I am sure most posters here already figured he was about the money. So does this statement change your feelings at all on the possibility of drafting him? I want him to to come here and be dominant, but I get the inclination that he will only be dominant in contract years. Anyway, this kind of statement just confirms to me anyway, that Clowney is all about protecting #1, and I just don't think he will play hard unless he has incentives to hit.
It may be time for me to be off the Clowney wagon, that character is just too much of a concern for me from the outside. Maybe we will get some more info later that shows otherwise, but it just sounds like he is just playing for money, which just isn't gonna get you to be a top performing DE consistently.

Are you kidding me? You don't want to draft him because he want's to get paid?
He's not getting paid if he doesn't play well. Get a clue.

Playing football is his job. Of course it's about the money.

I am saying he won't be a Hall of Fame level player if his #1 motivation is money. He will play good enough not to get cut, be awesome in contract years, and that will be it.
I don't think he will suck, but if I am looking at his upside as Reggie White, I don't think he gets there if the primary motivation is getting 'paid.' You have to want to be the best to be the best. Everything he has said the last month leads me to think more and more he just listened to ESPN pundits a bunch and does what they said he should do (i.e. not try all last season to avoid injury, saying college players should get paid), AND that he thinks he can just out-talent the NFL.
I am fine with arrogance in a football player, but you have to at least be willing to put in work, and he doesn't seem to be willing to do that from what I see. He already seems entitled just talking about the combine
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...e-combine/
' “
I hope to run a 4.4 right now,” Clowney said. “That’s my goal. On hand times, I’ve been running 4.4s. I hope I can get a 4.4 at the combine. A 4.5, I’m not too worried about.”
At last year’s Combine, the fastest time for a defensive lineman was 4.60 seconds.
Clowney scoffed at that time.
“I ain’t going to run a 4.6,” Clowney said. “I’m probably going to run low 4.5, 4.4.” '
There are a lot of players who talk, but not near as many who can play up to it. And in general, I want play over talk. Watch the video from my first post, it doesn't inspire confidence at all to me.

I agree, but he won't be a transcendant football player just for money, he will be Haynesworth, a guy who is great in a contract year, and blah every other time.
I wonder how much he thinks he would get paid if colleges were paying athletes. It obviously wouldnt be anywhere near what the NFL is giving him.

I'm glad you can see the future.

He didn't play very well last season and is expecting to get paid.
The truly great ones are motivated by the love of the game not the love of money.
Once he gets paid and the money is in his pocket, what's his motivation to put in the time and effort needed to play at the top of his abilities?
I can see this guy getting a bunch of money and deciding he can now afford to spend his time pursuing his actual interests. Too many red flags on this guy for my tastes. He reminds me too much of Albert Haynesworth.

This has been my #1 question about Clowney, and I've stated it a few times here. He'll likely have a good career, mirroring that of Peppers or Mario Williams. But given the culture and what Bradley preaches (competition, getting better every day), then I'm not sure Clowney will be a fit if what we're hearing about him is true.
They'll need to do their due diligence on him big time and see if he's a guy who's going to get paid, get complacent, then turn it on again when its time for his next contract.

Hey, that's the upside with a poor character. Not necessarily the future. I just don't think I want the Jags to draft him at 3 anymore, cause I want more than that (Haynesworth) @ that position. Bring something to the table that shows how Clowney is really a competitor, and not just all about money. He just doesn't seem like he has any desire to be the best, in fact, hes the opposite, hes the guy who already thinks he is the best before he has done anything. That's a poor work ethic, and I don't see anything out there supporting a different narrative than that.
If you have something that shows his obvious desire to compete and work hard, then bring it out. I want to see it if its there, he obviously has talent, but its no good if he won't apply it.

I think you're making a lot of assumptions
Nothing wrong with that. I'm pretty sure Fred Taylor said the same thing at one point.
lol this is stupid. Every underclassman in this draft is "about the money". Are we going to shy away from drafting any of them because of that?

How many took the season off because of it?
Just one. Not a normal course of action for athletes.
Every single guy in the NFL plays for money. This is a dumb topic. Money is the reason why we have a record amount of early entry players in this years draft. Saying Clowney took the season off is a joke. The media gave him sky high expectations that NO ONE could live up to. Add on the extra blocking thrown his way. I'll take him on my team any day.
No he wouldnt have stayed
His job in college was to play football. Why wouldn't he be about the money?

Bradley Roby from Ohio State sat out the Orange Bowl when it is believed that he could have played.
I didn't realize professional football players are only noble in their endeavors if they're playing for charity, and not to make money. When did this happen?

I think some fans have this heroic "for the love of the game" image of pro athletes. They are called
pro athletes for a reason. It's their job and they have a short shelf life. They try to make as much money as possible in the short amount of time they are able to play. And who can blame them? They are thrown out like a broken down racehorse as soon as they can no longer compete.
