All we need is a Good O-line-(Dave get a center and a guard Please!!!!!!!!!).  The Zone blocking scheme will help Gerhart IMO. He is a 1 cut downhill back. It obvious he runs to High. Tape does not lie. We all see that. He has to get his pad level down once he clears the line of scrimmage. Coaches will work with him on that I'm sure. In Stanford they ran a power run game with a lot of big sets, so he is used to being a workhorse. A. Luck benefitted from him being a huge run threat. I see a lot of Play Action and deep throws in our offense next yr.

lets not get crazy. no shocking is going to take place. lets keep in mind that the running game is becoming less and less and that compiled with the running back by committee approach is certainly going to take away from his overall effect. i think we could see gerhart do well on the goal line. in that respect i think gerhart is a really good addition.

Quote:2) He runs upright

You're being absurd... for points I'm not going to continue with.

As for this point, I've already explained how his running upright is different from Hillis; he's completely different from Alstott. Someone else made a better comparison in Eddie George. You're ignoring these arguments though. How convenient.
Quote:But you don't agree with the fact that is substantiated by historical data ? Nobody likes the political incorrectness of the subject matter but the odds are stacked against him. Trust me, I'm rooting for him. I'd love for him to be the next Hillis with a lot longer longevity but it's gonna be extremely hard.
No I get what your saying. But I'm not gonna knock the guy cause of ''historical Data'' on white RBs. Just skill and this case his Oline.
Quote:The dude can run, he might not be blazing fast but he can run people over.. remember a few years back 3rd and 1 3rd and 2 it was almost a given MJD would pick that up for us? I think Gerhart will add that to our offense and allow us to be more versatile in tough situations.
Does anyone have any video clips on the guy?  Is he like Clevlands Mack from back in the day?

Search Toby Gerhart on YT, I got temp banned for posting it last time -.- mods on here are too strict..
His average is 4.7 yards on 276 attempts, decent stats.

http://youtu.be/5IFSGIGp0-E  Highlights of him running.  He's like Riggo.

Quote:In my opinion, rushing yardage comes from having a good offensive line more than it comes from having a good running back.   It also depends on having a passing attack that can draw defenders away from the line of scrimmage.   In fact, I would say it takes a good defense to have a good rushing attack, because if you are always behind in games, you are going to have to pass the ball a lot more to catch up.   So it takes all 22 starters on offense and defense to have a 1,000 yard rusher.   Because if you're ahead in a game, you're going to run the ball a lot more.

So this is why Toby Gerhart doesn't thrill me just by himself.   I want to see who is going to play center and RG, and then what WRs we can get for Henne to throw to and pull people away from the line of scrimmage, and then what kind of defense we have that is going to keep the other team out of the end zone and THEN after all of that, we will hand the ball to Gerhart, and THEN AND ONLY THEN will he get 1,000 yards rushing.

This man speaks the truth.  There is more to the equation than just Toby Gerhart.

Quote:I don't know about "novelty"...but I do agree that his upright style is really going to leave him at a greater risk of injury. I would like to also add someone like a Bryce Brown as the RB2, which would be great insurance as well as being a pretty good playmaker from the position himself

LOL

Still pushing this one?

I would rather draft my own back and have him for four years on a rookie deal.
Much will depend on the effectiveness of this:

                    Joeckel - Beadles - [ Brewster/Rookie/Other] - *McClendon - Pasztor

*TBD

I actually didn't think McClendon was that bad last year after Brewster got hurt.

Still would not shock me to see them add a veteran on a one or two year deal.
There should be a lot of good guards and centers that land right in our wheelhouse in the 4th round.

Quote:I have a lot of reasons to think he won't be an every down back.

1) He's white.  That already has him going against all odds.

2) He runs upright

3) We don't have a line to open holes like the Vikes (whose opponents were beaten down by AP)

Perhaps you don't like #1 above but it's true.  Name me a white RB that was productive that carried the load for 3+ years in a row.  Once you name that RB, let me know if you would be satisfied with Gerhart producing those numbers.

best 3 consecutive years

Allstott --> 3 years  665 - 846 - 949 yards

Hillis -> 1,177 -- 587 -  309 yards
He's WHite?  Ignorant much?  Larry Czonka, John Riggins, Mike Alsott, Tom Rathman, Danny Woodhead say Hi.

I don't think he'll "shock" people, but I don't see him being "great" either. I expect him to be a somewhat consistent "3 yards and a cloud of dust" type back with an occasional breakaway every other week or so. I hope they get Robinson more involved this year out of the backfield. And don't forget, Caldwell has 11 picks at his disposal. I think he'll use one pick on a RB that he likes at some point in this draft. If a guy like Tre Mason or Lache Seastrunk is on the board in RD4. He'll probably pull the trigger on one of them.

Would be absolutely thrilled with either of those two.

Adrian Peterson and MJD called, They said you're wrong. All a running back needs is an O line that can get to the second level.  If they have that and play the run game effectively they'll never be in a position to abandon the run game.

I think you just proved my point.  The below link includes the top 250 RBs in NFL history.  Additionally, I stated effectiveness for a consecutive 3 year period.  The players you cited covered a 45 year period in the NFL ?  Like I said.... against the odds.    Thanks !!

I'm kinda sold on Gerhart but I'm yet to complete the transition. I know of his status in and coming out of college but there's an side of me that errs to caution. Replacing MJD as a every down back has to be proven. Receiving 1000+ yards has to be proven. Protecting the QB has to be proven, etc, etc... I have the faith but to say that he'll accomplish these feats is premature at best. I'm encouraged of the Todman/Gerhart duo but I'd like to see Robinson have an viable roll in the running game as well...

NH3...
I will let him prove it to me.  I am taking the wait and see approach
