When I saw him at training camp last year, I was appalled.  No reason an NFL running back should look like that, ever.

 

He was flat-out fat.  Not slightly overweight, or "out of shape" he looked like he has his foot in the air while eating Dominos Pizza every day.

 

I know you had a broken foot, but there are ways to stay in shape.  Ride the bike, a lot... when the foot gets a little better get in the pool.  Eat better...  

 

If you were the Jags, and you just witness your running back injured for 1 year, and then fat/ineffective for the next year, would YOU re-sign him?  Don't think so.

Acting like we work for the team? I wouldn't say that at all. More like just being a fan, if the Jags lose we feel that pain and when they win we revel in those.

When someone takes a shot it annoys and when someone offers praise we enjoy. It's a fundamental part of fandom.

Yeah, he could have remained in Jacksonville to work with the training staff to maintain his physical conditioning at a higher level than he did.  In the latest attempt to play the victim, he even said he showed up out of shape after the foot injury, and somehow tried to twist it like the team had the audacity to show no loyalty to him because of that.  He fails to recognize he didn't really show the team much respect by showing up fat.  He never shed the extra lbs and played heavy last season. He clearly had lost a step.  I'm not sure what he was expecting here, but he's not a dumb guy.  He had to realize this could jeopardize his time in Jax.

I always got bashed for suggesting we trade MJD for something while he still had some tread on those fat tires.

 

He seems to be hanging his fat hat on that rushing title in 2011. Rushing titles are irrelevant these days because they seldom coincide with a teams actual win-loss record. If a QB has 30 passing TD's, you can bet the farm his team probably made the playoffs. If a guy rushes for 2100 yards, there is no guarantee that his team even won 7 games.

I would be curious to know what, if anything the Jags did discuss with MJD as far as a contract. I know he ended up signing for a lot less than he anticipated his value would be. Seems to me that Caldwell would have let him know a ballpark figure that they would be willing to pay him at this point in his career..

I think the Jaguars interest in keeping MJD was nothing more than lip service.  If they did have a number in mind, it was the veteran minimum and not much more considering what he ended up signing for.  The Jags could have matched or exceeded the peanuts Oakland threw his way, but they didn't.  That tells you all you need to know.

I don't think MJD had much trade value even coming off the rushing title.

The NFL is a young man's game.  MJD had 2 major injuries and he wasn't staying on top of his conditioning.  If he cared about staying in Jacksonville, at the very least he could have tried to stay in shape.  It's a two way street.

None of this should surprise anyone. MJD has been the "victim" almost his entire career. The whole 32 thing was cool the first year, but by them time it was year 3-4 and he was considered one of the top RB's in the game and being paid as a top RB's it was pathetic. He was still talking about the 32 teams passing him up, my lord get over it man.

Yeah and the guy whose girlfriend left him could have taken her out for dinner more. Emotions are not rooted in logic.

I'm not saying he isn't being an idiot, he is, but it looks to me like he's being an idiot because he has lost something he cared about. Come next year after he has played 6 mediocre games for the Raiders and quit football because he is done, he will look back on what he has said and feel really stupid.

The only thing he is mad about losing is his pride. He cant believe the team didnt want him back.

Maybe he cared.  I'd like to think that's the case.  But, his actions certainly call into question just how much he actually did care. 

 

Fred Taylor cared.  Even when he knew he'd lost a step, he did everything in his power to be sure he stayed in great shape to stave off Father Time.  MJD went to Golden Corral.
