Quote:I have a lot of reasons to think he won't be an every down back.

1) He's white.  That already has him going against all odds.

2) He runs upright

3) We don't have a line to open holes like the Vikes (whose opponents were beaten down by AP)

Perhaps you don't like #1 above but it's true.  Name me a white RB that was productive that carried the load for 3+ years in a row.  Once you name that RB, let me know if you would be satisfied with Gerhart producing those numbers.

best 3 consecutive years

Allstott --> 3 years  665 - 846 - 949 yards

Hillis -> 1,177 -- 587 -  309 yards

Csonka wasn't bad... But dang. Hope we don't draft Teddy. A black QB and white RB! Dooooomed!!
Quote:I think you just proved my point.  The below link includes the top 250 RBs in NFL history.  Additionally, I stated effectiveness for a consecutive 3 year period.  The players you cited covered a 45 year period in the NFL ?  Like I said.... against the odds.    Thanks !!

You should probably stop now before you get yourself hurt.  You're already making a fool of yourself.

He's been doing that for years. Doubt he stops now.

It's never to late to try?
The Sad thing is, is that there isn't any Black or White players in football or any sport for that matter. Those of us that doesn't uderstand this Seriously needs a "History Lesson 101"...

Id like to grab lache seastrunk in the fourth to compliment toby, i don't think robinson can do it. todman is capable however

HA !!   I thnk we tried a similar approach a few years ago when Matt Jones was our #1 WR.

Definitley need that change of pace.  Todman was great in college - he may be able to serve the immediate need.  4th round and beyond sounds reasonable to find a RB to compete.

And Soward. And Williams. And Porter. HA!!
Quote:In my opinion, rushing yardage comes from having a good offensive line more than it comes from having a good running back.   It also depends on having a passing attack that can draw defenders away from the line of scrimmage.   In fact, I would say it takes a good defense to have a good rushing attack, because if you are always behind in games, you are going to have to pass the ball a lot more to catch up.   So it takes all 22 starters on offense and defense to have a 1,000 yard rusher.   Because if you're ahead in a game, you're going to run the ball a lot more.

So this is why Toby Gerhart doesn't thrill me just by himself.   I want to see who is going to play center and RG, and then what WRs we can get for Henne to throw to and pull people away from the line of scrimmage, and then what kind of defense we have that is going to keep the other team out of the end zone and THEN after all of that, we will hand the ball to Gerhart, and THEN AND ONLY THEN will he get 1,000 yards rushing.
Very well thought out post here ytraM. TG had a monster year at Stanford because they had one of the best OL in the country. However, he is a very talented and a driven RB. He has tremendous inner strength and will power. Even with an avergae OL he will surprise quite a few. But, it looks like the Jags are activiely looking to beef up their OL and if they are successful (along with major improvements in passing) Toby Gerhart........provided he stays healthy, will have a terrific season. As in over 1200 yards or more running and impressive catch and run numbers too.

I get your point but stats do not lie.  I'm just stating historical facts.  I like your perspective above .... it give me hope that Steve Nash is going to win the dunk contest.

Historical facts show that Obama will never be President.
From the looks of Gerhart....I dang sure wouldn't want to tackle him.

I, for one , will be pulling for him. Toby @ 6'  231....Todman @ 5'10" 198  and Chapas @ 6'2" 244 seems llike a nice combo of different backs to throw at opponents. Pounding on them for an hour.

Why is DRob listed as a WR on the roster?

LOL... Stop It...

We all know that "White Men Can't Jump"... Steve Nash is no Spud Webb... ;-)

Silly Rabbit...

Regardless of the layered skin pigmentation, Gerhart has my support to Thrash the opposing defenders at will. If he pans out as expected nobody will be labeling him as Caucasion/White. He'll be labeled as an Jaguar...

I think Gerhart can be our version of Mike Turner.
Gerhart is a great addition to the Jaguars offense. He reminds me somewhat of Mike Alstott. Toby is a bruiser and it will take a couple if not more defenders to bring him down.
The fact that this thread went from about the potential of a person playing a position in football, to the argument that he can't play said position because he's not the right skin color shows what's still wrong with america today lol.  This thread should never have escalated to this point and quite frankly i'm kind of surprised the mods didn't get involved.

Meh, it's a "touchy" subject. Anyone of any race is capable of playing any position in any sport. That's a given. But, here is the thing, if it didn't matter, then why would this Country and these sporting organizations continously keep track of the overall demographichs? That's in a way, part of the issue. If it didn't matter, then these leauges would have a "color blind" mindset towards each and every prospect that entered their leauges.

But they don't. I see that you're in the NAVY though. And much like most sports, and we saw the term thrown out there for Richie Incognito, cant remember the player, but he was dubbed "An honorary black guy". There is actually a sense of "brotherhood" and "unity" in organized sports and military branches. So, I don't know. I grew up during the 90's, and as a teen in the 00's, I had and still have friends from ALL over the place. I truly hate to judge people. But, when I do, it's based on their actions, not the color of their skin.

If Gerhart doesn't pan-out for us at RB, it's not going to be in my mindset or thoughts to say "Oh, well, it's because he's white", it'll be "He didn't pan out because he's simply not good enough to be a starting RB in this leauge, that's why he was a 2ND RD pick in Minnesotta, and not a 1ST RD pick, and that's why he was a back-up for as long as he was wearing purple and gold". Nothing more, and nothing less.
Quote:This is how I feel. I like Gerhart I just dont think hes an everydown RB. We need another RB to pair with Gerhart.

I don't get this. He blocks well, has shown to be durable and can catch the ball out of the back field. He does exactly what you want in an every down back. Now we will just have to see if he can run effectively as one.
