Quote:Is Bradley’s replacement set to go in Jacksonville?

There is one very hot name we’ve saved because, the Way We Hear It, he might already have a job, and that’s Tampa Bay defensive coordinator and former Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith.

Sources have told us that Smith might believe the Jaguars job is his if he wants it, and that he has already begun reaching out to candidates to put a staff of assistants together.

To be clear, Jaguars owner Shad Khan has not confirmed that Gus Bradley will be fired, and we at Pro Football Weekly do not wish to play any role in promoting the loss of his job, but we have confirmed with multiple sources very close to the situation there is next to nothing Bradley can do now to save that job after going 14-47 though three seasons and 13 games.

There are multiple dots you can connect to get Smith to Jacksonville, but a number of them depend on whether Khan intends to retain general manager David Caldwell and allow him a second shot at hiring a head coach. Caldwell’s first act after getting the Jaguars GM job was to fire Mike Mularkey and hire Bradley.

According to our sources, Khan believes the Jaguars' talent is better than the record indicates and that Caldwell will get another crack at hiring a coach.

I would doubt any decision as far as a hire has been made unless they are trying to seal a deal prior to Black Monday when it is rumored that possibly up to 10 coaches could be fired making bidding wars a distinct possibility for those coaches most desired. IMO Caldwell will be retained, Bradley is already gone, some would say he was never here.

I wouldn't hate the hiring of Mike Smith. I would like someone with a proven track Record and someone that has head coaching experience. Also Smith worked wonders with a young Matt Ryan so in my head this makes sense over another hot Cordinator and I was never really sold on McDaniels. Now if we can land Coughlin in an Front office role I'd be happy

This all sounds pretty believable. Mike Smith isn't a glamorous hiring but he is a very solid option and if he can actually make the right hires with his coordinators, i believe he can be the guy to turn the team around in one offseason.

As an aside, I do not fault Caldwell for the Bradley hire. I think it was a great move at the time but where I do fault the front office is retaining him after 2 seasons and also not parting ways at any point during last season or this current one.

Gus did not develop himself or his talent. He had promise and enthusiasm that we needed but he lacks everything else you would want in a head coach.

There are so many qualifiers and disclaimers in there it's a complete non-story. If this happens and this might happen and we hear this but we're not sure and it depends on that.

I love the idea of Coughlin and the front office and like i previously said, i can get behind mike smith as head coach.

The lingering question is who would our coordinators be? Anyone know of any guys with ties to mike smith or just rumored to be available?
Make up phony story just so the writer can tell the boss I did something today to keep his job.

He was able to pull a 13-3 record with Mike Mularkey as his OC, FWIW.
Ryan is having his best ever season this year under OC Shanahan. If we're holding up Ryan's successes as reason for a particular candidate to be hired I wouldn't count out Shanahan as a front runner.

Help is likely not on the way at QB in 2017. Attempting to fix Bortles is priority #1 this offseason. I don't doubt Mike Smith is a strong candidate for the job, but my gut tells me it's going to be an offensive guy who has a history with QBs.

i like josh mcdaniels, norv turner, kyle shanahan and mike shula for what they bring to the table offensively. I am not sure the jags can afford a first time head coach again, but there is definitely talent out there, available, that we could make work.

I'm pretty sure Mark Duffner would follow Smith and be the DC. As for the OC, I have no idea. The top 3 offensive coaches under Smith - Mularkey, Robiskie, and Musgrave are either OCs or HCs already.
I feel like Mike Smith is another Gus Bradley-type. "Nice guy, bad coach."

Have to ask Falcons fans.
Dear god no
Well, that would be an uninspiring hire.
Like I can understand making him part of your list of candidates, but I have zero idea what would make him your number one choice

Was it his ability to underachieve with a high powered offense? His lack of turning around Atlanta's poor defense? His consistent bungling of clock management?

I know coordinators will obviously play a big role no matter who the next head coach is, but why put yourself behind the eight ball right away by hiring a defensive minded coach when practically all other sought after candidates are offensive minded?
This comes from Sports firms, agents, etc. Shad probably sought out an outside firm to compile a list of maybe 20-30 coaches with detailed history and experience on a weighted scale.

Mike Smith is probably on the list, but is he a serious candidate? Well Doug Pederson went from coaching high School football in NJ to NFL head coach so anything is possible at this point.

Atlanta had [BLEEP] for talent on defense. He turned around a 4-12 atlanta team into an 11-5/12-4 team his first year there. Atlanta up until the last couple years had terrible drafts. Outside of ryan, julio, and roddy they didnt have a ton. Turner broke down in those later Mike Smith years.

I like Patricia, Shanahan, and co but we went that route with Gus and look where we are. We need a veteran coach whose had success with this young yeam. Young coach+young and inexperienced team whose never had success? Not a great recipe.

MJF to appear soon to tell you why Mike Smith is the best coach ever.
Ugh...
I'm apathetic on Smith, I mean he's more promising than Bradley. And he's done good things with the Buccaneers, but his time with the Falcons wasn't exactly that fruitful in terms of advancement. Seems he hit a point with them and peaked. Only 1 playoff win in 5 appearances.

This would also be Caldwells last hire, so if he wants to put all his eggs in that basket, THIS EARLY in the actual season, then he must have a ton of confidence in him.
