching Blackmon play in less than a dozen of games makes him the most talented receiver since Jimmy Smith all of a sudden?

yes, he showed in a couple of games more than all of our other receivers did in years.

Can we give Lee and Robinson a chance to prove themselves before we write them off while still hanging onto the stale prayer of Blackmon coming back?
Im not urging the team to cut Blackmon, I just dont understand the point of keeping him around. Its obvious that you, and others are paranoid about him being cut, sign with another team and have success.
Seriously though. I realize that it's June, but why are so many people obsessed with Justin Blackmon? He's not part of "the plan" right now. The team is moving on and doing things based on him not being in the NFL. IF and only IF he gets reinstated by the NFL, I trust that the coaching staff and front office staff will make the proper evaluation and decide if they are willing to give him a chance.
I personally wouldn't be so quick to take the risk of signing him to a deal. Even IF he get's reinstated by the NFL, one more "mess up" or one more "mis-understanding" means that he is gone for good. IF he gets reinstated, I would probably shop him and take the risk that he may end up on a team that can hurt us.

I'm pretty sure Lee and Robinson are getting their chance regardless of what's happening with Blackmon unless I've missed something here.
The point of keeping him around is simple. If he can get his life back on track, he makes this team better. It isn't any deeper than that. I'm not paranoid he'll end up elsewhere because the team isn't going to cut him loose if he can contribute. The only scenario where I see them moving on is if it's crystal clear he will never get things back on the right path. At that point, there's no reason to continue the process.
By the way, let me be clear. I don't advocate just cutting him, but I would be open to getting some kind of trade deal for him.

You're not going to find a trade partner for a guy who is a drink away from another indefinite suspension if and when he's reinstated.

Nah,....The Browns couldn't even find a trade partner for Josh Gordon
last offseason, before his latest infraction (which puts him more even with Blackmon as far as the penalties go)....
The Jags are best off just handling it as they are.

I may be mistaken, but IF he is reinstated he is only a drink away from a permanent lifetime ban. My point is why take the risk to sign somebody like that? If you can't sign him and can't trade him, then what?

He is already signed by us.

We pretty much just gotta live with the results. Good or bad.
Quote:He is already signed by us.
However, the initial contract that he signed with us is pretty much done. He would have to get a new contract. How do you structure such a contract?

There's no permanent ban from football. What he's dealing with now is as bad as it gets. Now, that doesn't mean that he can't be banned simply by denying his requests for reinstatement, but there are offenders with far more serious issues on their record who have been allowed to return.
The team took the risk because the initial incident didn't indicate it was going to become something more serious. We're in a different place now. For the Jags, he's still under contract, and will continue to be in that state until such time as he either retires or they release him. Otherwise, everything is basically on hold. The concern about another suspension is going to assure that there isn't a team out there willing to trade anything for him. They might be willing to take a flyer on the guy if he's released, but they're not going to put up anything of value to trade for him.
The "then what" scenario here is what it is. He's suspended. If he is reinstated, he'll do so as a Jaguar. I think the team has taken the proper approach here. Whether he can shake his demons or not is completely up to him. At this point, if he comes back and violates again, there won't need to be a lifetime ban. No team will touch him. Fortunately, with the contract structured the way that it is, the team has some protections in the event that happens.

Yep, he either plays football in the NFL as a Jaguar, or he doesn't play NFL football.
Thats it, and that pretty much how it should be.

The same way they did the first one with contingencies on bonus money.
